ARCS Implementation Additional Notes for Licensed Developers Version 1.4 February 2000
SECTION 1
STAGES IN THE ARCS MANUFACTURER LICENSING
AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
1.1 Developer’s pack contents
You are now licensed to develop ARCS compatible systems. You should have been supplied with the
following items in this package:
ARCS Security - Manufacturer’s Specifications document;
Encrypted sample data in HCRF Version 2.00 on CD-ROM;
Promotional Pack including general ARCS brochures;
Company specific manufacturer development codes (MIDs);
Skipper Problem test pack (only OEMs developing for the Skipper service);
This document.
You should also have received a copy of your completed ARCS Manufacturer’s Licence Agreement for
your records.
1.2 Addition of your company’s details to UKHO promotional material
Once you are licensed, your company’s details can be added to the main UKHO chart catalogue (NP131)
and to the general ARCS brochures as an OEM developing ARCS compatibility. If you would like your
company’s details added to these please let BD(PA) know. Examples of the general ARCS brochures are
provided in the Promotional Pack and can be used as pro-formers for the data that we will require.
1.3 Initial development using encrypted sample data
Initial development work should involve the decryption and use of the test charts that are supplied on the
sample CD. The document ‘ARCS Security - Manufacturer’s Specifications’ defines how to decrypt
ARCS data and also details the licensing checks that are to be performed. Technical assistance on
decryption and system functionality can be provided by BD(PA). (See Annex A).
The sample CD contains only 4 charts. Please remain aware, during this initial stage, of the problems
associated with handling larger numbers of charts. It is easy to design a system that works well with 4
charts, but is very unwieldy with large numbers.
Associated documents that you will need to consult during development are:
HCRF Version 2.0 (NP 760) - the ARCS data format document;
ARCS Systems Developer Implementation Guide (ASDIG) which gives some guidance on system
functionality;
These notes ‘ARCS Implementation - Additional Notes for Licensed Developers’.
