FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER John Cassavetes Weekend – Single Bill SHADOWS 12A 6.30PM (John Cassavetes, USA, 1959) 87m With Leila Goldoni, Ben Carruthers, Hugh Hurd “Cassavetes hugely influential ‘improvisation’ centres on two brothers and a sister – black, but passing for white – leading a Bohemian life in New York. The electric atmosphere and edgily naturalistic performances combine with free-focus black and white camerawork and Charles Mingus’ bluesy score to evoke the jazzy soul of a city.’ – GEOFF ANDREW. Revived in a new print. FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER John Cassavetes Weekend – Single Bill OPENING NIGHT 15 8.20PM (John Cassavetes, USA, 1977) 144m With Gena Rowlands, Ben Gazarra, John Cassavates Gena Rowlands plays Myrtle Gordon, a Broadway star cast in a new play as a middle-aged woman of declining sexual power. Reluctant to accept her age and fearful that she will be typecast as an older woman, she is also haunted by visions of a dead girl – an adoring young fan killed in a car accident – whom she sees as a figment of her younger self. She begins to unravel. An overlooked masterpiece of the 1970s. Revived in a new print. SATURDAY 29 SEPTEMBER John Cassavetes Weekend – Single Bill A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE 15 2.30PM (John Cassavetes, USA, 1974) 155m “Construction worker Peter Falk finds his support for wife Gena Rowlands wearing thin as her behaviour becomes increasingly wayward. But who’s crazy here, and why? At once funny, emotionally draining and admirably ambivalent in its response to questions of health, happiness and normality, this was one of Cassavetes’ greatest successes.” – GEOFF ANDREW. Revived in a new print. 11
