Melbourne to Sydney Heritage Drive Melbourne to Sydney Heritage Drive 6 days / 5 nights from Melbourne Day 1: Melbourne to Bendigo (Distance 170kms – 2 hours 30 minutes) The freeway from Melbourne to Bendigo leads past idyllic Mount Macedon and through Victoria’s apple region Harcourt Valley. In Bendigo, discover the city’s rich past with a day visiting attractions. Discover gold history at Central Deborah Gold Mine, view some of Australia’s most significant artwork at Bendigo Art Gallery or wander through the historic streets admiring boomtime architecture. At the Golden Dragon Museum learn about Bendigo’s rich Chinese heritage or see Australia’s oldest working pottery at Bendigo Pottery. Overnight: Bendigo Day 2: Bendigo to Echuca-Moama (Distance 100kms – 1 hour) Head north from Bendigo along the Midland Highway towards Echuca and Moama, towns built on the pioneering history of the riverboat trade. From the 1860s to 1900, Echuca-Moama was the hub of Australia’s riverboat trade. Board a paddle steamer cruise and experience the magical Murray River. You will find many of the original buildings still standing in High Street and occupied by boutique-style shops, accommodation and restaurants. Overnight: Echuca Moama Day 3: Echuca-Moama to Yarrawonga-Mulwala (Distance 150kms – 1 hour 30 mintues) The journey to Yarrawonga-Mulwala weaves you back along the Murray River through a rich farming district. Stop at farm gates to stock up on fresh seasonal produce straight from the producer. Gain a glimpse of the pioneering history of this region at the first home in the region – Byramine Homestead. It is classified by the National Trust and was the home of one of Australia’s earliest pioneers, Elizabeth Hume. Yarrawonga-Muwlala is home to the largest public access golfing complex in the southern hemisphere with two 18 hole championship courses and a nine hole executive course – 45 holes in all! Overnight: Corowa Day 4: Yarrawonga to Albury-Wodonga (Distance 125kms – 1 hour 30 minutes) It is a short journey to Albury-Wodonga, a thriving inland city with a cosmopolitan restaurant and café culture. Beautifully set amid rolling valleys, these two towns truly capture the life of the Murray River. Fishing and canoeing or kayaking can be enjoyed on the Murray and Mitta Mitta rivers and at Lake Hume. Lake Hume is capable of holding 3,000,000 megalitres of water, approximately five times the volume of Sydney Harbour. Water is retained nearly 40 kilometres up both river valleys making it a wonderful area for sailing and water skiing. There is no shortage of golfing around Albury-Wodonga either. Overnight: Albury Day 5: Albury-Wodonga to Canberra (Distance 345kms – 4 hours) Take the Hume Highway north to Canberra. This well-planned city was established in 1911 to create a capital for the newly federated country of Australia. Hidden beneath Canberra’s leafy surrounds is a thriving modern city with national attractions that hold and share the treasures of the nation. Key attractions include National Museum of Australia, old and new Parliament House, Cockington Green, the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian War Memorial and Questacon. Nearby vineyards and great restaurants across Australia’s Capital City compliment the great attractions and shopping. Overnight: Canberra Day 6: Canberra to Sydney (Distance 280kms – 3 hours) The final leg of the journey leaves Canberra and charts a course to Goulburn, with a rich pioneer history, and through the Southern Highlands to Australia’s most famous city, Sydney. There are also the quaint villages and towns of Moss Vale, Bowral, Mittagong and Berrima with lots of antique and craft shops and relaxing cafes. Kiwi’s will love Bowral’s Sir Donald Bradman Museum. The final section of the drive along the Hume Highway takes you through the southwestern suburbs of Sydney. Yarra Valley, Phillip Island & the Mornington Peninsula 4 days / 3 nights from Melbourne Day 1: Melbourne to Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges (Distance 56kms – 1 hour) From Melbourne take the Eastern Freeway out towards Ringwood and then onto the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. Spend the morning on Australia’s favourite steam train, Puffing Billy. Now 110 years old, Puffing Billy chugs along a 24km track through vast forest, fern gullies, farmlands and villages on daily scenic excursions. For lunch the Yarra Valley offers mouth watering options for either a casual lunch or a complete food and wine experience. The beautiful De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate has a cellar door featuring the estate’s superb cool climate wines, a cheese shop which matures local and international cheeses and the very stylish Locale Restaurant which matches rustic Italian cuisine to De Bortoli wines. There are more than 90 wineries with cellar doors in the Valley so the only problem will be which one to choose from. If time allows after lunch travel out to Healesville Sanctuary for a walk amongst the 200 native Australian species including koalas, kangaroos, platypus, reptiles and many colourful birds. Overnight: Yarra Valley Day 2: Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to Phillip Island (Distance 140kms – 1 hour 30 minutes) Only 90 minutes drive south from the Yarra Valley through Pakenham, down the Bass Highway, is Phillip Island. This is a little gem of an island, with great natural beauty, plentiful wildlife, colourful seaside villages to explore and an intriguing choice of attractions from pure fun to pumped-up action. In the morning visit the Chocolate Factory for a sensational chocolate fix. You can make your own chocolate at the Amazing <strong>World</strong> of Chocolate exhibition, see the chocolate factory, and sip real hot chocolate at the café and stock up on supplies. An outrageously delicious experience. For lunch choose from either Churchill Island Heritage Farm or A Maze ‘N’ Things both attractions have a café to enjoy. Wander around the historic farm with its mellow old buildings, beautiful gardens and walking tracks or take the wild path and go crazy in A Maze ‘N’ Things with its crazy optical illusions, puzzles, maze and memory tests. Phillip Island is home to the largest little penguin colony in the world, and is Australia’s most popular wildlife attraction. Up to 1000 penguins emerge from the sea in the evening, heading across the beach to their sand dune burrows. Ensure you book a Penguin Parade Tour for the viewing so you don’t miss out. Overnight: Phillip Island Day 3: Phillip Island to the Mornington Peninsula (Distance 105km – about 1 hour) Drive back up to the Bass Highway and in 60 minutes you will be on the Mornington Peninsula. A small but beautiful region of extraordinary contrast, the peaceful hinterland is home to many of Victoria’s top wineries, while three magnificent coastlines have dozens of beaches edged by calm waters and untamed ocean. Spend your morning (Nov to Apr) indulging in every imaginable strawberry delight at Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm. With sweet treats including strawberry ice cream, strawberry liqueurs and local gourmet products. Delicious! For lunch try Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove you will feel like you have been transported to the south of France, with its award-winning restaurant overlooking hillsides of vines, casual piazza and garden dining, highly rated wines, cellar door, estate olive oil and lush vegetable and herb gardens. End your day relaxing at the Peninsula Hot Springs, swim in the hot pools or enjoy a relaxing massage.
