Haskell Wexler, ASC is a three-time Oscar winner for Who’s
Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Bound For Glory, and for the documentary
Interview With My Lai Veterans.
He also has Oscar nominations for Blaze, One Flew Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest, and Matewan, and in 2001 was nominated for an
Emmy for his work on the HBO film 61*. In all, Wexler has over 40
feature credits, and he has also shot a long list of documentaries,
plus several IMAX films, and hundreds of commercials. In 1993,
Wexler received the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.
Wexler was born and raised in Chicago. He came west to
attend the University of California at Berkeley. After a year, he
volunteered to become an ordinary seaman in the merchant marine
at the start of World War II. He survived several torpedo
attacks and one sinking. After the war, his father helped him open
a film studio in a suburb of Chicago. It was short-lived experience.
Mainly, he shot industrial films for his father’s business acquaintances.
In 1947, Wexler joined the International Cinematographers
Guild in Chicago as an assistant cameraman. He did some pickup
work with Hollywood crews, but mainly Wexler shot documentaries
for Encyclopedia Britannica. Later in the ‘50s, Wexler spent
much of his time filming commercials for Kling Studios, which became
Fred Niles Studios.
By the late 1950s he was determined to try his hand at narrative
filmmaking. His first feature was Stakeout on Dope Street,
a co-venture with Roger Corman. In 1959, Wexler attracted
attention to his work with the stark, black-and-white film The
Savage Eye, a brutally honest and provocative visualization of Los
Angeles.
He went on to shoot The Hoodlum Priest, A Face in the Rain
and America, America. The latter was his ticket to Hollywood, and
Wexler got work as an assistant cameraman on several television
series, including Ozzie and Harriet.
His first mainstream feature was The Best Man, followed
by The Loved One. That led to Virginia Woolf. Wexler followed up
quickly with such films as In the Heat of the Night and The Thomas
Crown Affair. In 1968 Wexler wrote, directed, produced, and photographed
Medium Cool. His feature credits also include Other
People’s Money, The Babe, The Secret of Roan Inish, and Muholland
Falls.
Today, Wexler still doesn’t skip a beat, working on narratives
and documentaries, including operating the camera when
the Society of Camera Operators volunteered to document the
journey of the Space Shuttle Endeavour to its final home at the
California Science Center.
Optics Limited and Mr. Les Zellan, in recognition of
THe significant contributions Cooke has made to
advancing the art and craft of film making.
Timeline of Cooke Cine Lens History
The recent surge of interest in Cooke Series II and III and
other classic lenses suggested the time was right for this article
by Barbara Lowry.
There is a short list of prolific Cooke optical designers who
were responsible for major innovations that helped define the
look of motion pictures for the past 118 years.
William and Thomas Smithies Taylor were mechanical and
optical geniues. They opened their first workshop while still in
school. In 1885, they moved to Slate Street in Leicester, England
to set up a business as “Manufacturers of Optical Instruments.” In
1887,William Hobson joined them as sales manager. The firm was
named Taylor, Taylor & Hobson. They built the first Cooke lens in
1894, after T. Cooke & Sons of York (makers of telescopes, but not
interested in photography) offered Taylor, Taylor & Hobson the
manufacturing rights to a Triplett photographic lens that solved
the problem of edge softness. The 3-section lens was designed
by Dennis Taylor (not a relative). William Taylor invented, among
other things, the standardized screw thread for photographic
lenses (1892), the dimpled golf ball (1905), engraving machines,
and many devices for making lenses at tolerances that can still
compete with contemporary equipment. William Taylor hired
optical designer Arthur Warmisham 1912.
Warmisham filed 70 optical patents, from 1922 through the
late 1930s—more than any other person or company. His designs
included the Cooke Varo, a 1931 zoom lens for cinematography.
Warmisham hired Horace W. Lee as an optical designer
shortly after—in 1913. Rudolf Kingslake, head of the Optical
Design Department of Eastman Kodak in 1937, among other
distinctions, said, “Horace Lee was one of England’s foremost
and most original lens designers.” Lee was responsible for the
first f/2.0 lens, the subsequent Cooke Speed Panchro design, and
the telecentric (reverse telephoto) lens design for use on 3-strip
Technicolor cameras.
In 1948, Warmisham hired Gordon Cook, who was
responsible for many Cooke zoom lenses. His 1971 Cooke Varotal
20-100mm was innovative and breathtaking: it did not breathe at
all. This was a first. The Varotal was also the first zoom lens for
35mm cinematography with a sealed and fixed front element. It
had excellent performance and was easy to service—innovations
incorporated in all Cooke zooms ever since. In 1988, the Academy
honored him with the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for his lifetime
contributions to the motion picture industry, the first time this
award went to someone outside the United States.
In 1998, Les Zellan, then U.S. distributor of Cooke lenses,
bought the Cooke lens division of Taylor-Hobson. The existing
factory where Cooke lenses had been made was so run down that
seagull feathers would float down through holes in the roof. Les
built a new 21,000 sq. ft. factory about 4 miles away, and moved
all the equipment, machines, and existing personnel, including
Mark Craig Gerchman, who became chief optical designer. The
Cooke brand continued under a new company name: Cooke
Optics Limited.
Les Zellan is chairman of Cooke Optics Limited, maker of
Cooke lenses, the legendary lens brand that captured virtually all
films shot in Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century.
Zellan is a 1973 graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University with a
master’s degree in Technical Theatre.
After graduation, Zellan sold, designed and installed
theatrical stage lighting systems for Berkey Colortran and then
became sales director at a film equipment rental company in New
York City. That association led him to an emerging product, the
Aaton 16mm camera, and Zellan’s company, Zellan Enterprises
Ltd., was formed in New York City in 1979 to promote and sell
the product for Aaton in the U.S. as exclusive importer and
distributor. He added Cooke lenses as well as Canon and OpTex
to his distributorship shortly thereafter.
In 1998, Zellan purchased the Cooke lens division from
Taylor-Hobson of Leicester, England, naming the new company,
Cooke Optics Limited, and moved it to a new facility. A year later,
his new design team won 1999 Science and Technical Academy
Awards, 1999 Primetime Emmy Awards and a CINEC award
(Munich, Germany) for the optical and mechanical design of the
company’s new Cooke S4 Prime lenses for 35mm/Super35mm
cinematography.
On February 9, 2013, Zellan accepted a Science and
Technology Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statue) on behalf
of Cooke Optics Limited “for continuing innovation in the design,
development and manufacture of advanced camera lenses that
have helped define the look of motion pictures over the last
century.”
He is an associate member of the American Society of
Cinematographers and lectures at colleges on the art of lens
manufacture. John Fauer will present the Award to Cooke Optics
Limited and Mr. Les Zellan.
FotoKem Celebrates 50 Years of Progression in the World
of Post Production
For five decades, FotoKem has been on the forefront of post
production. Their work embodies technological leadership and a
passion for supporting filmmakers’ work. From early on, FotoKem
has been a trusted facility for studio projects, television shows,
independent films, and commercial production. Today, filmmakers
continue to rely on the facility’s wide range of expertise for
navigating the many formats and choices for storytelling.
Founded by Gerald Brodersen in 1963, the company’s executive
team includes William and Michael Brodersen (President/
CEO and Chief Strategy Officer, respectively), along with several
other family members specializing in different aspects of the business.
“We are very proud of our history in the post-production
industry,” notes William Brodersen. “Our transition into a third
generation is absolutely attributed to the talented people that
work here. With the leadership of individuals like Bob Semmer,
our COO, we have been able to build an incredible team of professionals
that has made Fotokem what it is today.”
FotoKem began as a 16mm black-and-white laboratory.
Over the years as technologies have advanced, FotoKem has
grown with an eye on the future. They recently established an inhouse
software development team that has at least half a dozen
significant software products, such as their award-winning next-
LAB system. These tools provide a backbone for large and small
scale productions, and uniquely position FotoKem to respond
quickly with custom development.
FotoKem could be categorized as an anomaly in Hollywood.
Headquartered in Burbank, it is one of only a few independently
owned and operated post facilities with a global reach. FotoKem
has expanded over the years with the acquisition of SPY, Keep
Me Posted, Margarita Mix, L.A. Studios and Dakota Digital, each
specializing in unique services. The company also has fiber-connected
offices in New York, Atlanta and New Orleans.
FotoKem remains focused on putting the best solutions in
place for the entertainment community. Whether developing filebased
workflows for emerging camera technologies, designing
70mm film pipelines, managing content, restoring classics, finishing
color, or providing non-linear production services, FotoKem
never loses sight of its customers.
Michael Brodersen notes, “Today, there is a lot of prediction
involved. We listen closely to our customers and respond
thoughtfully. We frequently invent solutions and turn on a dime
– a necessity in today’s dynamic world. There is tremendous innovation
here, and we’re focused on being part of this industry
for another 50 years.”
Fujifilm Introduces the
New IS-mini
www.fujifilm.com
From the color science experts at Fujifilm comes the
new IS-mini, a small color management device that
converts incoming HD-SDI moving images via two
sets of 1D and 3D LUTs, to outputs of both HD-SDI
and HDMI connections. By use of a dedicated standalone
software application (for both MacOS and Windows),
the IS-mini creates monitor calibrations for almost
any kind of production monitor in just a few short
minutes. Creative LUTS can then be concatenated
together with the profile for truly accurate previews.
The IS-mini is an extension of the technologies first
introduced through the CCBOXX (Image Processing
System IS-100), and is also able to work with the
CCBOXX by extending the abilities of remote color
adjustment of live digital images during movie and
television productions. Through the built-in Ethernet
connection, multiple IS-minis can be assembled into
a powerful array for multi-monitor/multi-camera image
control and very precise color matching.
Dolly System
www.InnovisionOptics.com
The Polly portable dolly system is an ultra-compact
and flexible solution for smooth tracking shots, and
is now available for sale or rent from Innovision Optics.
A flywheel gear on the Polly–made of high-grade
The Spectacular Now
Indie breakouts are hitting theater screens this summer en
masse, and that can only mean one thing for movie-going audiences:
an exceptional selection of entertaining stories from which
to choose.
Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner
Fruitvale Station hits movie screens in July, compliments of The
Weinstein Bros. Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker
Ryan Coogler and based on true events, Fruitvale Station
tells the story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on the final day of 2008
and his untimely death New Year’s Day at the hands of a Bay Area
Rapid Transit (BART) police officer.
From the beginning, cinematographer Rachel Morrison and
Coogler were determined to shoot Fruitvale Station on film, ultimately
choosing Kodak Super 16mm. “There is something very
tangible and organic about Super 16 for Ryan and me,” Morrison
says. “It gives a very real feeling out of the gate, and that was
what we wanted—to embed people in the world, a documentary
approach with more cinematic lighting where it feels like we are
along for the ride.”
Woody Allen brings us a more dramatic story with Blue
Jasmine, which also reunites him with his Vicky Cristina Barcelona
cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, AEC, ASC. “From my
point of view, the universe of Woody Allen possesses a very definite
visual aesthetic that includes not only the photography but
also the wardrobe, the production design, and the color palette,”
Aguirresarobe explains. “My goal was to comply with this aesthetic
universe—the one he wishes for his movies—and also to
help him mold his language in the making of shots and sequences.”
The filmmakers agreed that film was the right choice, and the
entire movie was shot on KODAK VISION3 500T Color Negative
Film 5219. “It’s the texture of the film, but it’s also the texture of
the light that is projected on the screen,” Aguirresarobe adds. Blue
Jasmine also rolls out in July.
In The Spectacular Now, a high school senior who lives only
for the present meets a different kind of girl. It’s a tender tale
of finding one’s identity. When cinematographer Jess Hall, BSC
joined the production, director James Ponsoldt was already
scouting locations in his hometown of Athens, Georgia, a setting
that would play a key role and flavor every subsequent decision.
One of the first things he said to Hall: “This is a 35mm anamorphic
film. That’s how I want to shoot it, and that’s what I told the producers.
I feel very passionately about this.”
Ponsoldt chose the widescreen format despite working with
a trim $2.5 million budget. Hall was very involved in choreographing
and blocking the shots. He says the widescreen aspect ratio
with Kodak 35mm stocks worked well with two-shots, and wider
shots that evolve into two-shots. He also helped to make the format
work within the budget by drawing up a lean equipment list,
and creating efficiencies on set.
This summer will also see the release of anticipated indies
such as Passion; Ain’t Them Bodies Saints; Austenland; Closed Circuit;
and Lovelace; among others.
ino Flo’s new Celeb ® 200 DMX delivers the inspired
Experiences
CINE GEAR EXPO
NEWS 2013
The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will once again present a panel of master
cinematographers discussing their experiences on a variety of projects at Cine Gear Expo. The
seminar is designed to inspire the next generation of filmmakers, and educate the industry on the
role of the cinematographer.
The June 1 panel at 1 p.m. in the Paramount Theater will delve into the artistic nature of
cinematography, using real-world examples to demonstrate the process of creating a visual style
for projects based on each member’s experiences.
Based on availability, the panel will feature: Stephen H. Burum, ASC; Dean Cundey, ASC, Dion
Beebe, ASC, ACS; Daniel Pearl, ASC; Michael Goi, ASC; Karl Walter Lindenlaub, ASC; Don Burgess,
ASC; Paul Cameron, ASC; Russell P. Carpenter, ASC; Claudio Miranda, ASC; John Toll, ASC; Robert
Elswit, ASC;
Robert Richardson, ASC; Roberto Schaefer, ASC and Nancy Schreiber, ASC.
The dialogue is structured so that questions from the audience drive the conversations, and
will be moderated by George Spiro Dibie, ASC, chairman of the ASC Education and Public Outreach
Committee.
“The role of the cinematographer as artist of the image is more important than ever in today’s
multi-platform world,” says Dibie. “The ASC is dedicated to supporting filmmakers interested in
pursuing careers in cinematography, sharing our knowledge and collaborating with all departments
in the creation of moving images. This panel will address the many facets a cinematographer may
encounter on the set and in the suite, from pre-production through post.”
Dibie notes that ASC members frequently speak at colleges and universities around the world,
as well as at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood, where many film school students join members for
intimate dialogues regarding movie-making.
“We open our doors to anyone studying screenwriting, directing, production, design, acting,
and to all students, etc. because it takes a collective effort to succeed in the process of telling a story
for the screening with compelling visuals,” Dibie adds.
Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. was established in 1934 with the
aim of being the first Japanese producer of photographic films.
Over the following 10 years, the company produced photographic
films, motion-picture films and X-ray films. In the 1940s, Fuji
Photo entered the optical glasses, lenses and equipment markets
and in the mid-1950s, Fuji Photo accelerated the establishment
of overseas sales bases.
From the late 1960’s to mid-1980’s Fujifilm Motion Picture
was handled through independent consulting services from Eli
Drexler & Co., who hired Hollywood Film Company’s Mr. Harry
Teitelbaum to sell Motion Picture Negative film in Hollywood and
Reversal film sold to TV news and sporting events. At that time,
Fujifilm captured 90% of Primetime TV. Fujifilm was the first
to introduce HIGH speed negative film in 1980 for which they
received their first Academy Award. Fuji Photo then expanded its
production, stepping up the pace of its business globalization and
in 1988; Fujifilm USA, Inc. formed their Motion Picture Division
headed by Mr. Hap Parker.
Through the years, Fujifilm has mainly provided negative
films for shooting and positive films for projection in the motion
picture film business operations. Features, television series,
commercials, music videos, documentaries embraced Fujifilm’s
technological advancements and outstanding products. The
Motion Picture Division’s superior customer service was led by
North American Operations Manager, Sandra Kurotobi.
For years, the entire staff in Hollywood listened, encouraged
and supported filmmakers of all ages in achieving their dreams of
shooting a project on beautiful motion picture film.
In 2012, Fujifilm announced that in order to adapt to the
recent rapid transition of digitalization in the shooting, producing,
projecting and archiving processes of motion pictures Fujifilm
decided to shift its business operations to provide products
and services designed for digital workflow of motion picture
production and projection. Fujifilm stopped production of the
majority of Motion Picture Film products in March, 2013.
Fujifilm will continue to provide films suitable for long-term
archiving, high-performance lens for motion pictures, and other
products and services designed for digital workflow of motion
picture production and exhibition. Fujifilm will strive harder
than ever to provide such products and services in its continuous
contribution to the motion picture industry.
Cine Gear Expo thanks Fujifilm for their commitment,
loyalty and long history of manufacturing excellent products for
the Motion Picture Industry and their 18 years of support to Cine
Gear Expo since inception in 1996.
DIT are each designed for a specific set assignment.
Various tools can be called up from each mode. The 7”
HD professional monitor has an extra-slim profile with
a total volume that is 30% smaller than other 7” monitors.
Its weight of 1.5 lbs is ideal for new, light digital
cameras. With a viewing angle of 160-degrees vertical
and horizontal, its visibility in full sun is unrivaled. Yet, it
draws only 12w. On a dark set, its dimmable backlight
keeps it unnoticed. It accepts all HD formats, composite
and HDMI with an HDMI to SDI up-converter. Since
1985, Transvideo has pioneered flat panel technology,
designing high-end equipment for film, digital cinema,
broadcast, and 3D stereography.
Visual Systems and Sharp
Bring Innovative LCD
Monitors to Market
www.visusys.com
Visual Systems, in partnership with Sharp Imaging and Information
Company of America, presents a new 32” class professional
LCD monitor series featuring Sharp’s ground-breaking
3840x2160 pixel resolution IGZO technology. The IGZO
professional display series from Sharp delivers ultra-high
resolution at four times the pixel resolution of full 1080p high
definition. Featuring much smaller thin-film transistors (TFTs)
as compared to conventional displays, IGZO technology also
significantly increases the amount of light transmitted per
pixel. As a result, these advanced displays portray vibrant and
crisp content with the ability to zoom in to examine the detail
of a picture or text, or pan out to view content from a wider
angle. This can help boost operational efficiency and reduce
eyestrain by sparing users the need to scroll frequently. These
state-of-the-art monitors are the industry’s thinnest design in
their class. The series consists of two 32” class displays that
are differentiated by touch capability.
Motion Picture Film
Keeps on Rolling
Today’s landscape for movie and
television production and postproduction
is very different than it
was even just a few years ago. Many
in the creative community have expressed
loud and clear that they
want to have choices for telling
stories. Cine Gear Daily sat down
with Kodak’s Entertainment Imaging
President Andrew Evenski to find
out more about what the future
holds for motion picture film.
What is the status of the motion picture film business today?
Obviously we have seen some dramatic changes over the last
five years, but we’re seeing some stabilization of that now. Not
every story is meant to be told the same way, and motion picture
film offers qualities that digital doesn’t, and vice versa for that
matter. At Kodak, we remain committed to giving artists options
when deciding how best to illustrate their stories.
Kodak continues to manufacture and sell a wide range of motion
picture film products, making operational adjustments over the
past year to build a sustainable model for the future. I can also
assure you that Entertainment Imaging (the motion picture film
business unit of Kodak) is part of the company’s current business
Emergence Plan, and it continues to be the largest driver of film
manufacturing volume for Kodak into the future. We are manufacturing
and supply billions of feet of film, and we’ll continue to
do so as long as there is customer demand.
Can you address the recent closures of some labs, and how
that affects your customers, and the film business? The lab infrastructure
is evolving. However, there are still many labs in all
regions of the world processing and supporting motion picture
film. If you to go to our Web site and look through our lab directory,
you will see there are still many facilities for filmmakers to
choose from. As smaller labs emerge to the forefront and others
consolidate, Kodak’s team of experts is on the scene providing
support. Kodak has always supported our lab partners around
the globe. And now, probably more than ever, we all are working
together to maintain film as a creative choice for filmmakers
Who is using film? First and foremost, we make film for filmmakers.
Action adventure films including The Hunger Games
franchise and Sci-Fi thrillers like Robopocalypse are shooting
film. Stories like Star Trek: Into the Darkness and Man of Steel
with heavy visual effects were shot on Kodak. Indies shot on
film have enjoyed great success recently including Silver Linings
Playbook, and the last two winners of Sundance: Beasts of the
Southern Wild and Fruitvale Station. The filmmakers of gritty
dramas such as Two Guns, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, and AMC’s
Breaking Bad get the texture and grain they need from film.
Comedies such as The Hangover franchise, and epics such as
Noah are being told on film. Ultimately, telling a story and creating
a look that defines the emotions of that story remains the
essence of the format choice for filmmakers.
What’s next? Nobody has a crystal ball – five years ago there
were no iPads, and Alexa was a popular name for baby girls –
but everything we do is an effort to create sustainable models
for Kodak’s traditional portfolios. We are aware that there are
more choices than ever today, but if filmmakers want to create
images on film, it seems there are many dedicated companies to
support it.
Precise Color Management Through On-Set Communication, produced in association with
the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600.
The wide-ranging visual capabilities of today’s digital cameras, monitors and
postproduction equipment demand that the camera team develop a strong
communication system to capture the creative intent of the director and director of
photography. Two DP and DIT teams from recent high profile projects discuss how they
worked with the director and other members of the camera crew to manage the color
and look of the picture. Specific topics to be addressed include: the process of deciding
how to use technology to create the look; evaluating footage on the set and applying
color correction; preparing and evaluating dailies; and communicating decisions into
visual effects and postproduction.
“Color Management Done Simply, Color Management Done Right”
“Hey, does this look right to you?” We’re all tired of hearing that. This seminar will help you wrestle your color problems into submission.
We’ll talk about best practices on set, and we’ll talk about how to make final color easier. And we’ll introduce you to Fujifilm’s hit new
product, the ISmini, a revolutionary device that makes it easy to color match any number of monitors, HDSDI or HDMI, regardless of type
or manufacturer. Add a 3D LUT on top of that, and you can color manage the entire image chain from the camera. Or connect the ISmini to
Fujifilm’s full-blown look creation system, the IS-100 CCBOXX, and control the color for up to 100 cameras at once. Also, learn the essentials
of the new ACES color workflow from experts. Special guest: re-known cinematographer Dean Cundey, ASC will discuss his shoot of the
feature “Something Whispered” and how he handled looks during production and post.
IATSE Local 728 Panel – The Art and Politics of Gaffing
Local 728 will present a panel on the artistic aspect of set lighting, as seen through the prism of the gaffer/
cinematographer relationship. What gaffers, or chief lighting technicians (CLTs), do is about more than the technical
specifications of lighting fixtures. The best gaffers have a creative spirit and an artist’s eye. We will focus on the creative
process, and how they navigate the challenges of working with both the DP and production to achieve the DP’s vision
without losing their own creative voice. Gaffers straddle the line of artists and technicians –”painting with light.” We
would explore the philosophies employed by various gaffers as they practice their craft; covering topics ranging from how
a gaffer interfaces with a DP, and the autonomy they take in their lighting decisions, and how they execute those decisions
on the logistical side.” Moderator: David Kane / Panelists: Ian Kincaid (Django Unchained, Hugo) / Mike Bauman (Hunger
