scam in Assam's North Cachar Hills district. Khan, a deputy director in the state social welfare department
and one of the 14 people accused by the CBI of conniving with militants in swindling development funds,
is in jail. The NIA was entrusted by the central government in June 2009 to investigate a criminal case
after the Assam Police arrested two Dima Halim Daogah (DHD-J) rebels in April with Rs.1 crore cash and
weapons. The rebels, Phojendra Hojai and Babul Kemprai, told police the cash was handed over to them
by Mohit Hojai, chief executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC). The
NIA, in its final chargesheet, said elected members of the NCHAC helped the outlawed Jewel Garlosa
faction of the DHD-J to siphon government funds. NIA, the new federal agency to combat terror, later
handed over the case to the central government for a CBI probe as government officials were involved in
criminal misconduct. 'We need a thorough and fair probe into the whole incident,' Munda said. (Central
Gowda asks BJP leaders to intervene in mining issue (5)
Bangalore, Jul 13 : Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (S) National President H D Deve Gowda today
urged the Central BJP leaders to intervene and advise Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to
order a CBI inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of iron ore in the State. Addressing newspersons here
today, Mr Gowda said Opposition parties, both the Congress and the JD(S) in Karnataka, had resorted to
dharna which resulted in disrupting both the Houses of the Legislature on the issue of illegal mining and
CBI probe ''into plundering of state wealth allegedly by Ministers.'' He said the BJP, which was also the
main Opposition Party in the Lok Sabha, would lose moral authority to raise voice against any kind of
corruption if it failed to prevail upon its Chief Minister in Karnataka into ordering a CBI probe into illegal
mining which had resulted in a revenue loss of over Rs 12,000 crore. Reminding the BJP leaders,
including Mr L K Advani, how they had intervened and resolved the issue of serious dissident activities in
the State unit last year, Mr Gowda wondered about the ''silence of both Mr Advani and Opposition leader
in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on the ongoing agitation of Opposition parties in Karnataka.'' (Express
Bombay High Court reserves order on Lalit Modi's petition (5)
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court will Thursday pass the order on the petition filed by suspended IPL
Chairman Lalit Modi challenging the disciplinary proceedings initiated against him by the BCCI. Modi's
lawyer Virag Tulzhapurkar told the court on Wednesday that his client can't expect "impartial and honest"
decision from disciplinary committee which will conduct enquiry against him. The committee is going to
meet on July 16 and has summoned Modi to appear. But Modi has sought an independent "outside" body
for conducting inquiry instead of the present disciplinary panel of Arun Jaitley, Jyotiraditya Scindia and
Chirayu Amin, IPL's interim Chairman. "Decision of this committee is a foregone conclusion," said
Tulzhapurkar. He alleged that actions of BCCI secretary N Srinivasan "were actuated by bias against
Modi", as the latter had made allegations against Srinivasan regarding having a stake in IPL franchise
team Chennai Super Kings. Similarly, Amin, a member of the committee and acting Chairman of IPL, too
had a personal bias against Modi, said advocate Tulzhapurkar. Even Jaitley should not be on the panel
because he, along with Amin, was part of the IPL's governing council which "ratified" Srinivasan's opinion
that there was prima facie evidence to initiate disciplinary inquiry against Modi, he said. Its impossible to
expect honest and impartial decision from the committee," Modi's lawyer said. He also pointed out -- to
emphasise that the BCCI has already made its mind in Modi's case -- that it scrapped the telecast rights'
contract with Mauritius-based World Sport Group (WSG). One of the allegations against Modi is that the
tender process for the contract was questionable, he said. Facilitation fee of $80 million (Rs 425 crore)
