Ron Palmer dies after short illness
Another of Walpole’s originals, Ron Palmer, died on
May 16th after a short illness.
Ron was one of five Palmer children who were born and
grew up in the early days of Walpole.
Their parents were among the families brought here in
the Walpole Land Settlement Scheme in 1931 and they
had a farm just north of the town site.
Ron’s siblings were sisters June and Betty and brothers
Jimmy and Tommy. June and Jimmy have died and now
only Betty (now Graham) and Tommy, are still alive.
Ron was born at the old Nornalup Hospital on January
26 th 1937 and went to the Walpole Number 1 School.
He told a story of a time in his teens when he went to
Perth and worked for a circus, dreaming of travelling
with it round the world. The dream ended when police
came to the circus after some thefts had taken place and
told the young man he’d be better off moving somewhere
else away from the gang of criminals he was
unknowingly mixing with.
Fortunately his sister Betty was living in Perth, so Ron
had somewhere to go and later he worked for a time on a
farm in the wheatbelt.
Back in Walpole he took a fancy to Gwenda Underhill,
but she didn’t return the interest and Ron turned his
attention instead to her twin sister Betty. They had
known each other for years and Betty recalls a time when
Ron threw her rubber boots in a creek and offered to give
her a dink on his bike. She quickly told him where to get
off.
Later when she was working at Tinglewood Lodge, he
pestered her with phone calls and she finally allowed
him to come and visit her there – provided he brought
her a packet of cigarettes.
The relationship blossomed and they were engaged for
three years before they married at the Church of England
church in Walpole in July 1958. They leased a block
from Les Chatley and saved for three years to buy it,
living there for 19 years and having five children:
Dianne, Karen, Leonie, Graham and Rose.
For some years they ran dairy cows and then beef cattle.
GOLDEN WATTLE CAFÉ
Please be advised that owning to the
funeral of our dear Uncle Ron
Palmer, the Golden Wattle Café will
be closed from 3 pm Saturday 26th
May, 2007. The service station will
remain open 7 am to 6pm.
Ron also worked for a firm of log hauling contractors at
the local mill. For a while he drove his own truck for
them, then worked on a bulldozer loading trucks, which
included his own with someone else paid to drive it. For
a time he did an extra shift as night watchman.
The family were all keen on boating and fishing, even
though Betty and some of the children couldn’t swim. In
the early days they had a strange little boat which
needed a magneto to start its “putt putt” engine. It also
leaked and the children had to bail it out at the start of
every trip. Everyone else was out on the water and
started fishing by the time the Palmers got there. Later
they graduated to bigger and better boats.
Ron and Betty retired in the 90s and moved to a house in
Walpole Street. They both played golf for many years
but became keen caravaners, travelling all round
Australia and spending three months each year at
Carnarvon.
Six months ago, to his surprise, Ron was diagnosed
with lung cancer after being examined for a cough he
had developed.
He was never really sick and died peacefully, having had
a good night’s sleep the night before.
He was grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of 11.
RON PALMER
Passed away peacefully on the
16th May 2007. A celebration of
his life will be held on the 26th of
May at 11 am at the Tree Top
Motel followed by a private,
invitation-only internment.
Claudia Simpson conducts the first class in
Spanish for a large group of interested local
students
Telecentre and TAFE
break new ground …
In a first for Walpole, a face-to-face class in Spanish was
given at the Telecentre last week.
The course is a profile TAFE module, and it is the first
time any language course has been conducted “live” in
Walpole.
The participants have been eagerly awaiting the start.
Many people in the district have visited Spain, some on
several occasions, and some having relatives living there.
There was strong interest when the possibility of
learning the language was first suggested.
Not only does local resident and lecturer Claudia
Simpson, of Bow Bridge, originate from South
America and naturally possess a good working
knowledge of Spanish, she is also highly qualified to
teach several languages.
So if friends and neighbours start saying Buenos Dias
instead of “G’day”, Si Si instead of “Yeah” or “amigo
mio” instead of “Mate”, you’ll know who to blame.
The course will run 17 weeks. There are still vacancies
for one or two people and anyone joining this week
should have no trouble in catching up.
Concern over car park
run-off
Gilbert Stokman took this photograph
during his visit
Fisheries Department Volunteer and Education Activities
Co-ordinator Gilbert Stokman believes something should be
done about the orange silt that is washed into the Walpole Inlet
from the car park at the boat ramp.
Bunbury-based Gilbert saw the run-off when he was in
Walpole recently to conduct a fishing clinic.
He said the silt is covering marine organisms on the floor of the
inlet and local people should be getting onto the DEC, the
Shire and other authorities to do something about it.
and fish confusion
Gilbert is also concerned that some people cannot identify the
fish they catch.
“There are number of fish species that look very like each
other, but have quite different daily bag limits and minimum
sizes,” he said. “Unfortunately for young Australian salmon,
they bear a close resemblance to adult Australian herring.
While herring mature at about 19 to 21cm in length, salmon
don’t reach maturity until they reach 54cm.
“My advice is to grab a copy of the Department of Fisheries
species ID guide for the region in which you fish. There are
five parts of juvenile Australian salmon and herring that can be
used as a checklist for knowing which you have caught.”
“A young salmon has a pointed nose, a relatively small eye,
smooth scales, a yellow pectoral fin and no black tips on its
tailfin. In contrast, a grown-up herring has a rounded nose, a
relatively large eye, rough scales, a transparent pectoral fin and
black tips on its tailfin.
“ It is also possible to mistake juvenile undersized pink
snapper for adult black bream. Although adult snapper look
nothing like black bream, adult black bream look disturbingly
like young pink snapper to some fishers. “
How wrong
(but right)
they were
In the absence of Techpet, some local IT addicts
have been satisfying their desire for technological
trivia by scouring obscure sources like back issues
of Popular Mechanics magazine.
Their attention was naturally caught by this picture
in a 1954 issue which proclaimed this was what a
home computer would look like in 2004!
Scientists from the RAND Corporation had put
together this model to illustrate their view of what
the future was going to bring.
The article confessed that the needed technology for
such a wonderful machine would probably not be
economically feasible for the average home.
Also, the scientists admitted that their future
computer would require technology that had not
then been invented.
“But, 50 years from now scientific progress is
expected to solve these problems,” they predicted.
They got that bit right, anyway.
From Nelia’s Desk ….
A regular series of informative notes in relation
to responsible home ownership and buying and
selling real estate.
Getting The O.K. Before You
Buy
It's only natural that home buyers want to save
money on the costs associated with their property
purchase.
They shop around for legal/conveyancing deals,
removalists and so on.
Sometimes, especially on newer properties, they
decide that the recommended pest and building
reports are an unnecessary expense.
Purchasers should never take anything for granted
even on relatively new houses.
Most real estate agents have a story or two of
purchasers that were wiser after the event. The fact
that a house is new doesn't mean that a purchaser
should bypass the pest report. White ants can enter
even a new home if a tradesman has been careless.
They have been known to enter via formwork that
has been left around concrete steps, for example.
Reports that cost a few hundred dollars could save
thousands even tens of thousands of dollars if the
damage turns out to be extensive.
Home buyers should make sure they use licensed
tradespeople that have professional indemnity
insurance.
There should be no question of the buyer being out
of pocket as long as the tradesperson is covered if
they fail to analyse building faults that later become
apparent.
If your building and pest report does uncover
problems that doesn't automatically mean you should
pull out of the sale.
One way to approach the issue is to re-negotiate the
sale price to allow for repairs.
Prudent vendors usually see the wisdom of making
adjustments to retain their purchaser.
Sometimes vendors prefer to arrange for a tradesman
to carry out the work before settlement takes place.
Even a termite infestation doesn't necessarily mean a
purchaser should pull out of the sale.
A surprising number of homes have had termites at
some stage. It's a case of quantifying the damage and
taking a calculated risk. However, in the case of
serious structural damage which is often
unquantifiable it is usually safer to give up the idea of
purchase no matter how much you like the property.
The ultimate choice is up to the purchaser.
Building and pest reports are a tool for assessing the
property's structural condition and ultimate suitability.
In most cases they enable purchasers to reinforce the
feeling that they have made the right choice.
Experience and local knowledge mean everything
Association
visits site
of sky jetty
In conjunction with its 20 th Anniversary celebrations
the weekend before last, the Walpole Nornalup
National Park Association organized a trip to Little
Mt Frankland where DEC is building a walkway.
When completed, this will lead on to a sky jetty
which will overlook a deep valley leading away up
to the north east to the Soho Hills, taking in a
magnificent vista. It is part of an interpretive centre
to be built at Mt Frankland.
Newly elected President Colin Steele said about 20
members attended and all were equally surprised at
the beauty of the surrounding area from this vantage
point. After many photos were taken, they walked to
the boardwalk leading to the track around the base of
Mt. Frankland and followed this route back to the
car park, enjoying the ruggedness of the area.
“It never loses it’s beauty, no matter how many
times you walk this trail,” Colin said. “Many thanks
to Chris Goodsell, for guiding us in a semi-official
capacity, around the site.
“We then made our way back, some via the
Swarbrick Discovery Centre which made for some
entertaining discussions at the dinner in the evening!
“On the Sunday morning, Rainbow Lady, along with
Gary Muir, Ross and Leah, took us around the
Walpole/ Nornalup Inlet systems and out to the
entrance to the Southern Ocean. With Dr Anne
Brearley on board to give us her thoughts on the
ecology of the inlet systems we arrived at the jetty,
where the group then made the 3km return walk
across to Shelley Beach, returning with samples of
sea shells, grasses and sea grasses. After a
magnificent lunch on the jetty, we returned, with Dr
Brearley explaining the collected items. The trip was
an end to a perfect weekend.”
As President of the Association, Colin said: “I am
neither scientist, nor naturalist, more someone with
a “little” knowledge on lots of things concerning our
area. I feel the Association is here to bring
awareness of the wonderful forests and systems we
have, and to get people to appreciate what we have
around us and see how important it is to protect and
enjoy the area. With a very good working
relationship with DEC, this allows us to provide a
focus on the Park’s interest.”
Part of the panoramic view from where the
Sky Jetty will be at Little Mt Frankland.
Giants in winning form,
but at a high cost
Denmark Walpole Giants are continuing their much
improved season, but are starting to pay a price in
injuries to a number of players.
This weekend they put together a score of 18.18 to
trounce Kojonup with 4.4.
Best players were Matt Warburton, Cord
Brunning, Reece Sinagra, Brodie Hickey, Darren
Mumford and Josh Venhatachalam.
Local lad Shaun Sims played a good game midfield,
Chad Stewart had a quiet game by his standards and
Warren Hawkins pulled a hammy in the early stages
and could sadly play no further part in the game.
Mick Dempster played very well until he received a
heavy knock early in the second half and also sat
the rest of the game out.
Will Neil continues to push for a league berth
playing good football in the reserves and the club is
hopeful of having injured local trio Graham
Hawkins, Damien Burton and Andrew Dempster
back playing in the next couple of weeks.
This Saturday (May 26th) the Giants travel to Mt
Barker for a rematch with the Barker Bulls.
WALPOLE SHIRE SCENE – May 2007
POWER ISSUES
Following up on last month’s report on Council’s concerns with Walpole’s power failures, Wade De Campo (Shire
President) and Jeremy Hubble (Director of Statutory Services) will join Ward Councillor Dave Tapley at a meeting with
Western Power delegates and other stakeholders at the Denmark Shire Council’s officers to discuss the situation on
Tuesday 22 nd May. The meeting has been coordinated by the Great Southern Development Commission.
Western Power representatives will include: Mark De Later (Asset Manager), Syd McDowell (Network Performance
Manager), Miriam Borthwick (Media representative) and AnnaLise Doesburk (Stakeholders Relations Officer).
Cr Tapley stated that he hoped that the meeting would mean an end to the costly disruptions to Walpole’s power supply.
REHABILITATION PROGRAM
A grant of $6,560 from Coast West will allow the Shire to rehabilitate the Walpole Foreshore area from Swarbick Jetty
running parallel along Walpole Street approximately 500 metres. The natural foreshore line has been severely impacted
on over the years by invasive species and little attempt has been made to preserve the natural ecosystem. If this
encroachment is not managed, the natural ecosystem along the foreshore will be lost.
Council is expected to approve the rehabilitation project at its Council Meeting on Thursday 24 th May. Some
preparation works, such as spraying, have been undertaken by the Parks Service team over the past two years as part of
the normal Walpole Works programme at a cost of approximately $4,250.
Provenance planting is a high priority of the grant and species survival, and all plants will be sourced from a local
wildflower nursery. Labour required to advance the project has been volunteered by the Walpole Prison Camp and
community (estimated at $ 4,655). All decision making has been undertaken in consultation with community members,
and the South West Catchment Council has already contributed $1,000.
COUNCIL MEETINGS
Ordinary meetings of Council will be held on Thursday 14 th & 28 th June commencing at 5.30pm. All members of the
community are welcome to attend. Agendas and Council Minutes are available for public viewing at our Customer
Service Centre, Public Libraries or on Council’s website.
SOUTHERN FORESTS MAP & GUIDE
In 2006, Council’s Southern Forests Tourism Advisory Committee proposed to produce a comprehensive Map & Guide
for exclusive use by the Visitor Centres. SFTAC members include the four Visitor Centres and a representative of the
Department of Environment and Conservation. After input by the Visitor Centres, Shire and DEC, the final draft of the
Map & Guide was presented to the SFTAC at its recent meeting in Pemberton.
Cr Tapley and Don Redman, President of the Walpole Visitors Centre, expressed their satisfaction with the detail of the
regional map, which covers the entire Shire of Manjimup, and the town maps of Walpole, Pemberton, Northcliffe and
Manjimup.
“The printer’s proof of the A2, double-sided map, is colourful and easy to read,” Cr Tapley said. “It is uncluttered by
any commercial advertising, and will allow the Visitor Centre to easily direct tourists to tourist attractions and their
destinations.”
The Southern Forests Map & Guide highlights “Things to Do”, shows National Parks and Nature Reserves, and lists
regional events. Its main purpose is to encourage visitors to stay longer in the district by being made aware of activities
available. The final version is expected to go to print in June.
