about RallyCross from NER.
Every month opportunities come to NER for participation in events where we can present our
club to motorsports enthusiasts or people who enjoy their cars. We need someone to co-ordinate
these activities, someone who will provide guidance and materials to our members who are
interested in helping recruit more members and publicize our activities.
The Board of Directors has placed a “Help Wanted” ad on the NER
website for a publicity chairman. If you are interested or know someone
who is—please contact me or Chris Franson.
Earlier this Spring I had an opportunity to take a school and work on my
driving. My whole responsibility that day was
to drive the car and learn to drive better. Wow!
What a great day I had. I met people who told me
about the good and not-so-good things at different
clubs’ events, a lot to be learned from those
comments. I left as soon as I was done running,
another strange experience. Probably just as
on helping other people get faster. I know that as a result of changing
roles at one event, I will be able to do a better job not only competing
but as an event organizer. It’s a one-event change that I would suggest
everyone try, no matter what you do in the club—compete, organize
or come to events as a worker. It will give you great insight into the
club.
2006 NER FIRE SCHOOL AT NHIS...
a Flaming Success!
by Leigh McBride
April 22, 206, It was a cold and blustery day at NHIS, but the fire wasn’t lit to warm
us up. We were at the 2006 New England Region Fire School, learning how to
respond to a car fire. Most of us had never before set off a fire extinguisher or been
face to face with a car fire. When school was over, we all had experienced both,
and we felt better equipped to respond to a car fire on the track.
Peter Villaume, AKA Thumper, from Fire/Rescue, put on a good show, complete with
handout. Since the fire school took place during the Driver’s School, Neil MacArthur,
Chief of Fire/Rescue, held down the fort in Fire/Rescue while Thumper was putting on
the school. Thumper began by reinforcing some important points to remember when
responding to a car fire:
• Keep yourself safe
• Get backup help
• Always take a fire extinguisher
with you when responding to a car
(whether it's on fire or not)
In order to get backup help, whether from other
workers on your station, from nearby stations, or
dispatched from control, you need to know the
hand signals for “I NEED HELP” and “NOW”.
Learn these hand signals now, before you need
them, so that you will be able to communicate
quickly what you need in a real emergency. Yelling
doesn’t work, and chances are you won’t be the one wearing the radio.
Fire Safety, Response and Extinquish... part
of the training of our very fine F & C and
rescue! Photo: Leigh McBride
As with any emergency it is best to learn first in a classroom how to respond, and
to have a simulated response experience before you find yourself in a real-life
emergency.
When responding to a car fire, think “PASS”:
P Pull the pin before you get to the car
A Aim at the bottom of the flames or where you think the fire is originating under
the cowling
S Squeeze the handle completely (and release when you think the fire is suppressed)
S Sweep the end of the nozzle of the extinguisher (if possible) to cover a larger area
Thumper also suggested putting your thumb over the end of the nozzle to widen out
the spray, such as you would with a garden hose.
After Thumper gave us a little lecture covering the basics, he lit the flame under
the “hood” of a simulated car he designed just for this purpose. We donned
fireman’s gear and put out the fire. Each of us had the opportunity to do this as a
solo responder, and Thumper let us do it as many times as we wanted, until we felt
comfortable “PASS-ing”—Pulling the pin, Aiming the extinguisher, Squeezing the
handle and Sweeping the nozzle. I was surprised at how easy it was to extinguish a
small fire like this.
Open House Events Focused On Recruiting Volunteers For SCCA Club Racing Specialties
By Paul Giblin
The NER SCCA Open House events recently
hosted by the NH Community Technical
College in Nashua, NH on Saturday, March
25, 2006 and the NH Community Technical
College in Manchester, NH on April 8, 2006,
were both very successful. Combined, the
NER SCCA Open House events attracted
well over 60 individuals ranging in age from
18 to 72, primarily from south central New
Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts.
Both events took place at the Automotive
Technology Centers at the New Hampshire
Community Technical Colleges located in
Nashua and Manchester, NH and exposed
attendees to what SCCA Club Racing and
volunteering is all about. The events also
provided guests with information on the
track-side specialties required to support Club
Racing events.
Attendees at both NER Open House events
were also treated to a wonderful display of
SCCA race-prepared cars. Drivers displaying
their race cars and serving as Hosts at the
Nashua, NH Open House event included
Krista Botsford (Formula Ford), Buddy Werner
(ITC Ford Escort), Paul Faford (Formula Vee)
and Dave Maynard (ITE BMW). Drivers
displaying their race cars and serving as
Hosts at the Manchester Open House event
included Mike Lavigne (AS Ford Mustang),
David Patten (GT3 Datsun 510), Krista
Botsford (Formula Ford), Paul Faford (Formula
Vee), Mark Bellerose (Formula Ford) and Fred
Mahler (Ford Mustang). Also serving as Hosts
at the Nashua, NH Open House event were
Brian and Kristine Mushnick.
Track-side specialties represented at both
NER Open House events included Timing and
Scoring (Denise Patten and Laura Villaume),
Registration (Peg Dowd), Scrutineering (Scott
Dowd & Patrick Villaume), Fire and Rescue
Services (Neil Macarthur & Peter Villaume),
Sound Control (Peter Perrault), Grid (Karen
Petersen), Flagging and Communications (Dan
Hoffman, David White, Fred Mahler, Leigh
McBride and Mack McCormack), Pits (Dick
and Colette Babcock), Starter & Merchandise
Sales (Donna Stevens). In addition, officials
provided complimentary snacks and beverages,
a raffle for volunteers and information on free
90-day SCCA memberships for those willing to
commit as volunteers with the various track-side
specialties.
Special thanks go out to Mr. Dan Jones, the
Automotive Technology Program Coordinator
from the NH Community Technical College
in Nashua, NH and Mr. Marc Bellerose, the
Automotive Technology Department Chairman
from the NH Community Technical College in
Manchester, NH, for hosting both NER SCCA
Open House events this year. There’s absolutely
no question that the NER Open House events
would have been nearly as successful as they
were without the help and guidance provided
by these two very dedicated and talented
individuals.
In addition to the two NER Open House events
hosted this spring in Nashua and Manchester,
NER will also be represented at two additional
public relations events later this summer. On
June 11, 2006, NER will be represented with
a display and an SCCA race car at the annual
Rock ‘N Rib Fest at the Anheuser Busch brewing
facility located on Route 3 in Merrimack,
NH. Hosted by the Nashua Rotary Club, this
enormous street rod and custom car show
attracts thousands of spectators and hundreds of
street rod and custom car owners to an all-day
event each and every year.
In October, on a date to be announced,
NER will again host a display and distribute
membership information at New Hampshire
International Speedway in Loudon, NH where
the New Hampshire Auto Dealers Association
will again be hosting their annual Technical
College Fair. NER officials attended this event
last year they’re looking forward once again to
talking with hundreds of college-aged students
who might be interested in becoming actively
involved with NER SCCA.
Help Lime Rock by Slowing Down!
The entire staff here welcomes you and your
fellow club members back to Lime Rock Park.
You may be aware that we have approached
area townspeople regarding certain
components of our injunction and we are
excited that they are open to some possible
changes. One very positive thing that we
have achieved so far in speaking with the local
residents is that we have opened up a real
dialogue about how Lime Rock Park affects
their lives both positively and negatively. And
while there are many positive things that the
track visitors bring into our community, the one
overwhelming negative we heard is that race
participants and fans speed along the roads
entering and leaving the track.
We are writing to ask that you and your club
make every effort to obey all local speed limits
and help us all in our community relations.
Lime Rock Park prides itself on being a good
neighbor and community member and we
ask that you help us deal with this speeding
problem.
We encourage your feedback and are happy
to respond to any questions you may have. We
look forward to a safe season with you!
Trailering 101 Memories
Stephanie’s item Four :Hey Dad... Brought back
some old memories of summers past and old
friends. If she actually did forget the identity of
driver who destroyed the trailer at Lime Rock,
it was Bill Throup. If I remember correctly, the
trailer, a POS, was borrowed. The car was
the most beautifully race prepared TR-4 ever
assembled. At the time. Bill lived in Washington,
CT which fortunately was not too far from the
track. Karen P. may remember more details.
Does anyone know what happened to Bill?
RallyCross Runs Back-to-Back at the Dogtrack
By Scott Beliveau
Arthur Chabot triumphed for the third event in a
row, and second at the facility formerly known
as the Lakes Region Greyhound Track. Sunny
skies smiled on the RallyCross ranks as event
#3 of the RallyCross Championship ran at the
“dogtrack” on April 15th.
The two-wheel drive modified class was large
and varied. Hal Denham dominated the class,
winning by seven seconds in his eight valve
VW GTI. A rare 2wd Subaru Impreza, driven
by Kevin Turner captured second, while a Saab
managed third. Tom Manning, a former NER
regular, has moved to Washington DC Region,
but usually makes at least one appearance
a year back at home piloting his Saab.
This class also contained a Renault, a
Saturn wagon, a Toyota Cressida and
Corolla, and a Plymouth Arrow.
Not only was the venue the same for two
events in a row, but the 4wd modified
finish order was identical as well. 2005
4wd Modified Champion Arthur Chabot
continued his hot streak by winning 4wd
Modified and the overall event. Late
last year, Chabot moved from his street
modified Mitsubishi Gallant VR-4 to a fully
rally prepared VR-4. Different car, same
esults; Arthur can just plain drive. Allan Dennis
driving his rally prepared Eagle Talon has been
hot on Chabot’s heals all year. And rounding
out the March duplication, Kory Rooks took his
modified turbo Toyota Pickup to a third place
finish.
Subaru swept the 4wd Prepped class. Rich
Swan and his WRX led the way, followed by
Brian Goss’ WRX and Kathy Moody in her 2.5
RS. Positions three thru seven were separated
by a total of six seconds. Nick Holland wedged
his Mitsubishi EVO 8 into the middle of the
heavily Subaru field.
April usually finds the RX gang at Loon
Mountain’s South Mountain area. Newly begun
construction on a new base lodge and condos
has ended three years of fun at Loon. We thank
Loon for the opportunity to play there during the
formative years of NER RallyCross. In March,
RallyCross racing took place at the dogtrack
in Belmont, NH. The ground was frozen,
almost like pavement, until late afternoon,
when it finally thawed a little showing some
soft sandy areas. Upon return in April, there
was no frozen to be found. The soft sandy
conditions kept the corner workers and Safety
Stewards busy, raking and picking rocks to
protect cars from damage. Well done to all that
participated in this aspect of the day.
In the 2wd prepped classes, first timer Scott
Carlson bested Matt Anderson in a VW vs.
Toyota shoot out. Kory Rooks drove his Toyota
Supra to the Rear Prepped class win over Dave
Burdens Cadillac Limo. Dave did an awesome
job captaining that ship through the course. I
wonder how many limousines besides Dave’s
have ever had rally tires lugged on? In 2wd
Stock class, Chris Rizzon, pushed hard all day
and landed his Saab on the top step of the
podium for the third straight event in 2006.
Chris was chased by Jon Dresser, VW Golf, and
Michael Beliveau, Saab.
The top six spots of 4wd Stock class were
closely packed over a seven second stretch of
time. Scott Beliveau put his Toyota RallyTruck on
the podium after a long absence. Second, was
Cliff Collins in his Mazda 323. Nick Nemchuck
PIT TALK
Road racing notes
by Brian Mushnick,
NER Road Racing Chairman
Well we finished our first driver school, our first
Regional Race, and our first National Race. And it’s
not even June.
Memorial Day weekend has road racing at NHIS for
a double Regional. The original format called for a
triple Regional. Unfortunately, we would have been
out of compliance with the GCR had we operated the event as originally
planned.
The new structure has us operating a double Regional with a qualifying
race. All three races will award NERRC points, but a competitor will only
receive NARRC points for the two sanctioned regional races.
On the Monday of Memorial Day weekend we will operate a Performance
Drivers Evenbt (PDE): our first in many years. PDE’s are part of the newly
formed Time Trial (TT) division of SCCA. TT now falls under Road Racing.
PDE is the first of four TT levels. This day is going to be as much fun as it
will be educational. If you have not signed up, please check www.NER.
org for last minute information. There is a 100-entrant maximum. Our Chief
Steward is Peter Roberts with Noam Levine taking on the duties of Chief
Instructor.
In June, we will hold our second National race, our second driver school
and our fourth Regional race at Lime Rock Park. Volunteers are always
welcome.
Looking forward, our 6-hour enduro will be in August during the RAL
weekend. We will need extra help in all specialties for this growing event.
Pledge sheets will be available on www.NER.org in June. All you have
to do is print the form and find your sponsors. Money will be collect at the
track or can be sent to Elizabeth Ames (info on front cover). Last year Road
Racing raise
WANNA FLAG?
By Mack McCormack
The Flags & What They Mean
Now that you have set up your corner station, taken the flags out of the flag bag
and made sure that they are in good condition and none are missing, it is time to
position them for use. The yellow, white and blue (actually blue with a diagonal
yellow stripe) flags will be used the most so they are positioned close to where the
flaggers will stand. The surface flag (red alternating with yellow stripes) is kept
nearby for quick access. The red and black flags can be placed a little further
away, but still need to be reached quickly when called for by Control. Remember
that the flags are your way of communicating with the drivers. The flags displayed
give information about events happening in the sector from your flag station to the
next flag station. Thus, a flag is never displayed for something in front of you, no
matter how close it is to your flag station. Each flag, and the way it is displayed,
has a special meaning.
White Flag
The first flag you will use on any given weekend is the white flag which is held
by the blue flagger. It is displayed standing (that is, stationary or not waved) at
each station for the first lap of the first practice or qualifying session for each
race group to let the drivers know the location of the flag station. However, for
the rest of the event, it means that a slow moving vehicle is on track. It may be
a race car limping back to the pits with a mechanical problem or an emergency
vehicle such as an ambulance, wrecker or fire/rescue vehicle. It could even be
the worker transport vehicle doing a snack run during a victory lap. It is displayed
standing, two stations prior to the slow moving vehicle. For this reason, it is
important to indicate to Control that a white flag is displayed. The call should
be very brief and recognition is not required from control, “Station 8 is white for
wrecker on course”. This tells Station 7 to put out their white flag too, a reaction
that is assumed by Control and need not be reported on the radio. As the wrecker
passes Station 9, their communicator will say, “Station 9 is white for wrecker”.
This tells Control that the wrecker has made it to Station 9 and also tells Station
7 that they can drop their white flag. The slow moving vehicle is then followed
around the course with what is called “trailing white flags” at the two stations
just prior to where the slow vehicle is at any given time. These white flags tell the
driver, “Caution, you are approaching a slow moving vehicle (in this example a
wrecker) and may need to adjust your speed and line accordingly”. Drivers are
allowed to pass such vehicle. However, when that slow moving vehicle comes to
a stop the white flag is withdrawn and the vehicle is covered by the appropriate
use of the yellow flag.
Yellow Flag
The next flag is the yellow flag which has several meanings depending on how
it is displayed. The yellow flagger is looking down track, with his/her back to
traffic, and must be able to see the entire sector from his/her flag station to the
next station. A standing or stationary yellow flag, held with both hands over one’s
head, means, “Caution, danger, slow down, NO PASSING from the flag to the
site of the incident”. The fact that it is standing also tells the driver that there is no
obstruction on the racing surface, however there is a hazard in the area. It could
be a car just off course or an emergency vehicle or corner worker attending to a
10 PIT TALK
disabled vehicle. The fact that there is no passing
allows the drivers to slow down without fear of
being overtaken and losing track position. Once
the yellow goes out, all workers on station should
be looking for passes under the yellow, which
will be reported to control and the stewards. If
the incident (for instance a disabled vehicle) is,
at the discretion of the stewards not considered
to be a hazard, and will be left in that location
for the remainder of the session, the standing
yellow flag will be held for two laps and then
withdrawn. That vehicle has now become a part
of the course.
A waved yellow flag means, “Great danger,
slow down, be prepared to stop, NO PASSING
from the flag to the incident.” The fact that the
flag is waved also tells the driver that there is
an obstruction on the racing surface and that
evasive action will most likely be necessary.
It could be a car or a large portion of a car
such as a nose or rear cowling. There may also
be stopped emergency vehicles on the track.
The practice of “protecting” a corner worker
responding to a vehicle that is off the course by
upgrading from a standing yellow to a waving
yellow is inappropriate, unless the worker is
indeed on the track surface. In either case, a
mere flag can never protect a worker.
The new flagger reminder for when to wave, or
not wave, the yellow flag is, “Waving on the
paving; standing in the grass...do not pass”.
During a race, double standing yellow flags
may be displayed at ALL stations only at the
order of the operating steward via Control.
This may also be referred to as a “full course
yellow”. Two yellow flags are displayed side by
side by holding the sticks together in one hand
and the free edge of both flags in the other.
The flags can be stabilized and made easier to
hold by rolling the flags one turn onto the sticks.
Double standing yellow at every station tells the
driver that “the entire course is under a caution
condition, SLOW DOWN, NO PASSING of
other competitors”. A pace car may be deployed
to control the speed of the field. Passing of the
pace car may take place only by a wave-by from
the passenger in the pace car. This will be done
until the leader is behind the pace car. Cars may
cautiously pass emergency vehicles and cars
that are disabled and cannot maintain the pace,
as indicated by a raised arm on the part of the
slow driver. At the site of the incident, one flag
may be held stationary and the other waved
to indicate an obstruction on the track. Double
standing yellow flag condition will also be used,
with or without a pace car, during pace laps
before the start of a race or a re-start.
Green Flag
In SCCA club rules, the green flag is used to
indicate that the race is underway and it is
displayed only by the starter. It indicates that the
course is clear. In certain Pro events, where FIA
and Unified North American Flagging rules are
employed, green flags are also displayed at all
stations for the first lap after the start (or re-start)
of a race. Likewise, a green flag is displayed
at a station immediately after a station that is
displaying a yellow flag to indicate that the
course is clear. In such cases, it also delineates
the end of the no-passing zone in distinction to
the site of the incident as used in SCCA club
rules.
Blue Flag
The blue flagger is positioned facing up-track,
looking right at the yellow flagger and at the
on-coming traffic. THE PRIME RESPONSIBILITY
OF THE BLUE FLAGGER IS TO WATCH THE
WANNA FLAG?
—continued from the previous page
BACK OF THE YELLOW FLAGGER. If you are
the yellow flagger and your blue flagger grabs
you, don’t resist. Go with him to safety. It takes
too much time to tell someone to move and
then wait for their reaction, which is usually to
turn around and look at what is about to hit
your station. You can’t outrun a race car. Better
to drop behind the safety of the guard rail
which will also protect you from debris that will
continue at the car’s speed after impact occurs.
The blue flag (actually blue with a diagonal
yellow stripe) tells the driver that, “another
competitor is following you very closely and
is trying to overtake you, CHECK YOUR
MIRRORS”. During practice and qualifying
sessions this flag is used liberally. During a
race, however, it is only used to indicate to
the back of the field that the leaders are about
to overtake. Thus it is seldom used for the first
half of a race, unless there are cars of different
classes with wide speed differentials in the
same race group. Also, occasionally, a very
fast car will start from the back of the grid,
either for mechanical reasons or penalty. In
such cases, use of a blue flag is appropriate.
Most seasoned flaggers will agree that blue
flagging is the most challenging and fun flag
position on a corner. It requires concentration
to memorize the faster and slower cars and
estimate the closing speed of two cars to
determine if a blue flag is appropriate. Timing
of the blue flag is everything. It must be given
well before the turn-in point for your corner.
Once the driver has initiated turn-in, his eyes
are focused on the apex and he is committed
to that corner. He will never see your blue flag.
This is especially important for corners with
major overtaking areas (heavy braking zones)
such as Station 2 at Lime Rock and Station 3
at NHIS.
Surface Flag
The surface condition flag (yellow with vertical
red stripes) is displayed standing (never
waving) for a slippery surface condition on
the track. Most commonly, it represents oil but
could easily be water, fuel, dirt, gravel, sand,
grass, mud or any other substance, including
small car parts that can be driven over, or even
a cone. Larger parts should be covered by
the appropriate yellow flag. The surface flag,
often called debris or oil flag, tells the driver,
“Caution, there is something on the track that
12 PIT TALK
you can drive over but it will likely affect the
adhesion of your tires and you may want to
slow down a bit and/or look to avoid it”. The
surface flag is displayed at the discretion of the
workers on a given corner. Control is notified
because the condition may exist at more than
one station (eg. an oil stripe). Under racing
conditions, the surface flag is withdrawn when
there is an improvement in the condition or
after two laps, whichever comes first. After
two laps all drivers should be aware of the
situation, and the surface flag may be needed
again to indicate a new surface condition.
Black Flag
The black flag (solid black) may be displayed
at all stations under a condition known as
Not covered by the SCCA, GCR, NER
welcomes all racers with the official flag/icon
“black flag all”, only when called for by the
stewards via control. It will often be displayed
with an “ALL” sign at Start/Finish and at the
designated black flag station (Station 5 at
NHIS and Station 10 at Lime Rock). A standing
black flag at every station tells the drivers, “The
session (practice/qualifying) has been stopped,
proceed directly to the pits. Do not take another
lap”.
The black flag may be displayed individually at
Start or at the Black Flag Station, usually with a
number board indicating the number of the car
to which it is being given. Depending on how
it is shown, it has different meanings. A furled
(rolled-up) black flag pointed at the offending
driver is a warning to that driver that he has
done something wrong out on the track. The
stewards are aware of it, and will be watching
him for further indiscretions. If he does it again,
an open black flag will be shown. The open
black flag, displayed at Start and the Black
Flag Station, again with a number board,
indicate to that driver that he is to come to the
pits, on that lap, and see the Pit Steward for a
reprimand or penalty. The operating steward
will have notified the pit steward about what
that driver did wrong.
Mechanical Black Flag
The mechanical black flag (black with orange
ball), or “meatball” as it is often referred to, is
shown to a specific car, with a number board
at the black flag station. It indicates to the
driver that there is something mechanically
wrong with his racecar and that he is to return
to the pits immediately to correct the problem.
It is given, most commonly, for a car that is
dropping oil but could also be given for any
mechanical problem identified by the corner
workers or the driver’s crew. Common reasons
for a mechanical black flag include no window
net, a loose hood pin, a dragging exhaust or
loose wheel. Rarely, a car could be on fire and
the driver does not know it. In such a case, the
corner worker will shake a fire extinguisher at
the driver. It is not a flag, but the message is
communicated to the driver, loud and clear,
when every station on the track is waving a fire
bottle at him!
In order to facilitate the accurate display of the
open black flag or mechanical black flag to
the correct driver, the black flag station and
Start will ask for a “point”. This means that
the stations preceding the black flag station
will announce, over the net, that “car # 55
yellow” is at their station and that the black
flag station or start can expect him next. During
a “black flag procedure” all other stations
should maintain radio silence except for an
emergency.
Checkered Flag
The checkered flag (black and white checks)
tells the driver, “You have finished the race or
practice/qualifying session, continue cautiously
to the pits”. The checkered flag is usually
shown only at Start, but may be shown at other
stations during practice sessions to shorten turn
around time between groups.
Red Flag
The red flag (solid red) is displayed standing at all stations
simultaneously, only at the command of the operating steward via
Control. It means “extreme danger, the session is stopped. Come to
an immediate, controlled stop at the side of the track and await further
instructions”. The red flag is usually displayed when an incident has
created a full course blockage to the flow of cars on the race track.
Drivers should pull to the edge of the race track to allow for passage of
emergency vehicles. Only after all competition vehicles have come to a
stop, will drivers be released from a red flag condition by the display
of a black flag at all stations, indicating that they should proceed
cautiously to the pits. The red flag is not displayed often, but when it is,
it must be heeded immediately to prevent further incident. Although it is
displayed open and standing, it can be rocked side-to-side to catch the
driver’s attention. In FIA and North American Unified Flag rules (at Pro
events) the red flag is displayed waving, and has the same meaning
as the “black flag all” flag condition in SCCA club rules. Thus at a Pro
event, there is no way to stop all race traffic on the track.
Multiple Flags
Multiple flags can be displayed at the same station to convey complex
course conditions and situations to the drivers. It is not unusual to see a
waved yellow and a stationary surface flag at the same corner. There
could also be a white flag shown at the same station. However, since a
yellow flag implies “no passing” a yellow and blue flag will NEVER be
shown at the same station.
WORKER
OF THE EVENT
April —NHIS,
Opening Day Regional
By Carla Mahler
Q. How did you get
involved in the SCCA?
A. My interest in racing started
long before my involvement in
SCCA.Somewhere around the
age of eleven or twelve when
ABC aired the 24hrs of Lemans
and F1 races. Around 15 or
16 I began following local short
tracks, Norwood, Seekonk,
Westborough, Riverside, and
even did some drag racing in my
old Ford at Orange in the early
60’s. My start in SCCA came
through a friend, Shelly Sadwin.
In 1973 Shelly invited me to
crew for his ALEXIS FF and here I
am.
Q. Have you ever been
involved in any other ways
within the SCCA?
Richard Babcock, Chief of Pits
was awarded THE WORKER OF
THE EVENT, for the opening day
Regional and Drivers School held
at NHIS.
A. Yes. First as a wrench for both Shelly and Alan Sadwin with FF and
F and G prod spitfires, 3yrs as a national lic. flagger, tech. inspector, 5yrs
as chief of tech, and a season as a steward in training. After some years
away from racing I came back in 1996 and did some time in grid and
then in the pits and became chief in 2000.
Q. Was your experience enjoyable?
A. Yes, both memorable and enjoyable and way too many war stories.
Q. Would there be another area that you would be interested
in volunteering?
A. Possibly as race chair sometime down the line.
Q. Do you have any family members involved in the SCCA?
A. My wife Colette has been with me most every race from the first and
has been actively involved.
With the cool temperatures of the opening regional weekend, Dan
Hofmann took advantage of his Rookie-of-the-Year boxerwear for a little
additional warmth. Photo: Leigh McBride
Q. Is there any areas that you feel need improvement? If so,
why?
A. Yes. But early season race communication get better.
NER Solo
By: Bob Lang
Solo Event One Summary
The 2006 Solo season started off pretty much the way the 2005 season
ended...WET. 80 brave souls made the trek to NHIS and turned times over
the Paul Zahornasky designed course. Everyone had a chance at 6 runs,
although quite a few folks elected to skip afternoon runs.
But wait—there’s lots of new event related stuff. First off, Jerry and Mike
Shields did a lot of work on the truck to help events run smoother...included
in the changes: a new side-view window so the timing scoring folks can see
the start line. The shelves in the truck were all rearranged so that the truck
can be loaded/unloaded more easily and the truck was re-painted which
was no small feat. Thanks go out to everyone the lent a hand on the project
including your Solo Chair Mark Goodale who spent hours stripping the old
paint off. Talk about going above and beyond!
We also started making announcements over the radio (95.1 FM) as soon
as the PA was set up, so folks could get a heads up on the day’s event and
listen to some tunes while mounting tires and walking the course. The first
tune: Back in the Saddle, of course. We hope to improve on this feature
and if you have any ideas for announcements (or even the tunes that we
play), please let us know. Don’t forget that we’re trying to have themes for
the events this year...
As stated, the weather was wet. It actually covered the whole range of
wet including sleet, light rain, heavier rain, overcast and then more rain.
For a moment, it looked like the first afternoon run group would get runs
on a drying course. However, fate intervened and a certain C Mod car
managed to dump nearly the entire contents of the engine sump on course
after a hose burst just off the start line. The entire course was oiled-down
and we then spent the next 45 minutes or so spreading more than 250
pounds of Speedi-Dri to soak up the mess. Of course the rain started again
as soon as the course was cleared. This led to some interesting runs as
everybody re-oriented to the course. As the afternoon progressed, the times
continued to drop.
Not surprisingly, the AWD Subies managed class wins in several classes.
Other class news: STS looks to be quite the class this year with a few
drivers renting rides from Fun Hondas and the Nate Whipple machine.
Josh Allen was top PAX in his WRX in STX. Next in line were Matt Colburn
(AS Subie), Brian Levesque (EP Honda), Chang Ho Kim (STX Honda) and
Michael Canny (AS Subie).
FTD was Tyson Sayer in his CM Reynard.
The next points event will be May 7th followed by points event three at
Devens. Next on the calendar after that is the Devens National Tour which
promises to be a better event than 2005’s edition. If you aren’t going to
compete in the Tour, make it a point to come by and watch some of the
action, you won’t be dissapointed. Better yet, get your entry fee in and be
part of the action.
Fire School
—continued from page 4
We also learned very quickly, because it was a windy day, to stay upwind
of the fire! If you must be downwind, hold your breath and try not to
inhale the dry chemical powder from the extinguisher. After we all felt
comfortable putting out a small fire alone, we paired up to respond to a
more serious fire, one that started under the hood and spread to involve
the driver’s compartment. The first responder aimed under the hood, while
the backup responder aimed in the driver’s compartment. We were taught
to try not to spray it all over the driver (or your co-worker!), as the dry
chemical is toxic to your lungs and can cause serious respiratory damage.
While this is preferable to being burned to death, it is best to try to avoid
it as much as possible. These fires were more difficult to put out, and
highlighted the need to get backup help immediately—some of these fires
required more than two extinguishers to completely quench the flames.
Thumper told us that those crash-and-explode scenes from the action
movies don’t happen in real life at the track, and we should be very
thankful they don’t! There are many protections built into race cars to
prevent flame from coming into contact with the contents of a gas tank
or spreading throughout the car. There is a firewall between the driver’s
compartment and the engine to prevent the spread of a fire. Fuel cells are
composed of a tear-resistant synthetic rubber bladder inside a metal tank.
If the tank is punctured or crushed, the bladder is displaced, preventing it
from bursting and spilling fuel. In addition, inside the tank is open-celled
foam, like a sponge, which further prevents a rapid spill of fuel if the
bladder should be ruptured.
Have you ever thought about how the clothing you’re wearing would do
in a fire? The drivers are dressed in fully fire-resistant clothing, from head
to toe, including fire-resistant balaclava, underwear, socks, driving suit,
gloves and shoes. Even the helmet is lined with fire-resistant material.
You’re probably wearing a white shirt (what’s it made of?), a pair of
white cotton jeans, and maybe a fleece or polyester jacket. That fleece
jacket is going to MELT when exposed to flame, and poses a serious burn
hazard to the wearer. Natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, are less
likely to burn and are safer than synthetic fibers. Safest of all would be a
flame-resistant white suit for flagging. Thumper knows the guy who sells
them. They’re pricey ($120-$150) but, hey, you’re worth it! See Thumper
if you’re interested in getting one.
Besides being fun (and
warm), this was a very
helpful school. Reading
this article, you can see
how much we learned—a
lot more than just how to
set off a fire extinguisher.
Being trained in the
basics of how to extinguish car fires makes us more competent flaggers,
and makes the drivers safer if they should be involved in a car fire. You
don’t have to be a flagger to go to fire school—grid workers, pit workers,
stewards, tech inspectors, pretty much anyone with an interest in shooting
off a fire extinguisher and learning the basics of responding to a fire
emergency is welcome at school. Thanks Thumper for the time and energy
you put into making us better workers! See you next year, at the 2007
WANNA FLAG?
—continued from page 15
In closing, a few comments on the mechanics
of holding and displaying a flag. First of all,
when the flag is not being displayed it is kept
tucked under the corner worker’s arm to “hide”
it from the view of the drivers. The drivers should
only see a flag that is meant to be shown. To
display a “standing “flag it is important to show
as much of the colored surface of the flag to the
oncoming drivers. For this reason the staff (stick)
of the flag is usually held in the dominant hand
and the free edge of the cloth of the flag in the
non-dominant hand. With tension on the flag in
this manner, the full surface of the flag can be
displayed at right angles tto the oncoming race
traffic. This technique also prevents the wind
from waving the flag or changing the angle of
presentation to the drivers. A waved flag is best
held with one hand at the junction of the cloth
and shaft. This gives a better balance to the flag
and makes it easier to wave for long periods.
Remember to wave the flag BIG! Big motion
catches the driver’s eye and leaves no doubt
that you are displaying a waved flag. With the
yellow flagger waving the flag vigorously and
the other workers on the station motioning the
drivers to slow down or keep to one side of the
track, the message gets across. Remember at
the beginning of this article I said that the flags
are the only way we have of communicating
with the drivers. While true, we can also shout
with a flag or a fire bottle, depending on how
we show it.
It is of paramount importance that the
communication that we have with the drivers
is accurate and consistent. Everyone needs to
be flagging from the same set of rules. Those
rules, and any changes to them, such as for
a Pro event, will be discussed at the morning
flag meeting. If our flagging is accurate and
consistent, the flag will be obeyed; if not, they
will be ignored. Next time we will discuss
communication between corner workers and
Control.
