Welcome! 

The WCML-N Scenario Pack #1 was created by members of the UKTrainSim community. Our aims 

were simple: 

 

 

Create a scenario pack that made good use of DLC and Freeware content to improve realism 

Strike a balance between using DLC for realism and making the pack available to as many 

people as possible

Why did we use DLC at all? 

Many people have spent money on items of rolling stock that they enjoy driving and we wanted to 

add realism to the scenario pack. Rather than just allow any DLC to be used by the scenario authors 

a restricted list of “approved” DLC was created to allow realism without preventing the majority 

from enjoying this pack. 

Do I need all the DLC? 

No! When you install this pack you will be warned if you do not have all the items of rolling stock 

that may have been used by the scenario authors. You may ignore the warning and still install the 

pack although of course you will only be able to use scenarios which you have the stock for. 

However, even If you have none of the DLC there are some scenarios in this pack which only use 

freeware rolling stock. There really is something for everyone to enjoy. The only item of DLC you 

need is the WCML-N route. 

How do I know what DLC / Rolling Stock is required for each scenario? 

In the scenario selection screen the description for each scenario details the stock required allowing 

you to check if you have what is needed for each scenario before you try to play them. 

What if I have the Just Trains Class 67 Pack? 

Just Trains have created a Class 67 as well as RSC. This pack uses the RSC Class 67 because the Mk3 

Sleepers that come with the RSC version are ideal for the WCML-N. Those scenarios where the 

player train is the RSC Class 67 have also got an identical Just Trains version. This allows you to play 

the scenario with either version of the 67. The class 67 used is clearly indicated in the scenario name 

and description. 

Do I have the latest pack installed? 

Every time you install any download which is part of the UKTS Freeware Pack project it will 

automatically check to see if a more up-to-date version is available and warn you if you are trying to 

install an obsolete pack. 

A small utility called “UKTrainSim Freeware Pack Updater” is also installed with every pack. This 

utility will allow you to check quickly and easily if updates for any of your packs are available. It also 

lists packs that you do not have with straightforward links to click and download them

Description: On 16th October 1997 drive a Virgin XC service from Carstairs Junction to Carlisle. The 

traffic for the main passenger trains is based on the real timetable. The additional 

freight trains are fictional. 

Briefing: It is 12:22 on the 16th October 1997. You are in charge of the 09:10 Aberdeen to 

Plymouth Virgin XC service. Your only stop is at Carlisle (due at 13:14) where you will 

hand over to another driver. Note that you are expected to stick to the posted speed 

limits for this class of train (i.e. do not use the higher EPS limits).

Description: It's a freezing cold Wednesday 14th January 1997. Drive the early morning service from 

Glasgow to Euston as far as Carlisle. All passenger services are from the 1997-8 

timetable. All ECS and freight workings are fictional. 

Briefing: It's a cold winter morning and you're in charge of the first London bound train of the 

day from Glasgow. On your shift the stops will be Motherwell (6:29) and Carlisle (7:40). 

Note that you are expected to remain within the Non-EPS speed limits. The run to 

Motherwell is quite tight for time, so you should make swift progress from Glasgow. 

The run from Motherwell to Carlisle should be nice and easy....

The weather is miserable - like it is on the Scotland/England border. There are a number 

of services on the line today. 

Briefing: 1E96 has just arrived into Gretna Green and you are required to take over the run to 

Carlisle where another driver will take over the run to Newcastle. Please open the doors 

at Gretna Green then proceed to Carlisle.

Description: Good morning driver. It is 10:00 on a Friday morning and you're in charge of the 1S39 

07:20 Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central, Virgin service for the last leg of the 

journey - Carlisle to Glasgow. Due to awful weather conditions from Birmingham earlier, 

the Virgin 'Super Voyager' which would've worked this service has been cancelled and a 

'Pendolino' has been booked instead from Crewe. Your Pendolino is currently standing 

in Platform 1, you have a clear non-stop run to Glasgow. It is raining but no other 

problems have been reported so far. Good luck. 

Briefing: Your task today is to drive Class 390 'Pendolino' no. 390002 from Carlisle to Glasgow 

Central on the 1S39 07:20 Birmingham to Glasgow Central express service. This train 

started from Crewe as a Class 390 due to bad weather conditions earlier. There are no 

reported problems so far but the weather isn't brilliant. Good luck.

1Z02 The MYSTEX by 1S811985 

Background Information 

MYSTEX was one of a number of acronyms used by BR to describe various special passenger train 

workings: ADEX was an advertised day excursion; FOOTEX and RUGEX were for sporting event 

related trains; MYSTEX was an advertised mystery day excursion, where the passengers would not 

know their destination until they arrived; CRANKEX was used, a little cruelly perhaps, to describe 

railway enthusiast specials. 

Such special workings were a common feature of the UK railway scene at the time, and were seen as 

a way to put spare capacity, both of staff and rolling stock, to profitable use. Also a feature of the 

railway at the time would be the regular use of additional and relief workings to augment capacity 

on scheduled services. It was usual practice for carriage depots to maintain two, three or more spare 

sets of coaching stock, mostly of MK1corridor variety, in anticipation of such workings. Alas, such 

spare capacity, and the ethos of public service that it facilitated, went out of fashion as the UK's 

railway went down the road toward privatisation. I think we're the poorer for it. 

The summer Saturday MYSTEX's that ran out of Glasgow Central in the early 1990’s were a god-send 

to a small band of young enthusiasts looking for a cheap way to get south of the border for a day’s 

trainspotting. Almost all of the trains headed down the WCML, the majority bound for various 

popular day trip destinations on the north Wales coast but some would venture to the likes of 

Shrewsbury and Coventry. Very occasionally an ECML destination such as York or Durham was 

involved and this rarity was chosen for the scenario in order to have the train diesel powered and to 

justify the stop at Carstairs on the premise of a locomotive change. 

Though not routine on the lines involved in the scenario it was not uncommon for some passenger 

trains to exceed the length of platforms in the UK during the period depicted. Standing instructions

were provided to the train and station staff within the BR rule books to cover situations when the 

train would be longer than the platform. These instructions could then be further expanded upon in 

special instructions issued for individual workings. In the case of train depicted in the scenario, 

station staff at Glasgow Central and Motherwell would likely be instructed to restrict access by 

passengers to the rear of the train, with the front portion intended for passengers boarding at 

Uddingston, Bellshill and Wishaw. The guard meanwhile would be under instruction to lock/unlock 

the doors on the relevant portions as required. On the return journey, staff at Durham would be 

under similar instruction. 

I doubt such practices would be permissible today and indeed, from a modern perspective, it might 

be asked if such operating practices endangered passengers? Well yes, potentially they did. As 

indeed would other features of the train depicted, such as passenger operated slam doors without 

any form of central locking under the control of the crew, or droplight and sliding windows that 

could be flung fully open. I guess that thirty years ago there was a different attitude toward risk, of 

all kinds, on the part of wider society. We may be safer today but I can’t help but think we've lost a 

little something along the way. 

The MYSTEX is an attempt on my part to recapture something of that lost age; when non-boilered 

freight loco's, filthy from their weeks work, would be coupled up to antiquated rakes of otherwise 

idle compartment stock and put to use providing the public with a cheap and cheerful day out while 

putting a few much needed pounds into BR's coffers. Great days, at least so long as you took your 

own sandwiches!

Briefing: Drive 6D62 from Carfin to the run-round at Polmadie. Watch your braking as it's 

downhill almost all the way. The maximum speed of your train is 55mph. Mind that the 

line speed on the approach to Polmadie drops from 75 to 30 to 10mph in rapid 

succession.

Description: Good morning driver. This morning you are in control of one of Eastfield's Class 37's on 

an oil working from Grangemouth Oil Refinery to Prestwick. You will be driving as far as 

Polmadie Goods Loop where another driver will take over. The train is diverted this 

morning, we are to travel via Motherwell and Hamilton as the more direct route is 

closed for engineering works. You are booked at Polmadie at 06:50, you have arrived 

here 15 minutes earlier than normal so it is possible that you may be on time by the 

time you reach Polmadie.

For driving the class 156 note that you should NOT use the mouse to control the driving controls. Set 

the reverser to forward, using the W key. Then the AWS test will run. The reverser will be placed in 

backward position. You need to clear the AWS with the Q-key. 

Then you can depart, pressing the W-key twice and using the A and D key for the throttle. 

On the branch line you may need to use the TAB key to as the dispatcher permission to proceed.

Description: It is a freezing cold morning, just before dawn, in December 1982 and it is snowing 

heavily. A Class 86 on a Glasgow to Euston express has failed just north of Carstairs, 

blocking the Up main line, and the passengers are getting cold and irritated. A relief 

Class 47 has been found and coupled to the front of the failed train. You need to drive 

the train to Carlisle before uncoupling the failed loco and towing it to Kingmoor TMD for 

repairs. 

Briefing: Drive to Carlisle, stopping at Carstairs and Lockerbie. Uncouple the coaches at Carlisle 

station before pulling forward to clear the train and backing the failed Class 86 to 

Kingmoor TMD for repairs. Try and make up lost time, but some other trains have been 

released onto the main line ahead of you to reduce the backlog, so you may get some 

signal checks along the way.

formations. Note: You start after the signal and slightly rolling due to a Railworks 

bug. 

Briefing: You have three stops today. Carstairs, Lockerbie and Carlisle. You have permission to 

run at 140MPH on certain sections only. You will be informed when you are allowed to 

do so.

Loopy Lanark by AndyM77 


Set in the early 2000s, the brand new Pendolino order is taking over from the old Class 86 / 87 

hauled stock. It's a summer’s evening and you're in charge of a 2000 ScotRail liveried Class 156 

DMU. 

You're taking your 156 from Lanark on a round trip back to Lanark. You'll be stopping at Lanark, 

Carluke, Wishaw, Holytown, Motherwell, Shieldmuir, Carluke and Lanark. The scenario starts at 

21:05, and you don't need to worry about picking up passengers until 21:05:34 so plenty of time to 

set your lights up on the unit, check the radio, brakes and turn the instrument lights on, etc.. 

The evening freight traffic is slowly starting to pick up at this time of night but is not likely to have a 

major impact on your timekeeping. 

Known bugs / issues: 

If you exceed the maximum 75MPH limit for the class 156 unit and happen to go over a sharp bump 

/ tight radius bend too fast you're very likely to induce the “Jelly Cab” issue with a subsequent loss of 

controls as the wobble becomes more pronounced. 

This has only been experienced whilst driving like a lunatic (i.e well over the speed limit), and 

therefore you need to drive this as a 'real' driver, keeping an eye on the unit’s speed at all times. By 

doing so I have not come across the “Jelly Cab” whilst testing the scenario.

If it does happen then exit Railworks (TS2012) entirely and then restart the program and scenario. 

Hopefully this “Jelly Cab” will get rectified sometime in the future...

Description: This'll drive you "Loopy"... Take your 156 on a dry summer's evening for a round trip to 

Lanark from Lanark. Some freight trains are about, but they shouldn't interfere too 

much. 

Briefing: Call at Lanark (A: 21:05:34 - D: 21:07), Carluke (21:18), Wishaw (21:24), Holytown 

(21:30), Motherwell (21:37), Sheildmuir (21:40), Carluke (21:48) and finally Lanark again 

at (22:02). Weather and track conditions are excellent and no reported problems.

are due in Glasgow at 09:53.

Description: A newly restored Black 5 is hauling an enthusiasts' railtour from Leeds to Edinburgh via 

the Settle and Carlisle line. It has made it as far as Carlisle and you now need to drive it 

north over Beattock to Carstairs Junction and on towards Edinburgh. 

Briefing: Drive the Black 5 north from Carlisle, stopping at Lockerbie for a photocall. You then 

have the long hard climb up Beattock to the summit before continuing to Carstairs 

Junction and on towards Edinburgh. You have a heavy train but put up a spirited 

performance and try not to disappoint the steam enthusiasts on board! As an added 

complication, not all the water expected at Carlisle was available so you are leaving with 

only a partially full tender. With care, it should get you to Edinburgh though!

Polmadie, take it to Glasgow Central along a slightly different route than usual, in order 

to make it face the right direction.
