PARASITES? herbal solutions made simple By Patricia A. Griffiths Parasites date back thousands of years and are as old as the animals they feed upon. They can be as small as one cell, such as giardia, or several feet long, such as tape worms. They can be internal (round worms, whip worms, heart worms, etc.), or external (fleas, ticks and mites). They include fungus, yeast and mold infections. Parasites can be transported by insects, including ticks and mosquitoes. Their eggs can be passed from one animal to another through their feces, or through eating or drinking from the same bowl. Parasites can be picked up from drinking untreated water or even from the food we eat and the ground we walk on. Some of them can be transmitted to humans. Even yeast, which is a normal part of our intestinal tract, can get out of hand and become destructive through the use of modern medicines. Symptoms of a parasitic infestation include: diarrhea, nausea, cramps, change in appetite, foul-smelling gas, bloating, restlessness, coughing, fever, anemia, fatigue, muscle pain, wheezing and coughing followed by vomiting. Your pet may not have all of the symptoms but if he has two or more of these symptoms, parasites should be considered as the cause. A visit to your veterinarian will confirm your suspicions. Once it is decided that your dog has parasites, you have two choices. You can either follow the parasite treatment your veterinarian prescribes or you can choose a holistic treatment. Many people shy away from holistic treatments because there are so many to choose from and it’s difficult to know which one is best. Most of them do work, but they have their pros and cons, so let’s take a look at some basic ingredients in a good anti-parasitic formula. First, you will need an herb that will kill parasites. Long before the development of modern drugs, man learned how to quell the tide of these little pests by using certain plants. Nature has provided, in every part of the world, plants that will keep these little squigglers at bay. Here is a list of some of the more common herbs used in many formulas. Keep in mind that none of these herbs should be overused, as they can cause complications, so care must be taken not to give more than is recommended. 40 May/June 2012 | Dogs Naturally Magazine

Amargo can cause blindness if it is given in large quantities. Black Seed comes from the Mideast and parts of Africa. It has been used for centuries by the indigenous populations It will get rid of most types of worms and is completely safe. Cloves are effective against microscopic parasites, such as giardia and coccidia. Freshly crushed leaves will kill the eggs of parasites. The oil of cloves can be highly toxic given in large doses, so you should be careful when using it on small dogs. Garlic contains an amino acid called allicin which is effective against round and hook worms. When used in large amounts for long periods of time, garlic can cause anemia. Pumpkin Seeds were used by the American Indians to expel round and tape worms. Early settlers mixed pumpkin seeds with milk and honey and gave it to their children to rid them of these two parasites. Pumpkin seeds are safe to use, even during pregnancy. Black Walnut Hulls are effective against tape and round worms. There haven’t been a lot of studies done on black walnut hulls and for that reason it is only recommended for short term use. Pau d’ Arco is another South American herb that is very effective against microscopic parasites and candida. Candida is a yeast infection but, because of the nature of antibiotics, candida overgrowth is becoming an increasingly common problem in our pets. Wormwood is also called absinth. Wormwood and black walnut hulls are effective against hundreds of different types of large and small parasites, but wormwood should not be used for more than three weeks at a time as it can affect the brain, causing retardation. Gentian Root is good for most round worms and liver flukes. It should not be used for more than three weeks, especially when there is weakness. With the exception of pumpkin seeds and black seed, none of these herbs should be used during pregnancy or lactation. Another thing you should look for in a parasite cleanse is an anti-microbial. Parasites carry viruses and bacteria, so many manufacturers will put an anti-microbial in their formulas. Some of these might include echinacea, golden seal and fenugreek. Many of the anti-parasitic herbs are also anti-microbial; these include garlic, gentian and Pau d’Arco. Olive Leaf has been used for centuries to effectively fight bacterial and viral infections. It has been proven to kill almost anything it comes in contact with. In addition, olive leaf is famous for its immune building functions. When the immune system is down, the microscopic parasites have an advantage over the body. When ridding your pet of parasites, it is important to keep the immune system stable. Jatoba, a South American herb, is also excellent for building the immune system and ridding the body of microscopic parasites. One more thing you will want to look for in a parasite formula is an herb that will calm the intestinal tract. Since parasites can cause bloating, gas and cramps, many manufacturers will add herbs that will make your dog more comfortable. Spearmint, peppermint and chamomile are the most common herbs you will find, but in trying to make their product unique, some makers may add less common herbs. Most manufacturers will list product ingredients and their uses on their web pages; otherwise it’s usually easy to find information via a web search. Most herbal wormer instructions will recommend giving the formula 10 days on, five days off, and then 10 days on. There is a reason why this is done: it takes 10 days to kill the worms.
