Honors and Ceremonies/Administrative Notes:<br />

1. Table 5 of U.S. Navy Regulations lists officials who rate specific honors and ceremonies<br />

associated with formal visits. Only officials listed in Table 5 rate honors and ceremonies. For<br />

those officials listed in Table 5 conducting an informal visit aboard ship, the administrative<br />

announcements listed in Chapter 12 of NTP 13 are appropriate.<br />

2. There are occasions when it is appropriate to announce the arrival of other high-ranking<br />

officials – flag rank equivalents – not listed in Table 5, abcmrd Navy ships. Typically these are<br />

high-ranking officials within the Department of Defense, the Secretary of the Navy’s staff or<br />

other high-ranking officials at the senior executive service (SES) level. Examples include<br />

Deputy Assistant Secretaries of Defense (3 Star equivalents) and Deputy Assistant Secretaries of<br />

the Navy (2 Star equivalents). If deemed appropriate by the commanding officer or senior<br />

officer present, an administrative announcement of the ofli.cial’s arrival consisting of the<br />

appropriate number of bells followed by hislher plain language official position may be used.<br />

The following examples are provided:<br />

For a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense:<br />

8 bells.. .Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, arriving!<br />

For a Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy:<br />

6 bells.. .Deputy Assistant Secretary of the “Navy, arriving!<br />

These officials do not rate any honors such as gun salutes, side boys, etc.<br />
