ASA assists the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology in co-ordinating space activities and is responsible for establishing the programmatic framework and strategic guidance of industry and scientific institutions to play a significant role in international space related undertakings. For this objective ASA is supported by leading Austrian space companies and institutes, such as Austrian Aerospace, Siemens Austria, Steyr- Daimler-Puch Space Technology, Plansee, Joanneum Research, Austrian Research Centres Seibersdorf. ASA is responsible for: q Organisation and management of programme contributions on ESA, bilateral and international level; q Promotion and support of Austrian science and industry; q Supporting and advising the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology in carrying out the Austrian space policy; q Co-ordination of national space activities and liaison management with foreign space agencies; q Organisation and management of space relevant events and education and training activities; q Public relations 1. ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMES Area(s) of specializaton: basic space sciences, remote sensing, satellite communications, satellite meteorology Summary of courses and research activities: The annual Summer School Alpbach looks back on a long tradition and takes place on a yearly basis since 1975 on different subjects of space research. The aim of the Summer School is to offer advanced training and working experience to European graduates as well as post-graduate students and young scientists and engineers on subjects which are not usually part of the academic curricula. The participants are being enabled to extend and to strengthen their knowledge and to put it into practice during the workshops, the desired results of which are the exemplarily design of space missions. The Summer School is organised by the Austrian Space Agency in co-operation with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology and co-sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the national space authorities of its member states. This annual event has a high reputation worldwide for its promotion of young space scientists and engineers.
