Goal Setting
FOR SMART TEENS
A Practical Guide

Preface
Do you ever feel that you have spent the entire day busy and
running and you have not really achieved much and then there
is always someone - brother, sister, roommate or classmate -
who is achieving something great every time you turn around.
Now why is that?
You may have not thought about but if you think about it,
your answer is related to GOAL-SETTING. You may work hard
and keep busy, but if you do not set goals, then the bad news
could be that you will find yourself working hard without any
meaningful results.
Do you remember about an incident in the story of
Alice in Wonderland: at one point Alice asks which
road she should take. The Cheshire Cat asks where she would
like to go, to which Alice replies, “I don’t much care where.”
The Cat’s response? “Then it
doesn’t matter which way
you go.” Alice ends up
wandering aimlessly as a result.
Without goals, we are like
Alice – wandering aimlessly
throughout life. Setting goals
gives us direction, purpose
and focus in our lives. How you
go about setting your goals can be
the most important thing determining
whether or not you achieve them.
So, here we go and find it out!.

Chapter 1
Rebecca's Dilemma

Once there lived a Peterson family in a beautiful white
colored bungalow in the outskirts of Okhlahoma city.
It was a beautiful bungalow with a little pond near it.
The pond had crystal clear green water and small fishes in
the water would add its beauty. The lotus flowers in that
pond were a feather on its cap. But this was just not it; the
surrounding of their bungalow was very scenic with a long
stretched belt of Gulmohar tress. Red Gulmohar flowers
would fence the beautiful white house and would soak the
impurity with its essence.
Most of the people passing-by would definitely stop and
admire the white beauty for a while before igniting the
engine of their car. Even the pedestrians would keep
looking at its beauty while walking. Peterson’s who owned
this bungalow were very proud of it.
Mr. and Mrs. Peterson were very renowned doctors.
They were considered as one of the best doctors of that
area. Mr. Peterson was a surgeon while Mrs. Peterson
was a cardiologist. They had 2 children. Rebecca was
10 year old and Mike was 6 year old. Rebecca was tall,
smart, intelligent and very tomboyish. She was very
presentable and very sensible. Not only this, she was
very good in academics as well. Her teachers were very
fond of her. She was the best in her class and most of the
children in her class would silently compete with her.
But her competition was with herself. She would set a
standard for herself and would work hard to achieve it.
Mike was just like any 6 year old boy. He had his own
world but he was very much inspired by her elder
sister’s victories. She was a role model for him.
But the only problem with Rebecca was that she would
behave quite lazily in the beginning. It was quite impossible
to move her to get something doing. Right from the
morning alarm, her alarm would keep snoozing after
5 minutes but she would not step out of the bed unless her
mother would come and yell on her. After that, it would be
a rush hour for her. She would at times skip breakfast in
order to catch her school bus. But when in school,
she was very active and sincere student.
She would take active participation in all class activities
and was also the class monitor. Surprisingly, she was not
lazy at all in school but again once
she was home after her school, she
would keep postponing her all
routine tasks. At times she would
not go out in the evening to play
and would keep watching T.V.
for long hours without taking
any interest in completing her
homework or studies.
She would only do it after mother
reminded her about her tasks twice
or thrice. Well, this was her
daily routine.
Like any mother, Mrs. Peterson was also worried about
Rebecca. She was 10 year old and it was high time for
her to become disciplined and independent in life. Mike
was still young to understand his daily routine tasks but
unlike Rebecca, he was quite disciplined.
He would get up on time, complete bathroom activities
on time and on his own, would sit with his mother to
complete his homework all by himself at night and
he knew that 5.00 p.m. was his time to go out and
play. He never missed his play time. But yes, it was
tough to get him home from the playground.
He could play outside the whole night
if allowed.
One day, Mrs. and Mr. Peterson had to go out of the
Okhlahoma city for some work. Mrs. Peterson had
called her younger sister, Nicole who was a medical
student, to come and stay with Rebecca and
Mike for a few days.
Mrs. Peterson gave her children’s daily routine
on a paper to her sister before leaving.
Her sister assured Mrs. Peterson not to
worry at all about the kids.
