In his 15th year, Smith has won seven regular-season league titles, five in the SEC and two in the Missouri Valley Conference. • In the SEC Tournament, he’s an amazing 23-6 (.793), having won five out of the last nine tournaments at Kentucky after guiding Georgia to the final game in 1997. • Smith has also captured seven SEC Eastern Division crowns in nine years, giving him more division titles than any league coach since the conference went to divisions in 1992. • Smith was named SEC Coach of the Year by both the Associated Press and the SEC coaches in 2002-03 and 2004-05. He has earned nine National Coach of the Year awards and captured all six that the NCAA officially recognizes, the first coach to achieve that since Bobby Knight (1975). • In his first UK season, the Cats won the NCAA title, the SEC regular-season championship, the league tournament title and the Eastern Division crown. He was named 1998 National Coach of the Year by Basketball Weekly and the Black Coaches Association and co-SEC Coach of the Year by the AP. Following the season, he was presented with the Winged Foot Award and the Victor Award for his success and was named Parent of the Year by Parent Magazine. • Previously, he had won Missouri Valley Conference titles and MVC Coach of the Year honors at Tulsa in 1994 and ‘95 after posting identical 15-3 records in league play. • Smith has coached eight of his last 12 teams to at least the Sweet 16 in the NCAAs - - five at UK, two at Tulsa and one at Georgia -- and recorded the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in UGA history. SWEET 16 TIMES THREE Eight coaches have taken three different teams to the Sweet 16. The only three active coaches to do so are Tubby Smith (Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky), Bill Self (Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas) and Rick Pitino (Providence, Kentucky and Louisville). Coaches since retired who have taken three teams to the Sweet 16 are Gene Bartow (Memphis, UCLA, UAB), Eddie Hickey (Creighton, St. Louis, Marquette), Frank McGuire (St. John’s, North Carolina, South Carolina), Ralph Miller (Wichita State, Iowa, Oregon State) and Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State). OVERTIME RECORD Tubby Smith is 9-5 in overtime games at Kentucky. Overall, he’s 17-8 in overtime games during his 14-year coaching career (2-1 at Georgia and 6-2 at Tulsa). TUBBY’S TROPHIES Since the SEC expanded to 12 teams in 1992, Tubby Smith has won more division titles (7) than any other coach. In 2004-05, Tubby Smith claimed his fifth overall SEC championship. The only coaches to win more than four league titles are Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp (27 titles) and Joe B. Hall (8). Smith is tied for second with Rick Pitino and Wimp Sanderson with five SEC Tournament titles, trailing only Rupp’s 13. MY THREE SONS All three of Tubby Smith’s sons have played basketball at an SEC school. Son G.G. played at Georgia (1996-99), Saul played at Kentucky (1998-2001) and youngest son Brian is currently a junior at Ole Miss.
TOPPING TWENTY Kentucky captured its 51st (and 16th-consecutive) 20-win season in 2005-06. Tubby Smith himself earned his 13th-consecutive 20-win season as a head coach, while as a team Kentucky extended its streak that dates back to the 1990-91 season. Smith’s personal streak of 13-straight 20-win seasons is the second-longest current streak in the nation, trailing only Arizona’s Lute Olson (19). Smith has coached the Wildcats to five SEC regular-season titles, five SEC Tournament Championships and seven Eastern Division crowns. THE TUBBY SMITH FOUNDATION In 1997, Tubby Smith started a foundation to assist underprivileged children. He has since conducted annual auctions, golf tournaments and other events while also accepting donations from companies and corporations throughout the Bluegrass. Now in its eighth year, the Foundation has raised over $2.8 million. In January 2003, the foundation teamed with Dell computers, along with several area businesses, to develop “Tubby’s Clubhouses.” The clubhouses hold 20 refurbished Dell computers at five different community centers in Lexington to serve at-risk middle school students through a 40- hour after school program.
