The dolphin thatsaid ‘thank you’LAST week we reportedon a stranded dolphin inthe Nornalup Inlet (“DECto the rescue of strandeddolphin”).Local tradesman SteveLarkman was the personwho first spotted thedolphin and alerted DEC.Steve told the WalpoleWeekly: “The dolphin isone of a pod that iscommonly found at thebar. It was only strandedfor half an hour at themost.“I figured it was best tocall for professional help, rather than try to help it onmy own and cause theanimal a greater deal ofstress.“It was a greatexperience for me to comeso close to such a beautifulanimal, and you are rightin the fact that we will allbe keeping our eye out forthings like this.“The dolphins werechasing fish in theshallows, which they doquite regularly.“As the tide was on theway out, the shallow watercan become a lot shallowerquite quickly, just in acouple of waves.“When we helped theanimal, we found one of itsfins had got stuck in thesand.“It was amazing to hearthe dolphin make a noise, like saying ‘thank you’, asit swam to deeper water.”Steve Larkman’s picture of the stranded dolphin. That does not include over600,000 people (more thana quarter of them children),who will die from exposureto second-hand smoke.MAY 31World No Tobacco DayThis year, more than 5million people will diefrom a tobacco-relatedheart attack, stroke, cancer or lung disease. So why not Quit today?Come and see us at Silver Chainfor more information, ring the Quitline on 13 78 48(13 QUIT) or visitwww.quitbecauseyoucan.org.auCHECK OUT THE MAYCALENDAR OF EVENTS AT:www.walpole.org.au/WalpoleRecCentreNEW! What lies beneath?I think I've got one: Edith Cowan University students splashing about for science in the marine park.STUDENTS from Edith CowanUniversity recently undertookresearch on bivalves in the Walpoleand Nornalup Inlets Marine Park incollaboration with the Department ofEnvironment and Conservation.Benthic (sea bottom) invertebratesmay be filter feeders, grazers oractive predators, and are importantconsumers of organic material thatgrows in or is transported into theinlets. Similarly, they form the dietsof numerous larger species, such asfishes and birds. The work was part of the third-yearcourse requirements of theiruniversity degree. Lecturers arehoping to return to the marine parkeach year with their third-yearstudents to repeat the research. The research will lead to a greaterunderstanding of the diversity, distribution, ecology and biology ofbivalve species in the marine park. The information collected will beused along with data collected byDEC to design a long-termmonitoring program for bivalves andother benthic invertebrates. The students found that bivalveabundance and diversity increasedtoward the mouth of the NornalupInlet and that sediment particle sizeappears to have a strong influence onthe type and number of bivalvespresent in an area.More invertebrate species inhabitthe Walpole and Nornalup inletscompared with most other estuariesof south-west Western Australiabecause the entrance is permanentlyopen, and marine-like conditionsprevail for much of the year.Within the system, a greaterdiversity of invertebrates occurs inthe Nornalup Inlet compared with theWalpole Inlet, with a greater diversityon sand-flats compared with deepermuddy-basin habitats. The fauna ofthe tidal rivers is less wellunderstood.Concerns exist about the currentrarity of some previously abundantbivalve species, such as the cockleand oyster, although it is unknown ifthis is primarily the result of naturalor human-induced processes or both. While this cockle species iscollected for bait in the inlets, populations at Albany have, forexample, exhibited big changes inabundance between 1978 and 1999that may have resulted fromvariations in the recruitment ofpelagic early life stages. This example highlights the needfor greater knowledge of the ecologyand biology of invertebrate species inthe marine park.Walpole Weekly May 25, 2011 — 9

Pertussis /Whooping coughWhy the big fuss about whooping cough, you might ask?As you can see by the chart below in WA whooping cough has been on the rise since 2008.This is partly because vaccination against whooping cough does not give lifelong protection and partlybecause immunization rates in general are dropping.Pertussis notifications in WA from 2008 to 2010 by quarterWhat is pertussis?Whooping cough is a disease caused by the bacterium (Bordatella pertussis) that can affect people of allages but is most serious in young babies and unimmunized toddlers less than 2 years old. Althoughdeaths are rare, there is an average of at least one whooping cough death recorded in Australia eachyear. What are the symptoms?• It usually begins like a cold with a runny nose, tiredness and mild fever.• Coughing develops in bouts followed by a deep gasp or “whoop”.• Small children can go blue or stop breathing.• Older children and adults tend to have a less serious illness but can still have bouts of coughing.Whooping cough is also known as the 100-day cough because the cough can last up to 100 daysdespite treatment. How is it spread? It is spread by droplets from people coughing or sneezing who have the disease. An untreated person canspread the disease for at least 3 weeks from the onset of the cough.(This is why newborn babies are particularly vulnerable as they don’t have their first vaccination until 8weeks of age and then need 2 to 3 vaccinations before they are protected.)How is it prevented?People with coughing illnesses should avoid contact with babies.Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of whooping cough.Whooping cough vaccinations are available free for children under the childhood immunizationschedule and recently the vaccine has been made available for parents, grandparents and otherhousehold carers of children less than 6 months old.If you are a new parent, grandparent or carer of a new baby then contact the Silver Chain centre toenquire about a whooping cough vaccine.Helen Rawlins, Remote Area Nurse.
