Mike valued <strong>the</strong> opportunities to spend time with our key stakeholders and <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to achieve a longstand<strong>in</strong>g objective to understand how <strong>survey</strong> data is<br />

collected and <strong>the</strong> controls that are required to reduce errors, and <strong>the</strong>n to see<br />

<strong>the</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>work</strong> done onboard before render<strong>in</strong>g to UKHO. In this it<br />

completed his witness<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> miss<strong>in</strong>g jigsaw piece for him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end-to-end<br />

process that delivers ‘The Work’ that is signed off at UKHO<br />

Mike said: “This was <strong>the</strong> first time I was able to see first hand how field<br />

<strong>survey</strong> <strong>work</strong> is achieved and <strong>the</strong> problems our <strong>survey</strong>ors face. It was a<br />

fantastic opportunity to see <strong>the</strong> excellent <strong>work</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g done <strong>in</strong> this difficult<br />

environment and to provide <strong>in</strong>put <strong>in</strong>to how <strong>the</strong> data ga<strong>the</strong>red will be used by<br />

UKHO. It also provided <strong>the</strong> ideal platform to have very mean<strong>in</strong>gful discussions<br />

about operations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area with our stakeholders.”<br />

For Ian, who previously commanded HMS ENDURANCE, <strong>the</strong> visit updated<br />

him on recent developments <strong>in</strong> region and to ga<strong>the</strong>r presentational material<br />

for a paper he is prepar<strong>in</strong>g to present to <strong>the</strong> Antarctic Treaty Convention later<br />
