Me No Hairraises morethan $6000 forcancer researchMore than $6,000 was raised in Walpole’s “MeNo Hair” head shaving event at the Hotel onFriday night. After a week’s delay due to the storm, a bigcrowd turned out for the event.Fourteen brave souls submitted to having theirheads shaved - 13 on the night and one athome - and many more — mostly children — hadtheir crowning glories sprayed in a variety ofbright flouro colours. Most of the shavees went the whole hog butAlicia Johnson preferred a MohawkThe Hotel put up $50 for every head shaved, andPeter Bidwell offered another $30, then foundhimself placed firmly on the spot when ananonymous donor offered $1000 if Peter andbrother in law Alan Johnson had their headsshaved.Jo Lane and Alison Ebbett did the shaving to musicprovided by Chloe and Ross.Everyone agreed it was a fantastic night andthere were whoops of jubilation as the locks ofhair fell to the floor and the total of donationsrose higher and higher. One of the organizers, as well as one of thesubjects, Alicia Johnson said the final total wouldnot be known until all the pledged money camein, probably early next week.“It was a fantastic response,” Alicia said.Susan Morley, also an organizer and new baldy, after having had her hair died purple for the pastcouple of weeks, is reported to be planningpublic appearances to raise more funds. Both Alicia and Susan have experience of cancerin their family. In Alicia’s case it is her mother, Gloria, who wasthe inspiration for many of the others with herhairless look.In fact it was almost a Johnson family affair withGloria’s husband Alan, father Tommy Palmer, sister Marlene Bidwell and brother in law PeterBidwell all in the line up for the electric clippers. It was funny how much Tommy’s daughters andgranddaughter looked even more like him withtheir hair off.Deepest sympathyto Kaye and family onthe sad loss of Ivan,a true gentleman. Our thoughts are withyou. All volunteers atSt John AmbulanceWalpole NornalupSub CentreWalpole Country Clubinvites you to anItalian NightSaturday 9th AugustGood food, wine and musicWatch this space for moreinformationWalpole Weekly July 23 2008 — 2
