Wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>Tuition</strong> Remission?<br />

• An employee benefit th<strong>at</strong> pays full tuition for <strong>Butler</strong><br />

full time employees who have worked <strong>at</strong> least 9<br />

months.*<br />

• Limited to 6 credit hours for employees, with<br />

agreement from supervisor.


• Can be used for full time enrollment for<br />

spouse or unmarried dependents under 25<br />

years of age pursuing their first post<br />

secondary degree.<br />

• Employee and Spouse can earn Gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Degree.


How do I access <strong>Tuition</strong> Remission?<br />

• Employees apply each semester with HR.<br />

• File your FAFSA by March 1.(full time students)<br />

• Take the approved applic<strong>at</strong>ion, study list and<br />

service fee of $25 to Student Accounts.<br />

• Can be used for summer terms as well.


Financial Aid and <strong>Tuition</strong><br />

Remission<br />

• Financial aid will assess the FAFSA for any other<br />

aid eligibility and provide an award notific<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

• <strong>Tuition</strong> Remission will be adjusted by any other<br />

tuition restricted awards.


Wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>Tuition</strong> <strong>Exchange</strong>?<br />

• TE is a partnership of over 600 colleges and<br />

universities offering competitive tuition<br />

exchange scholarships to dependents of<br />

faculty/staff employed <strong>at</strong> member institutions.<br />

• Approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 6000 students particip<strong>at</strong>e<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ionally in the TE program annually <strong>at</strong> the<br />

undergradu<strong>at</strong>e level.


Who is eligible to particip<strong>at</strong>e?<br />

• Dependents of faculty and staff who have<br />

been employed full-time for <strong>at</strong> least 9 months<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

• Dependents must meet admission<br />

requirements to the colleges they are<br />

choosing.


Is a Scholarship Guaranteed?<br />

• No – TE scholarships are not fringe benefits,<br />

they are competitive awards.<br />

• Institutions must maintain a balance between<br />

import and export students, and may, therefore<br />

only accept a certain number of highly qualified<br />

students each year.


How Competitive is the Admission<br />

Process?<br />

• TE Scholarships are generally very competitive.<br />

• In addition to meeting the admissions requirements<br />

of the receiving institution, some member<br />

institutions have established additional<br />

requirements such as a lottery system, higher<br />

entrance standards or a rolling acceptance policy.


How To Apply<br />

• Approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 1 year before your child plans to<br />

enroll in college, contact HR to confirm your<br />

eligibility and complete initial applic<strong>at</strong>ion for<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

• <strong>Butler</strong>’s liaison officer, in the Financial Aid Office,<br />

will submit the <strong>Tuition</strong> <strong>Exchange</strong><br />

Applic<strong>at</strong>ion/Certific<strong>at</strong>ion form to the liaison officer<br />

<strong>at</strong> the institutions to which you decide to apply.<br />

• Can submit up to 5 applic<strong>at</strong>ions per student.


• The liaison officer <strong>at</strong> the host school will<br />

notify the family when the applic<strong>at</strong>ion is<br />

accepted or rejected. Generally, you will find<br />

out before <strong>Butler</strong> does.<br />

• If you receive an award offer, the notific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

should contain the scholarship value as well<br />

as cost of <strong>at</strong>tendance for the institution.


Wh<strong>at</strong> does the Scholarship Cover?<br />

• Most scholarships will cover full tuition. However, some<br />

schools do cap their awards <strong>at</strong> the $31,500 amount set by<br />

<strong>Tuition</strong> <strong>Exchange</strong>.<br />

• Most scholarships are offered for a total of 4 years or 8<br />

semesters, though schools may offer less than 4 year<br />

awards.<br />

• Be sure to know exactly wh<strong>at</strong> your scholarship covers<br />

before accepting it.


• You will need to notify <strong>Butler</strong>’s liaison officer<br />

when you accept the scholarship and enroll.<br />

• If you decide to transfer or withdraw, notify<br />

both host and <strong>Butler</strong> liaison officers promptly.


Retaining a TE Scholarship<br />

• Students must meet the institution’s s<strong>at</strong>isfactory<br />

academic progress standards.<br />

• The family member whose employment conveyed<br />

eligibility for the scholarship must continue to meet<br />

eligibility criteria.<br />

• Reapply for renewal each year during the fall term<br />

for the following academic year. Early fall is best!


Other Steps to Take<br />

• Fill out a Free Applic<strong>at</strong>ion for Federal Student<br />

Aid (FAFSA) and have the results sent to all<br />

schools to which you are applying.<br />

• Be sure to contact the Office of Financial Aid<br />

<strong>at</strong> your host school if you wish to receive any<br />

aid beyond <strong>Tuition</strong> <strong>Exchange</strong> (student loans).
