APPE Reminders
Processes for the 2010-2011 APPE rotations are largely unchanged. The manual has been updated
and is available on the website as well as being circulated. Some reminders are listed below:
1. Please assist the students by scheduling the Mid-rotation Evaluation. Students will provide
a copy of the form (pg 20 APPE Manual) and are required to keep a copy in their
portfolio.
2. Descriptive statements were added last year for the Competency Check Sheet process.
These are reviewed again.
EE Consistently exceeds expectations. Independently completes most complex tasks and
all basic, routine tasks. Consistently performs at the level of an exceptional 4th year
ME Meets expectations. Requires guidance and directed questioning to complete some or
all complex tasks. Independently completes basic routine tasks. Performs at the level of an
these rotations can often help students with activities that get them involved in promoting
public awareness and providing information to the general public. Examples are: Talking
to school groups about drugs or pharmacy, participating in screening or immunization
programs/health fair activities, and preparing written brochures/posters directed toward
patients.
After a student has done several rotations, we encourage you to review their portfolio at
the beginning of the rotation to see what they have accomplished and how you might help
them complete their requirements. We have provided the students a planning tool (pg 30-
31, APPE Manual) to help them better identify certain activities they may need to
complete on a given rotation. On Pages 14-15, we have reorganized the list of portfolio
requirements to correspond with the sections of the Competency Check Sheet.
Preceptor Spotlight
George Hammons, owner of Knox Professional Pharmacy, Barbourville, KY was recently
featured in the Southern Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) publication “Faces of
Rural Healthcare.”
THE KENTUCKY PRECEPTOR 3
The following is a summation of the article in that publication:
George Hammons, a UK community-based faculty member since 1985 and the owner of Knox
Professional Pharmacy in Barbourville, was recently featured in the Southern KY. Mentor.
With such innovative ideas as a drive-through window and durable medical equipment, Mr.
Hammons opened his pharmacy in Barbourville in 1976. Now, decades later, Mr. Hammons
opens the concept of his novel thinking to students who take his Independent Pharmacy
Management rotation, which was begun in 2007 after pharmacist Karen Hubbs joined his
business and began managing the clinical aspects of student rotations.
As a mentor to pharmacy students, Mr. Hammons personalizes his training to fit the perspective
interest of each student and their desire to operate a pharmacy, whether it is with an emphasis on
the business of pharmacy education or the education of pharmacy business. Mr. Hammons will
effectually discuss with rotation students who have observed his business protocol why decisions
were made with regard to such issues as personnel matters, liability insurance, location, and third
party contracts.
Mr. Hammons, the consummate teacher, measures the bottom line of each day by asking the
question: Is my student profiting from this rotation?
Students, who have measured Mr. Hammons as a man of integrity, learn that it is important for
every successful independent pharmacy owner to be involved in their business; however, you
cannot be an expert in everything, therefore you must employ competent individuals to handle
those details and allow you to focus on your area of expertise.
