BLOCK PARTY<br />

With the added shot altering abilities <strong>of</strong> freshman<br />

Perry Stevenson and the new found rejection<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> Randolph Morris, <strong>Kentucky</strong> has recorded<br />

105 blocked shots this season. That’s in comparison<br />

to 106 all <strong>of</strong> last season and 92 in the 2005<br />

season when the team finished with the 13th<br />

most blocked shots in the program’s 104 year history.<br />

DANDY DECEMBER<br />

The Wildcats posted a 6-1 (.857) record in the<br />

month <strong>of</strong> December including wins over long<br />

time rivals Indiana and Louisville.<br />

The Wildcats outscored their opponents by an<br />

average <strong>of</strong> 8.9 (70.9-62.0) points per game and<br />

outrebounded their opponents 40.3-36.1.<br />

<strong>Kentucky</strong> has an all-time mark <strong>of</strong> 454-108<br />

(.808) in the month <strong>of</strong> December.<br />

So far, the Wildcats have posted a 5-1 mark in<br />

January.<br />

UK’s most successful month in terms <strong>of</strong> victories<br />

has been February where the Cats have posted<br />

MORRIS NAMED <strong>SEC</strong> PLAYER OF THE WEEK<br />

Junior center Randolph Morris was named the<br />

<strong>SEC</strong> Player <strong>of</strong> the Week on Jan. 1 after leading<br />

the Wildcats to a 78-65 win over Eastern<br />

<strong>Kentucky</strong>. He recorded his fourth double-double<br />

<strong>of</strong> the season and the sixth <strong>of</strong> his career.<br />

Morris' <strong>25</strong> points tied a career high for the 6-<br />

11 junior and recorded a 20 point-10 rebound<br />

game for the second time this season. He is the<br />

first Wildcat to have two 20-10 games in the<br />

same season since Tayshaun Prince in 2001-02.<br />

Morris has scored in double figures in every game<br />

but one this season.<br />

MEEKS NAMED <strong>SEC</strong> FROSH OF THE WEEK<br />

Freshman guard Jodie Meeks was named the<br />

<strong>SEC</strong> Freshman <strong>of</strong> the Week (12/18) based on his<br />

performance against Louisville (12/16).<br />

The 6-5 Norcross, Ga. native recorded a career<br />

and game high 18 points in helping lead the<br />

Wildcats to a 61-49 win over the Cardinals in<br />

Freedom Hall. Meeks nailed four three pointers,<br />

including a three-pointer at the 10:20 mark <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second half that put <strong>Kentucky</strong> on top to stay. He<br />

hit 4-<strong>of</strong>-5 from the free throw line including three<br />

in a row when he was fouled in the act <strong>of</strong> shooting<br />

a three-pointer. His three free throws extended<br />

the <strong>Kentucky</strong> lead to eight points with 6:36<br />

remaining.<br />

NAISMITH CANDIDATE<br />

Junior center Randolph Morris added<br />

‘Naismith candidate’ to his list <strong>of</strong> pre-season honors<br />

as he was listed on the Top 50 candidates for<br />

the 2007 Naismith award, the most prestigious<br />

national award presented annually to the men’s<br />

and women’s players <strong>of</strong> the year. The Top 50 list<br />

was compiled by the Atlanta Tip<strong>of</strong>f Club’s Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Selectors, comprised <strong>of</strong> leading basketball journalists,<br />

coaches and administrators from around<br />

the country. The board based its pre-season criteria<br />

on player performances from last season and<br />

expectations for the 2006-07 season.<br />

NAISMITH CANDIDATES SQUARE OFF<br />

It was a contest inside a contest when the<br />

Wildcats traveled to Chapel Hill to take on the<br />

North Carolina Tarheels. <strong>Kentucky</strong> Naismith<br />

candidate Randolph Morris vs. UNC Naismith<br />

candidate Tyler Hansbrough. When the dust settled,<br />

Morris got the better <strong>of</strong> the individual battle<br />

posting 23 points, seven rebounds and three<br />

assists to Hansbrough’s seven points and three<br />

rebounds.<br />

CATS IN THE RANKINGS<br />

<strong>Kentucky</strong> is ranked in the Coaches’ Top <strong>25</strong> for<br />

the first time in nine weeks. <strong>Kentucky</strong> is also<br />

receiving votes in the AP Top <strong>25</strong>. The Wildcats<br />

were picked in the top <strong>25</strong> <strong>of</strong> several other preseason<br />

publications. Blue Ribbon magazine has<br />

<strong>Kentucky</strong> as high as 17th, while Lindy’s tabbed<br />

UK has the 37th best team in the nation. Other<br />

organizations rank <strong>Kentucky</strong> 21st (The Sporting<br />

News and Dick Vitale), 22nd (CSTV.com and<br />

Street & Smith’s) and 27th (ESPN.com Summer<br />

Sizzling 50).<br />

CARTER UNDERGOES SHOULDER SURGERY<br />

Sophomore center Jared Carter underwent surgery<br />

on Friday, Dec. 22 to repair a dislocated<br />

right shoulder.<br />

Carter originally hurt his shoulder Nov. 11<br />

during practice. After sitting out UK’s first five<br />

games, he played in three contests before re-injuring<br />

the shoulder in practice Dec. 7.<br />

The surgery was performed by Dr. Scott Mair<br />

at the UK Chandler Hospital.<br />

Carter is expected to return to activity in six<br />

months. UK will seek a medical redshirt for the<br />

Georgetown, Ky. native.
