THE<br />

Seminary of the Hurons that we maintain<br />

here has this year been extraordinarily fortunate,<br />

and, humanly speaking, extraordinarily<br />

unfortunate. In truth, it has been extraordinarily<br />

fortunate, because it has consisted of six excellent<br />

Neophytes, — some of whom have perfected themselves<br />

to a wonderful degree in the Faith, which they had<br />

already embraced while the others<br />

have received it<br />

with very good disposition, and all have given and<br />

have received the utmost satisfaction during the<br />

whole time that they remained with us.<br />

On the other hand, it has been extraordinarily unfortunate,<br />

because [144] these poor Christians on leaving<br />

our hands fell into those of the Iroquois, to serve<br />

as a prey for the flames, and for their stomachs hungering<br />

after the flesh and blood of all these peoples<br />

who hear us. I have said that this Seminary had<br />

been in this respect extraordinarily unfortunate,<br />

humanly speaking for we must adore all the designs<br />

of divine Providence, and trust that he will derive his<br />

own glory and the good of these peoples from the<br />

unusual afflictions with which he smites them. Perhaps<br />

the accident that has happened to these<br />

persons is but an imaginary misfortune in our minds,
