COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
S
ummer is coming soon; I say we need to
be sure we don’t get overheated. I know,
as I get older I can’t stand the heat as I used
to. Drink lots of water, and stay in the shade,
please.
The Chapter, at our next meeting, will be
electing next year’s slate of officers and we
will, in my opinion, have a very good team. I
would like to thank the officers who are
staying again this next year. We will work
together to make it a good year for the
chapter. I plan to help the new Commander in
any way I can to help him get onboard. Please
remember this is one of the most important
meetings of the year. The Chapter needs to
support the new officers, so let them know by
being there for the elections.
We have started to help our most recently
adopted unit in Iraq, the 36 th Combat Aviation
Brigade (CAB). We will be supporting the
Family Readiness Groups (FRG’s) for two of
the units from the 36 th CAB. Those are the
Headquarters & Headquarters Company of
the Brigade and 1-449 Assault Helicopter
Battalion. We expect to help them by sending
“care packages” of personal items needed by
the individual soldiers in Iraq. Elaine and I
will be having our initial meetings with the
Family Readiness Groups of the two units
later this month.
This month and next, Chapter 1919 will be
presenting ROTC Leadership Awards to
Cadets in the 26 high schools and universities
in the area served by our chapter. Patriots
Milton Carr, Raymond Diaz, John Eli, Hal
Huth, Lee Hagan, and myself have been
designated as presenters so far, but, we can
use some more. If you have some connection
with the ROTC program in one of our
supported schools and would like to volunteer
to be a presenter, please call me at 339-8034.
Patriots, the smile on the ROTC Cadet’s face
when you pin that medal on their chest will be
something you will remember for a long time.
This month I want to thank Albert Tapia for
his help with the Coffee Bar this year. Albert
is not a Purple Heart member but is on our
schedule many times a month. He is this
month’s “for the good of the Order person”.
The Coffee Bar still needs help, please call
me if you can spare the time, 339-8034, or
call Raymond, 444-6342. Albert Tapia, a big
thanks and a respectful salute.
PATRIOT BULLETIN
NEW MEMBERS
We have a new member that has been added to the rolls of Chapter 1919 since publication of
last month’s PATRIOT BULLETIN. Welcome and Congratulations to:
CW4 WILLIAM L. (CHUCK) REVELS is an Army Iraq veteran. Chief Revels was
wounded twice while serving in the 101st Aviation Regiment. The first time was in Mosul on
Dec 31, 2004. The second time was just outside Camp Spicher at Tikrit on May 23, 2005,
following which he was medically evacuated from the hospital at Balad to Landstuhl and then
to Walter Reed Army Hospital where he was treated (mostly for related conditions) for another
eight months before being released. Chuck is still proudly serving and does not anticipate
retirement from active duty for several more years.
At “press-time” we had two additional applications in processing at National Headquarters.
KENNETH W. GILBERT, Army, Vietnam
DOUG SCHELLING, Marine Corps, Iraq
HAZLEWOOD ACT
...Providing Education Benefits to Texas Veterans...
Currently, nearly half of our chapter’s newly joining
members are Iraq veterans, and our website attracts
more queries every month. What those two groups
have in common is that both frequently ask the same
thing. What are my education benefits? A big part
of our answer is: If you are a Texas resident, with
no GI/Montgomery benefits remaining, your biggest
potential benefit would be Texas’ Hazlewood Act, a
state program that provides education benefits to
honorably discharged or separated Texas veterans
(not just Purple Heart recipients). In the last school
year for which data is available, 8,885 Texas veteran
students were using benefits of the Hazlewood Act.
The Act provides exemption from “all dues, fees,
and charges, including fees for correspondence
courses but excluding property deposit fees, student
service fees, and any fees or charges for lodging,
board, or clothing…..at Texas public colleges or
universities” (the list of Texas Public Institutions is
available from a link in the above listed website).
To apply, veterans must: be citizens of the U.S. at
the time of entry; be Texas residents and Texas
residents at the time they entered service; have served
at least 181 days of active duty; have exhausted all
federal education benefits available; and several other
stipulations apply but those are the biggest hurdles.
How to apply: Provide registrar of your college with
proof of your service (DD214), and proof of
eligibility for GI/Montgomery benefits by requesting
a letter from the VA office in Muskogee, Oklahoma
(call 888-442-4551). Complete the application (see
links in “Program Purpose” in the website above) and
submit it to your college’s financial aid office.

T
ake Note: Last minute calendar changes have just been posted. Hill’s Café, our
host for the May meeting, has changed the date to May 5th. That is not really a bad
thing because that means that we will promptly Install Officers for the coming term only
two weeks after our Election Meeting (April 21st). However, “Yours Truly” cannot
efficiently produce another newsletter in just two weeks time so this is your combined
April—May issue. We will send local area patriots a Memorial Day mailing, but, your
next full PATRIOT BULLETIN will be the June issue. Also, in the calendar on the back
cover of this bulletin, for the first time you can find our projected events for July through
December 2007, use it to post your personal calendar for the remainder of this year.
The feature story in this month’s issue is of Patriot Donald Morrison, an infantryman in
WWII wounded in Germany late in the war. Doing interviews for these monthly Purple
Heart stories is always enjoyable for me because of the tremendous range of experiences
among our patriots. There are many ways that soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines can
become wounded and I thought by now that I’d heard most of them, but, in Chapter
1919, Don’s story is unique among those we have collected so far. I had heard tales of
men hit by a bullet, but whose lives were saved by the bible they were carrying into
battle, those are the stuff of legend and I never expected to meet someone it happened to.
Don not only lived to tell about it, he still has his government issue New Testament with
the German 88mm shell fragment imbedded in it. I cherish all the different stories that
have been published in our newsletter but this one of Don Morrison is truly remarkable.
The latest news from National Headquarters is that we have a new National Adjutant.
Patriot Joe Palagyi comes from Napa, California and he has served as a Chapter
Commander and as Junior and Senior Vice Commander of that Department. He was
named “California Patriot of the Year, 2006-2007.” Texas’ own, Patriot Bill Bacon
from Alamo Chapter 1836, is not really departing from National Headquarters, he’s
really just jumped sideways from National Adjutant back to the job of Membership
Director, from which position he had been drafted back 30 months ago.
A Chapter Membership List in booklet form was mailed to each Patriot last November,
and we anticipate doing this on an annual basis from now on. Previously, because of the
cost, Membership Booklets were only sent to those members who donated to “Boosters,”
but we are now budgeting to provide every member with an updated copy once a year.
This notice is a good place for me to restate our “Privacy Rights” policy. Membership
information is not released to any outside persons or organizations. Our “Members
Only” membership booklet with addresses and phone numbers is provided internally
only to our own members for the personal use of each of us with the restriction that it is
not to be used or released to others for commercial, political, or any other purposes. For
any patriot who prefers that their address and phone number be withheld from fellow
members within the chapter (that is easy to do), please mail a note to that effect
addressed to me at the return address on this newsletter and I will be happy to
accommodate.
PATRIOT BULLETIN
ASSISTANT ADJUTANT’S
FINAL REPORT
Last November, I took on the task of registering
our Chapter’s WWII Patriots in the “Registry Of
Remembrances” of the National WWII Memorial
in Washington, D.C. After a brief delay for
recovery from back surgery, last month I finished
up the last of 113 entries and am proud to say my
initial job is now finished. Chapter 1919 has 170
WWII veterans and I found that all the others
already had existing entries in the registry. Some
of those already posted also had accompanying
photos, therefore, some of those in our chapter’s
photo collection were not needed and as a result, I
only had to submit a total of 26 patriot photos.
Although I have done all the work I can from the
material available in the chapter records at this
time; as new material is received, this will be a
continuing project. Our WWII veterans who have
not already done so are encouraged to send a photo
or snapshot from the period of their wartime
service to Adjutant, Milt Carr, 5701 Painted
Valley Dr., Austin, TX 78759. Your originals will
be scanned and immediately returned by mail. You
are missing out if you do not participate.
The “Registry of Remembrances” is something you
should look up yourself. Go to the memorial
website: www.wwiimemorial.com and then search
by name entry, you will find all our patriots entries.
LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Chapter 1919 is sponsoring a team of the University Hills Optimists Little League Baseball again this year,
but things are not quite the same. For several years now, Rudy Bautista has coached the team that we sponsor
but, Rudy tells us that the rest of the league got tired of his (our) team winning all the time and taking all the
awards so they promoted him to President of UHO Baseball this year and are matching us up with a fresh
new team. Anyway, congratulations Rudy !
Our team is the “Astros,” in the Mustang League and our sponsorship donation purchased the baseball caps
and shirts for the team. There are 14 “Astros” on the team of 9-10 year-olds, with Gerard Washington, head
DONALD C. MORRISON
Army, WWII, Europe
Patriot, Chapter 1919
Page 8
Donald Morrison was born in Stoughton, Wisconsin in 1926 and in his early
childhood years he attended the Brick Church Grade School in Walworth County.
In March 1935, his family moved to Sharon Township and they were living on a
farm there in 1944 when Donald graduated from High School in Darien. He
wanted to go into the Navy right after high school, but didn’t pass the physical.
Donald’s father told him that if he really wanted to get into military service he
BEFORE HIS DISCHARGE
would have to leave the farm and take a job in town, because the draft board would not take farmers because
of their importance to the war effort. He took that advice, got a job, and immediately got drafted. When he
reported in, every third man was being taken by the Navy, but Donald was not lucky and on August 21, 1944
he was sworn into the Army, entering active duty from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He went by train to Fort Sheridan, Illinois and from there was ordered to Camp Wheeler, near Macon,
Georgia, and that was a four-day train ride. He immediately went into the 16-week Basic Training course.
But, at the end of the 14th week the training course was terminated in order to speed replacements to Europe
as a result of the Battle of the Bulge. Donald was given four-days furlough, and got to fly home. That was
the first time he had ever been on an airplane and it was a memorable trip. The thermometer was at 20 below
zero when they landed in Chicago.
After the brief home leave, Donald Morrison reported in at Fort Meade, Maryland and
was sent to Camp Miles Standish in Massachusetts, from which he sailed from Boston
Harbor on January 8, 1945 on a former luxury liner, the Ile de France, which had been
converted to use as a troop carrier. The vessel arrived in Scotland on January 17, 1945
and the troops were sent across England on a day-and-a-half journey by train to
Southampton. After only an over-night there he was shipped across the English Channel
to Le Harve, France. From there he traveled across France and into Belgium by truck
convoy and finally reached his unit of assignment. It was bitterly cold and there was deep
snow on the ground when he arrived at Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry
Division. He wasn’t there long. Donald says, “I had only been in Company K for just a
few days when I came down with the mumps and was sent to the hospital. In the hospital
it was found that I also had frostbitten feet. It was some time before I was sent back to
division, and I hadn’t been back more than 48 hours before I got sick again. I went on
sick call with 104 degree fever and they sent me back to the hospital. This time I had
Scarlettina and it was another three-weeks before I was over that and finally got back to
Company K, this time to stay.”
Donald Morrison was a Light Machine Gunner in Company K and he remained with
them until after the war in Europe was over. He was wounded in Germany on March 23,
1945. Company K was in the attack west of Koblenz, moving through the hills parallel to
the Rhine River, when they came under fire from a German 88mm gun. A shell
detonated close by and Donald was hit. He fell unconscious, bleeding from a wound to
the face and it appeared he also had been hit in the chest. Believing him dead, the
remaining men in his gun team picked up the machine gun and continued forward with
the company as it advanced. Later, as he slowly regained consciousness, Donald first

Page 9
PATRIOT BULLETIN
found himself all alone, and then he quickly found the strength to hurry after
his comrades. Upon catching up to them, some of the men in his squad
“looked like they were seeing a ghost.” A company medic treated his head
wound and then examined him, searching for the wound under the large hole
torn through the pocket of his jacket. But, there was no wound. Instead, the
medic retrieved from his pocket the New Testament that Donald had carried
into combat. An 88mm shell fragment had penetrated half-way through and
was embedded in the little pocket Bible. The sharp edged, inch-long piece of
steel had been stopped directly over the first book of Corinthians, chapter 15,
verse 10, which reads, “ But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his
grace toward me was not in vain.”
Donald says, “No question I would have been dead if I had not carried my
Bible. I was not a particularly religious man at the time, but after that, I
knew there had to be a God. I was just very thankful for another chance.”
The division continued to advance across Germany, from Koblenz toward
Leipzig, encountering sporadic resistance and Donald Morrison had several
more close calls as they moved across Germany. East of Leipzig, resistance
became heavy and as they reached Grimma, he lost his Assistant Gunner,
wounded when hit by a “potato masher” grenade, but, Don himself made it all
the way through to V-E Day without ever being wounded again. When the
fighting ended, the division was moved into Czechoslovakia and Donald’s
Company K was stationed in the village of Dobrany, near Pilzen, from May
6th until July 7, 1945. Initially, his unit guarded several thousand German
prisoners, and then in July the 2nd Infantry Division was re-deployed back to
the United States.
Donald Morrison sailed for home on July 13, 1945 and he remembers
passing by the Statue of Liberty as his troop ship came into harbor on July
20 th . From reception at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey he was sent to Camp
McCoy, Wisconsin, near home. From there he was quickly granted a 30-day
furlough home with another six-days travel allowed before reporting to his
next duty station, Camp Swift, Texas. From September 1945 until April
1946, Donald was at Camp Swift, and then returned to Camp McCoy where
he was processed through the Separation Center. He was discharged from the
Army in the grade of Corporal on April 12, 1946 and returned home.
For over twenty years after the war Donald worked in various jobs. He says,
“I farmed for awhile, then went into the construction business, worked in
sales, and then took a job with Allstate Insurance.” His wife was seriously
injured in an automobile accident and was hospitalized for 14 weeks. After
that, the cold winters in Wisconsin bothered her a great deal. They visited
Austin, Texas and found the weather much more agreeable for her condition.
They moved here in 1970 and Donald soon went to work for the Travis
County Tax Assessor-Collector. By the time he retired in 1991 his office had
become the Travis County Appraisal District. He has been a Life Member of
the Military Order of the Purple Heart, affiliated with Texas Capital Chapter
1919 for the past seven years.
We have just had the good fortune of going a full
month without having received the report of the death
of any of our members. At such times PATRIOT
BULLETIN can devote the closing article to
inspirational writings rather than death notices. For
this month, we chose the following excerpt from the
“I NOW KNOW WHY MEN WHO HAVE BEEN TO WAR YEARN TO
REUNITE. NOT TO TELL STORIES OR LOOK AT OLD PICTURES.
NOT TO LAUGH OR WEEP. COMRADES GATHER BECAUSE
THEY LONG TO BE WITH THE MEN WHO ONCE ACTED THEIR
BEST, MEN WHO SUFFERED AND SACRIFICED, WHO WERE
STRIPPED RAW, RIGHT DOWN TO THEIR HUMANITY.
I DID NOT PICK THESE MEN. THEY WERE DELIVERED BY FATE.
BUT, I KNOW THEM IN A WAY I KNOW NO OTHER MEN. I HAVE
NEVER GIVEN ANYONE SUCH TRUST. THEY WERE WILLING TO
GUARD SOMETHING MORE PRECIOUS THAN MY LIFE. THEY
WOULD HAVE CARRIED MY REPUTATION, THE MEMORY OF
ME. IT WAS PART OF THE BARGAIN WE ALL MADE, THE
REASON WE WERE SO WILLING TO DIE FOR ONE ANOTHER.
I CANNOT SAY WHERE WE ARE HEADED. OURS ARE NOT
PERFECT FRIENDSHIPS; THOSE ARE THE PROVINCE OF
LEGEND AND MYTH. A FEW OF MY COMRADE’S DRIFT FAR
FROM ME NOW, SENDING BACK ONLY OCCASIONAL WORD.
I KNOW THAT ONE DAY EVEN THESE COULD FALL TO SILENCE.
SOME OF THE MEN WILL STAY CLOSE, A COUPLE, PERHAPS,
ALWAYS AT HAND.
AS LONG AS I HAVE MEMORY, I WILL THINK OF THEM ALL,
EVERY DAY. I AM SURE THAT WHEN I LEAVE THIS WORLD, MY
LAST THOUGHT WILL BE OF MY FAMILY AND MY COMRADES
…SUCH GOOD MEN.”
