Drilling to start soon forshort-term water suppliesThe Water Corporation will begin drilling next month to look for ground water supplies closeto Walpole airstrip. This is needed to provide a short-term solution to the region’s water supply problems whileinvestigative work starts early in the new year to examine long-term options.Regional Business Manager Chris Elliott said significant growth and climate uncertainty wereplacing pressure on Walpole’s existing water supply scheme and a sustainable long termsolution was needed.“The investigative work will comprise hydrogeological studies, water sampling and test boredrilling, to help identify some broad conceptual options for further detailed consideration,” hesaid. “As preliminary investigations are undertaken, we will be working closely with the Walpolecommunity and other stakeholders to develop feasible planning options for the town’sfuture water needs. Community input will be sought at each stage of the project and will play akey role in determining the best way forward.“We expect preliminary investigations on the long term options to be undertaken in the next 12to 18 months, which will include opportunities for community involvement.”Because implementation of a long term solution is likely to take a number of years, the WaterCorporation is also investigating supplementing existing water sources for the short term. The drilling rig will be brought in to look for potential short term groundwater supplies in landnear the airstrip which has been selected so as to minimise impact on private land or highconservation areas.Chris Elliott said the town’s drinking water storage levels were low for this time of year, andurged Walpole residents to conserve as much water as possible during summer.“Based on previous years’ trends, Walpole’s water consumption is expected to double incoming weeks due to the annual influx of tourists to the area,” he said. “We will be workingwith the local hospitality industry to minimise impact on the water scheme, but residents canmake an equally significant contribution by reducing water use around the home.”Tree-Elle RetreatMASSAGEWhy not treatyourself to aTherapeuticMassage & SpaAt the new facilityavailable atTREE-ELLERETREATCall Barbara tomake an appointment.9840 8471Policy on publicationThe Management Committee of the Walpole CommunityResource Telecentre (Inc), proprietor of the Walpole Weekly, isresponsible for the production of the Weekly for the purpose ofinforming the general public of all that’s happening in ourcommunity and as a vehicle for advertising local services andairing legitimate community issues. However, we reserve the right to refuse to print any materialthat could lead us into litigation, is derogatory to any personor group, or could further inflame any existing disharmonybetween community members. Redman congratulatesWalpole and Denmark onTidy Town success.Stirling MLA Terry Redman has congratulated both theWalpole and Denmark Tidy Town committees on theircontinuing commitment to ensuring that their towns remainclean, green and beautiful places to live and to visit.“The naming of the two towns as regional winners for thesouth west and great southern respectively, in the 2006 TidyTown awards is richly deserved, and is just reward for allthose whose hard work has contributed to their area’s visualand environmental appeal.” Terry said.“Anyone who lives along this stretch of southern coast, knows how unique its attributes are, and that pride of place isreflected in the community support that gets behind the TidyTown Committees.“The Tidy Town awards are based on more than simply atown’s cleanliness and appeal, and it was clearly thecommitment to environment, evident in Walpole’s andDenmark’s presentations, that made the difference when thewinners were decided.“We can certainly take pride in the example that these twocommunities have been setting for many years in theirdedication to natural heritage preservation.“It is very pleasing to see the committee’s and thecommunity’s hard work in so many areas including wastemanagement, coastline and waterways preservation, revegetation and sustainability, recognised by the KeepAustralia Beautiful Council.” Terry said.Trevor Burslem, Manager of the Valley of the Giants Tree TopWalk (DEC – Frankland District), passed awayafter illness two weeks ago.Trevor had been with theDepartment for six years and waswidely known and respectedwithin the Department and thetourism industry.Originally from Perth, he hadpreviously managed the Tree TopWalk in Lamington NationalPark in Queensland. He will be missed by both hiswork colleagues and the WalpolecommunityWalpole Weekly December 29th 2006 — 6

Dear Editor: Theforest doesn’tneed thisWhen Christmas and New Year are over and thedecorations come down, I hope the same applies tothe decorations in the Swarbrick Forest Block. If ever there was desecration, hideous violationand disgusting taste put upon such a magnificentstand of forest, that is what has been done.Fake; plastic; bird and animal barrier; all at oddswith such a lovely, uplifting place.I hope Premier Carpenter will come south and say/shout “It’s Got To Go”.What makes us think the forest needs dressing up?It stands alone - majestic.Marion Hunt, AlbanyEDITOR : A number of people have expressedsimilar negative reactions to the artworks, forestmirror, and walkway at the Swarbrick site of theWalpole Wilderness Discovery Centre. If you have views one way or the other, write to usabout them and we will try to assess what thecommunity thinks as a whole.EC 5106Walpole &SurroundingDistrictsFor prompt and quality workmanshipon all types of electrical installations.Richard & Sarah WilliamsPhone/fax 9840 1243Mobile 0429 442 252The AnnualGF 009493 PL 6825Ian MathesonGENERAL MAINTENANCEINCLUDING EMERGENCIES*** Sewer conversions & Renovations ****** Blocked drains *** Burst pipes ****** Hot water system installation and servicing ***FREE QUOTESMob. Memories for a lifetimeBy Amanda FlettSeptember 9th 2006 was the beginning to the mostextraordinary week that I have experienced to date, and quitepossibly will in my entire life. With four other students from Albany Senior High school Iwas privileged to extend my studies in the workings ofinternational economics by travelling to Hong Kong. While there we were given the opportunity toexperience the World Economic Forum for Investors hostedby the CLSA Bank. Over 1,100 investors from thirtycountries and 550 CEO/CFO's attended this eventrepresenting 200 of the region’s best companies. It is an invitation-only event which truly illustrates howincredible this experience was, and how grateful to Mr LaurieYoung I am. Mr Young, a former student at ASHS, now theHuman Resource Manager for CLSA, sponsored fivestudents from the school: Rhys Hening, Amy Hetherington,Kathleen Robbins, and former Walpole students MatthewParker and myself, and extended the invitation to ourEconomics teacher Mr Ray Lucas, Gemma Hitchcock andparent Mrs Leanne Hitchcock. For us 'humble country folk', describing this trip as an'eye-opener' would be an understatement. Not only were weable to learn about a completely different culture, we werealso able to experience the workings of the bank and attendguest speaker presentations at the forum which includedkeynote speakers: Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Allan Greenspan.I found the most impressive to be Al Gore. Not onlywere we able to see him in action at the forum as he gave hispresentation on Global Warming, but we were also able toattend the showing of his film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.During the day, when we were not at the forum, we were atthe CLSA bank. Each student was partnered with astockbroker on the Trading floor who acted as a mentorinforming us of what their work involved, how to operateBloomberg for Indices; the program that they used toresearch the companies, and allowing us to observe millionsof dollars worth of shares being traded. We witnessed the stockbrokers operating up to sixcomputer screens at once as they completed their tradingactivities. It was an inspiration to watch them in action andlater we were given a tutorial of how to operate the amazingsoftware on the Bloomberg premises. This new knowledge was put to good use as when wereturned to the bank we were presented with two case studieswhich involved us working in small groups to research twocompanies. We had to decide on a position we, as“knowledgeable stockbrokers", would hold on thesecompanies. I can proudly say that we had positive feed backon both case studies and were told that our positions weresupported. Most afternoons after our ‘hard day’s work’ were spent doingwhat we all did best: shopping. And most of the nights?Wining and dining again at the expense of Mr Young. Heintroduced us to some exclusive restaurants in Hong Kong, where even the bathrooms emerged as a topic ofconversation. At one restaurant the Ladies room shone inblack marble with assistants standing by to wipe your hands, and the Men’s room was complete with one of the greatestviews of Hong Kong, with one-way glass of course. The Albany SHS group that travelled to Hong Kong:Matthew Parker, Kathleen Robbins, Amy Hetherington,Amanda Flett, Ray Lucas, Gemma Hitchcock andRhys Hening. My favourite night in Hong Kong would have to beattending the CLSA Investors' Forum Gala Party'Notorious'. This included entertainment from some ofHong Kong’s most talented dancers and break dancersand culminated with a concert by Duran Duran. The Sacred TreeIs open in DenmarkFor all your Inspirational Giftsfrom Worldwide cultures.Includes Jewellery, Angelic,Native American, Fairy & Unicorn,Native berry moisturisers,Crystals and Pendulums, Singing Bowls,Gongs, Colourful silk brocade tablerunners, Posters, Books, C.D’s, EssentialOils,Belly Dancing Accessories.Readings and Aura Photographsavailable by appointment.See us on the corner of StricklandStreet and South Coast Highway inthe Denmark BudgetAccommodationPhone 9848 3360 orA/H 9848 1487Walpole Weekly December 29th 2006 — 9

Tech Pet…Want an easy method of showing your friends your digitalphotographs without the hassles of sending them by email? Then do as I have done and upload and store them on theInternet using flickr. You can then let your friends have theURL (address) and they can then browse them at their leisure,or indeed run them as a slide show. The service is free (wouldI use it otherwise?) and initially you are given an allowance of20 megabytes per month; mine has just been raised to a 100megabytes so I must be doing something right. A fee is onlypayable if you want to upload an unlimited number ofphotographs, but one can squeeze a hell of a lot of picturesinto 20 MB.If you want to use the freebie you have to have a Yahooidentity before you can sign up for flickr, but this is easilyobtained from Yahoo.com and then you can start uploadingimmediately. If you want to have a preview, take a look at mymodest efforts so far by copying and pasting the followingURL into your Internet Browser.http://tinyurl.com/y9cjpmThis is one worthwhile program and one can spend hourslooking at what others have uploaded, most in the publicdomain, ie no copyright. For instance if you do a search onWalpole, flickr will come up with some 2080 photos althoughgranted, not all are of Walpole WA.Last time I checked there was something like 33 millionphotos in the data base. Classified as Endangered, thepopulation size of Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo has declined by at least50% in the last half century; largely due to clearing of extensive areas of theirbreeding and feeding habitat.Although seen frequently, the population is an aged one and with the loss ofbreeding habitat they are producing fewer chicks. When this generation dies outthe population will decrease even further. The birds have a very strong social structure and mate for life, living for up to50 years. They mainly nest in Eucalyptus tree hollows including Salmon Gum,Tuart and Marri and typically feed on the seeds of proteaceous plants such asBanksia, Hakea, Dryandra and Grevillea. The first stage of the project will focus on the nesting areas of the birds.Anyone who has had Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos visiting their propertybetween June and December and/or would like to be involved in theRecovery Project, is being asked to contact the Birds Australia, and help us in the conservation of these special birds.Funding is available for landholders wishing to help protect Carnaby’sCockatoo habitat on their land. For more information or to report nesting areas, contact Raana Scott, SouthCoast Recovery Project Officer on 08) 98420011 or emailr.scott@birdsaustralia.com.auMERV’S CONCRETE SUPPLIESPRE-MIX CONCRETESAND & GRAVEL CARTINGSITE WORKS - HOUSE & SHED PADS – DRIVEWAYSLOADER HIRE & GRADER HIREBLUE METAL & METAL DUST AVAILABLEContact MERV Ph/Fax 9840 1130Mobile 042 8 401 130A Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo- one of two white-tailedblack cockatoo species inthis area.
