without the feedback from you. Thanks to all the input we have received
along the way, you helped us to stay on the right path. As a result, we are
now happy to introduce the following improvements and additions to our
product offerings:
• New carrier-free implant installation system for simplified handling
• Streamlined implant-abutment connection; reduced from three sizes
down to two
• New color-coded packaging to facilitate easy identification of the
implant-abutment connection size
• One measuring system for all abutments

New carrier-free implant
installation system
All new Astra Tech implants will now be delivered without a premounted
carrier. Instead, new Implant Drivers are available in two
diameters to fit all Astra Tech implants, making installation faster, easier
and more efficient. By using the Implant Driver, optimal visibility of the
implant site is maintained. The assessment of installation depth and
ability to make necessary adjustments are also simplified. Implant
Drivers come in two different lengths for optimized handling both in
the anterior and posterior regions.
The new Ratchet Wrench, in combination with the Driver Handle,
can be used for final seating of the implant. The Ratchet Wrench is
made up of only two parts that can easily be dismantled, allowing for
simplified cleaning and sterilization.

One implant-abutment connection in two sizes
To minimize the number of components for simplified treatment planning
and inventory management, the Conical Seal Design implant-abutment
connection now comes in just two sizes — small and large. In order to clearly
differentiate the new components from the previous ones, the color-coding
system has been changed. The new aqua and lilac colors now correspond to
the implant-abutment connection sizes. The previous color-coding system
corresponded to the implant diameter.
Additionally, some abutments and components that have an implant
connection are now laser-marked for simplified identification of their
connection size. For your convenience, abutment screws are included
with the abutments.
New color-coding for implant-abutment connection sizes:
• Aqua – Small: Implant diameters 3.5 and 4.0
• Lilac – Large: Implant diameters 4.5 and 5.0
Aqua
3.5 and 4.0 diameter implants and their corresponding abutments and
components have changed. These products, with the small implant-abutment
connection, are not compatible and cannot be used interchangeably with
previous implants, abutments or components.
Lilac
The large implant-abutment connection in 4.5 and 5.0 diameter implants and
their corresponding components has not changed. Therefore, you can still use
your previous inventory of large connection sized abutments and components
with any 4.5 and 5.0 diameter implant.

However, because the measuring system has been changed for new abutments
and components, we recommend that new products are used together
whenever possible. Refer to “One measuring system for all abutments” on
page 6 for detailed information.

New packaging
All packaging for implants, abutments and components that have an implant
connection will be color-coded aqua or lilac to identify their implant-abutment
connection size.
Implant packaging
Implants are supplied dry-sterilized, and their outer containers will remain the
same. However, both the container and cap are semi-transparent to facilitate
the differentiation of new implants from previous ones.
New implant packaging
Implant diameters and lengths are clearly marked on the packages. Like
previous implants, the inner containers of the implant packaging are lasermarked
with the implant diameter and length.

Packaging of abutments and components with an implant connection will
be color-coded with either a circle or a hexagon for easy identification of
their corresponding implant-abutment connection size and of their indexing
capabilities:

Convenient labeling
To help facilitate the process of maintaining important information in the
patient records, the label can easily be peeled off and adhered to the patient
or communication forms.
All sterile packed abutments and components have the same feature.

One measuring system for all abutments
The method for measuring the height of all abutments within the Astra Tech
implant system is now the same. All measurements are made in millimeter
increments starting at 0 mm from the implant level. This simplified system
allows for:
• Easier selection of the optimal restorative component
• Quicker and more predictable procedure
New Abutment Depth Gauge
As a result of the reduction in implant-abutment connection sizes and
streamlined measuring system, a new Abutment Depth Gauge has been
developed with two tips that correspond to the two connection sizes. The
tips are clearly marked with bands for measuring the mucosal height over
the implant level in millimeters.

measuring all abutments and components that fit into
the implants.

Surgical procedures
New Surgical Tray
The new Surgical Tray has been designed to facilitate the organization
of all drills and instruments. The tray is now clearly labeled with
the drill type next to each space for simplified set-up, and slots for
5.0 S implant drills are now included. Diagrams indicating surgical
progression for each implant diameter have also been added.
Instrumentation
If you have a Surgical Wrench (REF 24178) and/or Torque Wrench
(REF 24075), they can be adapted for used with the new Implant
Drivers for installation or final seating of the new carrier-free
implants. To do so, you will need the Wrench Adapter.

Prosthetic procedures
All corresponding abutments and components of 3.5 and 4.0 diameter
implants with the small implant-abutment connection have been changed and
cannot be used with previous implants, abutments or components.

Implant Pick-up

Existing inventory of large implant-abutment connection abutments and
components can be used with all 4.5 and 5.0 diameter implants. However, it
is important to remember that the measuring system has been changed for
Healing Abutments, Direct Abutments, Abutment ST, UniAbutments, Angled
Abutments and Ball Abutments. All abutments are now measured from the
implant level.
For handling of the restorative procedure, you will need the following
instruments and components to adapt to the new implant-abutment
connection sizes:

Laboratory procedures
Due to changes in 3.5 and 4.0 diameter implants, previous Fixture
Replica 3.5 and Fixture Replica 4.0 should be kept for restorative
procedures for patients with implants that have been previously
installed. They are not compatible with and cannot be used with
new, aqua color-coded components.
Fixture replicas for previous 4.5 and 5.0 implants can be used for the
new 4.5 and 5.0 implants. However, it is important to remember that
the measuring system has been changed for Healing Abutments,
Direct Abutments, Abutment ST, UniAbutments, Angled Abutments
and Ball Abutments. All abutments are now measured from the
implant level.

For handling of the laboratory procedure, you will need the
following component to adapt to the new implant-abutment
connection sizes:

Frequently asked questions
What implants are affected by this new change in implant-abutment connection?
Only the connection of 3.5/4.0 implants have changed. The pre-mounted carrier, however, has been
removed from all implants for simplified handling.
What is the Wrench Adapter used for?
The Wrench Adapter (REF 24572) was developed so existing surgical customers can use their existing
Surgical Wrench (REF 24178) and/or Torque Wrench (REF 24075) for implant placement with the new
Implant Drivers.
What is the purpose of the new Driver Handle?
The Driver Handle, in combination with the Ratchet Wrench, can be used for fi nal seating of the implant.
How do I distinguish between the two different connections and identify their corresponding components?
All packaging for the components will be color-coded to indicate the size of the connection that they
correspond to: aqua for the small connection (3.5/4.0) and lilac for the large connection (4.5/5.0).
Some components with an implant connection (eg. Healing Abutments) are laser-marked for identification
of their implant-abutment connection size.
How does the new depth measuring for prosthetic components work?
The measuring system is stated in millimeters, with the “0” starting point located at the implant level.
This applies to all components that connects into the implants. The measurements in the names of the
components reflect the height from the implant level to the restorative margin.
Can the packaging labels for abutments be used for patient records/communication forms similar to the
implants?
Yes. For your convenience, a perforated section of the packaging label of all sterile abutments and
components can be removed and is adhesive for simplified documentation.
Will all restorative components have color-coded labels?
Yes, all sterile and non-sterile abutments and components with an implant connection will be color-coded
to indicate the implant-abutment connection size.
Since the 4.5 and 5.0 implants have remained the same, can I use existing abutments that I already have
in inventory with the new 4.5/5.0 implants?
Yes, however, because the measuring system of components and abutments that fit into the implant has
been changed, it is recommended that new components and abutments are used together whenever
possible.
Can I use the existing replicas that I currently have in the laboratory?
Due to the change in the internal threads of 3.5/4.0 implants, previous replicas for these implants are
not compatible with the new implants and only new replicas can be used. Replicas for 4.5/5.0 implants
can be used for both previous and new versions of the implants.
