THE FIVE BOROUGHS OF NEW YORK
The city of New York is divided into five Boroughs: Manhattan, The Bronx,
Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island
Manhattan is located at the mouth of the Hudson River and is considered the
major commercial, financial, and cultural centre of the world. With the largest
central business district in the United States, it is the site of the New York Stock
Exchange and is the home to the largest number of corporate headquarters in
the country. Manhattan is where most visitors to the city choose to stay.
The Bronx with its wide variety of neighbourhoods including the affluent
Riverdale and Country Club combined with its cultural mix, The Bronx has
become a wellspring of both Latin music and hip hop.
Brooklyn is New York City’s most populous borough, with 2.5 million residents
and maintains a distinct culture, independent art scene, and unique architectural
heritage.
Queens is home to John F. Kennedy and La Guardia airports; it is also the
location of the New York Mets baseball team; the US Open tennis tournament;
Flushing Meadows Park; Kaufman Astoria Studios and Frank Sinatra School of
the Arts.
Staten Island is connected to Manhattan by the free Staten Island Ferry - a
popular tourist attraction, providing views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island
and lower Manhattan.
Central Park & the Upper East and West Sides
The Upper West Side is home to many of New York’s finest museums as well as
the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. The Upper East Side is home to luxury
real estate and boasts upmarket shopping along Madison and Fifth Avenues. It is
here where you will also find the Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern
Art (MoMa) Between the two sits one of New York’s crown jewels - the 843 acre
Central Park.
Midtown & The Times Square District
Spanning 30th Street to 59th Street from river to river, Midtown is home to many
of New York’s most iconic attractions. It is without question one of the busiest
and most vibrant areas of the city. It is here in midtown where you will find
bustling Times Square, the Theatre District with it’s many Broadway productions,
Madison Square Gardens, Rockerfeller Center, the Chrysler Building, St. Patrick’s
Cathedral, Trump Tower, Bryant Park, the beautifully restored Grand Central
Station and much more.
Chelsea
South of Midtown, Chelsea is home to the New York art scene with over 350
galleries from both established and up-and-coming artists plus the Chelsea
Art Museum.
Greenwich Village
Affectionately referred to as “The Village”, this area of the city has a distinctly
Bohemian atmosphere. It’s a great place to sit out on a sidewalk café, drink
a New York coffee and people watch! East Village, just north of Houston is
packed with experimental music clubs, theatres and cutting-edge fashion. It’s
a fascinating mix of affordable ethnic and trendy restaurants, start-up clothing
designers and kitschy boutiques, music clubs, and folk cafés. Several Off-
Broadway theatres also call this place home.
SoHo
SoHo “South of Houston Street” is undeniably glamorous and oh so chic! It’s
cobblestone streets are lined with impeccably restored buildings with impressive
cast-iron architecture, fashionable restaurants, and stylish boutiques.
Lower Manhattan Downtown & the Financial District
The Financial District is Manhattan’s original neighbourhood—historic sites and
high finance sit side by side on the narrow streets here. Lower Manhattan is
home to Wall Street & Ground Zero. From Battery Park ferries depart to Liberty
and Ellis Islands. Downtown is also the jumping-off point to take the Staten Island
Ferry for a free ride that brings great views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island
and New York Harbour.
