Page 4 PATRIOT BULLETIN NEW MEMBERS We have thirteen new members to announce that have been added to the rolls since the last issue of PATRIOT BULLETIN, and that means Chapter 1919 closes out the Fiscal Year with the best recruiting year we have seen in recent memory. Congratulations and welcome to: Wayland T. Allen is an Army Iraq veteran, wounded September 24, 2007 when assigned to 1-12 Cav, 1st Cavalry Division. Adones P. Flores is an Army Afghanistan veteran who was in Co C, 3-71 Cavalry, 10th Mountain Division, wounded June 20, 2006 during operations from Bagram with Task Force Spartan. Lonnie Garza is an Army Vietnam veteran. Lonnie joined by Member Transfer and unit information is not available. Junior L. Greene is an Army Iraq veteran, wounded October 17, 2006 when assigned to Company E, 1-66 Armor, 1st Brigade, 4th Inf Div. Angel M. Herrera is an Army Afghanistan veteran wounded September 23, 2008 when assigned to Task Force Castle at Bagram Airfield. Sean M. Humble is an Army Iraq veteran, wounded January 22, 2004 near Al Taji when serving in 2-20 FA, 4th Infantry Division. John H. Mackey is an Army Vietnam veteran, wounded in 1968 when assigned to 1-52 Inf, 198th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. Brian Murray is an Army Iraq veteran. He was serving in HHC, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division when wounded in a firefight on August 20, 2006. David A. Regan is an Army Iraq veteran. He was assigned to Company E, 1-66 Armor, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Camp Liberty when wounded January 13, 2009. Joe W. Rigby is an Army veteran, twice wounded in Vietnam. He was a member of MACV Advisor Team 33 when wounded in the II Corps area, January 28, 1965; and was assigned to 2-12 Inf, 25th Infantry Division when wounded January 24, 1969 in the III Corps area. Enrique R. Trevino II is an Army Afghanistan veteran, wounded May 29, 2009 when assigned to 1-26 Infantry. Charles B. Wideman is a Marine Corps Korean War veteran, wounded December 2, 1950 when serving in 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Jason E. Worsdale is an Army Iraq veteran wounded north of Baghdad in May 2007 when assigned to Army Special Operations Command. ….Chapter 1919’s Congratulations To… PATRIOT BRICE H. BARNES ….Honorary Colonel of the Regiment, 47th Infantry... THEN.. TET-68 SCT PLAT 2-47 INF WIDOW’S VILLAGE, HO NAI VILLAGE 1Lt Brice Barnes led Scout Platoon, 2-47 Inf on 31 Jan 1968. After that day his 40 men were collectively awarded 3-Distinguished Service Cross’s, 6-Silver Stars, 22-Bronze Stars w/V device, and 20 Purple Heart Medals. Now 42 years later, Brice has just been made ―Honorary Colonel,‖ 47th Infantry Regiment. AND NOW... FT BENNING, GA AT THE PARADE FIELD BEFORE THE CEREMONY, APRIL 29, 2010
PATRIOT BULLETIN Page 5 ADJUTANTS CALL W e have a chapter officer change announcement this month, or, more accurately, an officer addition. Our recently retired Service Officer, Tony Moore, has volunteered to return to duty and is once again available for counseling and assistance with veterans claims. He can be contacted at (512) 417-4132. Jon Medina has not been replaced, but still retains appointment as Service Officer (we can have more than one), and hopefully Jon can soon go through the Department Service Officer training and earn his accreditation. Despite the ―summer break‖ with Chapter 1919 not holding an event of its own since the Installation of Officers meeting at Hill’s Café way back on May 15th, your commander and some of his staff have nonetheless been really busy putting in appearances at a variety of public events. In fact, lately wherever veterans organizations have gathered collectively, Commander Burkhardt has been on hand with Chapter 1919’s informational display and a few volunteer assistants to let people know who we are and, depending on the audience, to do some recruiting. As you can see from all the newly signed up patriots on the facing page opposite, those opportunities have resulted in the chapter’s best recruiting success that it has enjoyed in recent years. He has been especially attentive in making Chapter 1919 appearances at events such as the ―Wounded Warriors‖ and the ―Wheelers For The Wounded‖ Adventure Weekend, and the Round Rock Express’ ―Veterans Appreciation‖ game at Dell Diamond, all of which specifically included many Iraq and Afghanistan wounded, and he is finding them to be receptive to his message about what Chapter 1919 does and receptive to becoming members of MOPH. Chapter 1919’s next meeting is 228 years exactly, since the day General George Washington created the ―badge of military merit,‖ the award we know today as the Purple Heart, and so each year we reverently observe ―Purple Heart Day‖ with the same devotion as we do in honoring George Washington’s birthday in February. One of the things we will do, before the meeting gets started, is to view our Power Point slide show of chapter members. Over 140 members have provided us a photo and are included, and more are being added all the time. Members are invited to send their photo from some point in time near to the war in which they were wounded, and preferably when in uniform. Digital photos are welcome by e-mail to: adjutant@purpleheartaustin.org, Printed photos may be mailed to me, Adjutant Milt Carr, at the return address of this newsletter. Those will be promptly scanned and mailed back to the sender. WWII veterans photos will also be submitted and posted to the patriot’s entry in the ―WWII Registry‖ of the National WWII Memorial located in Washington, D.C., if that has not already been done. Changes of address come in all the time and Chapter 1919 Patriots move as frequently as the rest of the population. One of our members has recently moved to Indiana and asked for assistance in finding a chapter there to affiliate with, and we were happy to do so. We enthusiastically welcome distant members, Patriots anywhere can always have a home in Chapter 1919, that’s one of the reasons we put out this large newsletter.
