Solo Event One Summary
The 2006 Solo season started off pretty much the way the 2005 season
ended...WET. 80 brave souls made the trek to NHIS and turned times over
the Paul Zahornasky designed course. Everyone had a chance at 6 runs,
although quite a few folks elected to skip afternoon runs.
But wait—there’s lots of new event related stuff. First off, Jerry and Mike
Shields did a lot of work on the truck to help events run smoother...included
in the changes: a new side-view window so the timing scoring folks can see
the start line. The shelves in the truck were all rearranged so that the truck
can be loaded/unloaded more easily and the truck was re-painted which
was no small feat. Thanks go out to everyone the lent a hand on the project
including your Solo Chair Mark Goodale who spent hours stripping the old
paint off. Talk about going above and beyond!
We also started making announcements over the radio (95.1 FM) as soon
as the PA was set up, so folks could get a heads up on the day’s event and
listen to some tunes while mounting tires and walking the course. The first
tune: Back in the Saddle, of course. We hope to improve on this feature
and if you have any ideas for announcements (or even the tunes that we
play), please let us know. Don’t forget that we’re trying to have themes for
the events this year...
As stated, the weather was wet. It actually covered the whole range of
wet including sleet, light rain, heavier rain, overcast and then more rain.
For a moment, it looked like the first afternoon run group would get runs
on a drying course. However, fate intervened and a certain C Mod car
managed to dump nearly the entire contents of the engine sump on course
after a hose burst just off the start line. The entire course was oiled-down
and we then spent the next 45 minutes or so spreading more than 250
pounds of Speedi-Dri to soak up the mess. Of course the rain started again
as soon as the course was cleared. This led to some interesting runs as
everybody re-oriented to the course. As the afternoon progressed, the times
continued to drop.
Not surprisingly, the AWD Subies managed class wins in several classes.
Other class news: STS looks to be quite the class this year with a few
drivers renting rides from Fun Hondas and the Nate Whipple machine.
Josh Allen was top PAX in his WRX in STX. Next in line were Matt Colburn
(AS Subie), Brian Levesque (EP Honda), Chang Ho Kim (STX Honda) and
Michael Canny (AS Subie).
FTD was Tyson Sayer in his CM Reynard.
The next points event will be May 7th followed by points event three at
Devens. Next on the calendar after that is the Devens National Tour which
promises to be a better event than 2005’s edition. If you aren’t going to
compete in the Tour, make it a point to come by and watch some of the
action, you won’t be dissapointed. Better yet, get your entry fee in and be
part of the action.
