Message

This month, I am writing my article the day 

after Sisterhood Shabbat. Reflecting on this 

past Shabbat gives me special pride as a 

member of Temple Sinai and part of the 

Conservative Jewish movement. On this 

Shabbat morning each year, members of the 

Sisterhood lead the entire service, only 

women read Torah and Haftarah, women 

perform Hagbah and virtually of the Aliyot 

are reserved for women. 

The opportunity for women to perform 

these roles as part of the service is relatively 

recent in our tradition, even in Conservative 

Judaism. In fact, I can remember my sisters 

being upset that were not able to read 

Torah at their bat-mitzvot at a nearby Conservative 

synagogue only about forty years 

ago. One of the central tenets of our modern 

Conservative Judaism is that we are 

egalitarian. That means women can be 

recognized as men in virtually every aspect 

of our tradition. (However, I am sure 

women are pretty happy that don’t have to 

go through circumcision). But, this 

participation right is more than just related 

to being able to read Torah, Haftorah, Aliyot, 

Hagbah and being counted in the minyan; 

it is the participation in all aspects of 

synagogue life. Particularly gratifying to 

me was the fact that one of the Aliyot this 

past Shabbat was given to our four past 

presidents who have been women. This 

exhibits our commitment to this egalitarian 

ethic in all aspects of Temple Sinai life. 

I am well aware that the Reform 

movement has the same perspective on 

these issues as the Conservative movement. 

But, the major distinction is that we as 

Conservative Jews allow and encourage 

participation in many halachic requirements 

and rituals that Reform congregations have 

abandoned. For instance, we have daily 

minyanim where women are counted and, in 

fact, lead the services many days of the 

week. It is rare for a Reform synagogue to 

even hold daily minyanim at all. This mix of 

the traditional with the modern is what 

makes Temple Sinai, as a member of the 

Conservative movement special. This 

balance of the traditional with the realities 

of modern life is the bedrock of Conservative 

Judaism and why Sisterhood Shabbat 

encapsulates many of the goals for 

Conservative Judaism and Temple Sinai. 

A special thanks to the Sisterhood for 

organizing these services each year, and 

Mazal Tov to Barbara Rosenau and Carolyn 

Savitzky for co-chairing this year’s services 

and for the committee of Enid Horowitz, 

Linda Goldberg, Susan Budman and Flossie 

Albert for organizing the terrific Torah 

Fund Luncheon that followed. Finally, a 

congratulations to Sara Wenger, Sisterhood 

President, and the entire Sisterhood 

Executive Committee for not only making 

this Shabbat so special this year, but also for 

all the great work that Sisterhood does all 

year long.

They say “you can’t go back.” Who’s 

“they?” Well, singers like Gary Lewis and 

the Playboys, and Bruce Springsteen. The 

author Thomas Wolfe wrote a book entitled, 

You Can’t Go Home Again. 

I’m here to tell you that you can go back, 

especially if it’s to Israel! 

Whether you’ve been there once, or 

travelled to the Holy land multiple times, 

there’s always more to see, more to do, more 

to experience. If you’d like to visit again and 

are looking for an excursion that is out of the 

ordinary, well, have I got the trip for you! 

Faith Rubin and I will be leading a 

thirteen-day trip this summer, leaving on 

July 21 and returning on August 2. We’re 

calling it “Israel: As You’ve Never Seen It 

Before!” because we have crafted an 

itinerary that is truly unique. 

Ma Nishtanah – what makes our trip 

different from all others? Here’s our “top 

ten” list: 

At thirteen days in length, ours is 

longer than most. 

Our travel plans allow for a full day 

of touring on both our first and last 

day, maximizing our time “on the 

ground.” 

We’re concentrating more on the 

southern half of the country, 

including Beersheba, the Negev, 

and Eilat. 

We’ll experience several different 

cultures through visits to a Bedouin 

community; Petra, Jordan; and the 

Christian Quarter of the Old City. 

Shabbat in Jerusalem will be 

special with our own Kabbalat 

Shabbat service on the southern 

steps of the Temple Mount in the 

Old City; choice of synagogues to 

attend on Shabbat morning 

(optional); Seudah Shelishit – 

traditional third meal, and 

Havdalah in a Jerusalem park. 

We’ll learn about Israel’s high-tech 

industries at Ben-Gurion 

University; A Better Place – Israel’s 

electric car initiative; and 

Kibbutz Lotan, an eco-conscious 

community in the Negev. 

We’ll travel back in time as we 

view the history of Jerusalem at the 

magnificent and unusual “Chain of 

Generations“ Center, located 

adjacent to the Western Wall. 

We’ll see true acts of tzedakah at 

Lakiya – a weaving initiative 

empowering Bedouin women; Yad 

Lakashish – Lifeline for the Old, 

giving purpose to elderly Israelis; 

and Lilyot Restaurant – a place for 

troubled youth to train for a 

profession in the culinary arts. 

We will have the opportunity to 

view (and purchase!) original 

artwork and crafts at the Artists 

Village at Ein Hod; Nachalat 

Binyamin Arts and Crafts Fair in 

Tel Aviv; Lakiya Negev Weaving 

Project; and Yad Lakashish. 

We will experience all of this 

together as a chevra – a congenial 

group of like-minded people, and 

build common memories that will 

last a lifetime! 

It goes without saying that the food will 

be delicious – and plentiful, our Israeli guide 

will b e excep tional, and o ur 

accommodations first-rate! 

Faith and I would love to have you be a 

part of the growing number of people who 

have already committed to joining us.

pm, at which time we will share exciting 

details, updates and incentives related to the

In the aftermath of the tragic school 

shootings in Connecticut much has been said 

and written about security. At the local and 

national level individuals and institutions are 

engaging in a conversation around how to 

stay open for business and stay safe at the 

same time. 

After having spent a good deal of time 

over the past three weeks reading numerous 

emails on the topic of security, meeting with 

our local Police and Fire officials and 

communicating with colleagues two key 

themes emerge that are important for all of 

us to understand. First, no matter what we 

do, no business or institution can be assured 

of being one hundred percent safe. In a 

world where firearms can be gotten a hold 

of, through legal and illegal means, there is 

always a degree of risk. What we can 

control however , are the measures we have 

taken to plan for and react to emergencies.

THE MUSIC MAN IS COMING 

TO TEMPLE SINAI 

MARCH 13-17 

60 Years of Nationally Recognized Award 

Winning Theatre Continues… 

“76 trombones led the big parade, with a 

110 coronets close at hand. They were 

followed by rows and rows of the finest 

virtuosos…” aka The Temple Sinai Players, 

singing and dancing in the halls, in the 

auditorium and on the Temple Sinai stage. 

The Players are hard at work re-creating the 

world of 1912 River City, Iowa and 

becoming the lovable, albeit stubborn and 

quirky citizens of that mid-western town. 

The Music Man is the story of Harold 

Hill, a traveling salesman who comes to 

River City to sell band instruments and 

uniforms to the town’s children. He doesn’t 

know anything about playing music, so he 

convinces the town’s citizens to buy the 

instruments to escape the “trouble” that will 

be caused by the new pool table in town. All 

are taken in by his charm except Marian 

Paroo, the librarian. It is not until Harold 

helps Marian’s younger brother Winthrop 

overcome his fear of speaking that Marian 

falls for the lovable con-man. Everyone 

knows the show’s signature songs – 

It is important for all of our congregants 

and parents to know that much has been 

done at Temple Sinai over the past years to 

protect ourselves. As examples, we have an 

Emergency Response Plan that addresses 

numerous adverse circumstances from fires 

to intruders and how best to deal with them. 

As a result of a recent walkthrough of our 

Plan with Emergency Township personnel, 

minor changes are being made but it was 

gratifying to hear that our plan is thorough 

and well thought out. A new surveillance 

system continually records activity both 

inside and outside of our building. Our key 

fob and intercom systems allow us the ability 

to admit only those who should be on our 

premises. We recently completed upgrades 

to our fire and intrusion protection systems 

and schematics of our building and property 

are on file with all local emergency 

organizations. Fire drills are conducted 

regularly, first aid kits including a 

defibrillator are available and we have a 

reciprocity agreement with our neighbors 

next door should we need to evacuate and 

relocate. 

We expect over the weeks ahead to add 

new physical security to our school wing as 

well as supplementing our existing 

emergency alert system. Other measures are 

also being evaluated that we expect to be 

able to share shortly. 

“Seventy-six Trombones,” “Ya Got 

Trouble,” “Goodnight, My Someone” and 

“Wells-Fargo Wagon” to name just a few. 

Each year, the Players work hard to select 

a show that highlights the musical, artistic 

and creative talents of members of our 

congregation, as well as entertains our 

friends and family. We are confident that 

The Music Man, our 60 th production, will do 

all that and more. The Music Man is family 

entertainment at its best—a heartwarming 

story, endearing characters and tunes that 

stay with you long after you leave the 

theater. 

We still need volunteers to help us 

build and paint, sell candy and 

merchandise, do hair and make-up, work 

back-stage or play in our band. So please 

consider joining us.

As a synagogue and school we strive to 

balance being a place of warmth and 

welcome with the need for maintaining a 

secure environment. There are few easy 

answers to many of our concerns but we will 

continue to appropriately build upon the 

work that’s been done and introduce 

enhancements where they make the most 

sense. 

There is one more vital element of security 

that we all need to take ownership of. “If 

You See Something, Say Something!” has 

become a slogan intended to encourage all of 

us to keep our eyes and ears open. The very 

best security for Temple Sinai is for all staff, 

parents and congregants to look around at 

who’s walking into the building, who’s 

parking in the lot and who is asking for 

directions. Creating an environment of 

gently engaging others or saying something 

to the office staff is something doesn’t feel 

right is one of the best ways for us to stay 

safe. 

Hopefully, we will never need to use 

many of the procedures and capabilities we 

have planned for but we can take comfort 

knowing that we have created effective ways 

of mitigating risk and responding in case of 

emergencies.

Sisterhood 

Sara Wenger, 

President 

With gratitude to Sisterhood, I attended, for 

the first time, the Women’s League for 

Conservative Judaism Convention in Las 

Vegas chaired by our own Faye Laveson. 

Yasher Koach to Faye for undertaking this 

amazing and complex organizational feat. 

Praying, studying, and sharing meals with 

hundreds of conservative Jewish women 

from North America fostered friendships 

that will sustain my connection to 

Sisterhood way beyond my own Presidency. 

I was awed by the richness and depth so 

many women brought to prayer and text 

study. Being led in morning prayers by 

twenty-something- year -olds was proof that 

opportunities for learning and ritual 

observance are realities for today’s young 

women, denied earlier generations. When I 

sat beside women of all ages who comfortably 

donned kippot, tefillin and tallit, articles 

I have not yet embraced, I pondered my 

own personal comfort zone for ritual prayer. 

My commitment to Conservative Judaism 

was invigorated through participating in 

workshops with some of the most renowned 

scholars in our tradition. Their teachings 

reinforced that we are an inclusive 

movement that respects a wide range of 

positions, both liberal and conservative, and 

honors egalitarian prayer and leadership. 

While each of us must find our own unique 

way in prayer, Sisterhood, or synagogue 

life, the enduring message from convention 

is that there are a multitude of wise and 

caring women who stand right by our side 

to guide, encourage and mentor us on our 

chosen paths. 

Our own Sisterhood leadership continues 

to provide a rich array of opportunities for 

personal and spiritual growth. Sisterhood 

Shabbat and Torah Fund Brunch illustrate 

the strength and talents of our membership. 

Our sister-led worship service is the 

quintessential blending of the creative and 

spiritual elements of Sisterhood. Topping 

it off, Temple Sinai Sisterhood received a 

Torah Fund Achievement Award from 

Women’s League for Conservative Judaism 

for reaching our dedicated goal of $12,000. 

On January 20 th , Sisterhood sponsored 

the annual Camp Fair, connecting our 

congregants and community to an array of 

summer camping opportunities. Vendors 

displayed their products at Temple Sinai 

where the attendance is always excellent. 

On January 23 rd , our second annual Tu 

B’Shevat Seder offers yet another occasion 

for women to join together for a night of 

poetic readings and tasty nibbles honoring 

Israel’s first fruits and our environment. 

With Purim upon us, Sisterhood is 

already preparing Shalach Manot for 

hundreds of families. In anticipation of this 

festive holiday, scores of volunteers are 

excitedly organizing for the giving of gifts, 

hamentashen and goodies. Keep your eyes 

and ears open for the Sisterhood mailing 

that invites you to designate your shalach 

manot. 

Finally, a new and exciting committee 

has been working diligently toward our 

culminating event on April 21st, 

Sisterhood’s First Annual Health and 

Wellness Fair. This will be a fascinating 

day of workshops and speakers from across 

the holistic and medical spectrums that 

promise to refresh and invigorate all who 

attend. Whether you enjoy yoga, 

meditation, zumba or want a consult on 

nutrition, health care, or massage, come and 

learn: there will be something for everyone, 

all ages, all stages. 

Sisterhood is ever evolving and there is 

no limit to the ideas we generate. It’s never 

too late to join Temple Sinai Sisterhood. 

Friendship, volunteerism, leadership is all at 

your fingertips. Everyone has a voice and 

a special talent. Whether you are single, 

married, a bubbe or a busy mom, working 

inside our outside the home, Sisterhood 

values you just the way you are. Join us! 

Jewish Family Living 

We’ve now rung out 2012 and rung in 2013. We marked Tu B’Shvat 

(Sh’vat 15) the New Year of the Trees, Rosh Ha Shanah le Ilanot, 

enjoying fruit, especially carob, apples, grapes, and figs. 

Now we’re ready to “Be happy! It’s Adar”. On Adar 14 we celebrate 

Purim. That will be February 24, 2013. You may remember Purim is 

special for us because my mom and grandmom Winokur were Purim 

babies. Besides the regular hamantaschen we always baked two giants, 

one for each. Each giant had multiple fillings and was big enough for 

candles. We were truly Adar happy. 

Though hamantaschen, graggers, costumes and parodies mark the 

festival, the mitzvah of Purim is to hear every word of the megillah, the 

Book of Esther. Soooo eat, drink and be merry, meet me in schul to hear 

the megillah, gragger out Haman’s name, have an extra chance to meet 

and greet and “Be happy! It’s Adar”. 

Deb Cohen shared a different hamantaschen recipe with me. If you 

like a plump, gorgeous not too crispy crunch hamantaschen, give me a 

call, I’ll send you a copy.

It is axiomatic that as one journeys down the 

highway of life one will encounter a few 

bumps along the way. Unfortunately 

HAZAKniks are not excluded. 

One of the first bumps when one reaches 

the age of HAZAKitude is a slight loss in 

the brain’s neuron count. Not to worry too 

much, because the average brain has enough 

neurons to store the contents of all the books 

ever written with space left over. But 

neurons notwithstanding, at our age we 

begin to forget things. 

On Thursday evenings, yours truly leads 

the minyan service at Temple Sinai. There 

are three or four places in the service where 

minyan members are called upon for responsive 

readings. As much as possible, we call 

upon the congregants by name, “Henry, 

please read the psalm on page thirty two.”

The bump aka problem arises when I am 

about to call on someone who is a regular at 

the Thursday service and I suddenly cannot 

remember that person’s name. Everyone 

likes to feel that they are special enough for 

people to know their names. I am 

embarrassed when I forget. The funny thing 

is I do not forget that I forgot. 

There is an upside to being classified as a 

HAZAKacious senior citizen. We can 

conspire with the grandkids against our 

children who too often deserve a 

cum-uppance. We are allowed to kvetch 

more though in truth nobody listens anyway. 

We get to sit at the head of the table where 

we don’t have to listen to the boring 

conversations “he said..she said.. he said 

back..” We get well meaning solicitous inquiries, 

“Is your chair comfortable,” “If the 

meat is a little tough, we can cut it into 

smaller pieces.” And most of all everyone 

knows our name, “Pop,” “Grandpop,” 

“zaidee,” or quite often “hey-you.” 

HAZAKerai: By this time, our January 

program with Rabbi Wohlberg will have 

been a memory. Our thanks for his candid 

observations on a touchy subject. On March 

4 th we welcome Fred Blum who will talk 

about “How to trace your ancestry,” a joint 

program with Men’s Club. There is a 

former member of our congregation who 

claims to be able to track his ancestors to the 

sixteen hundreds if you believe. I go back 

four generations to the person for whom I 

am named. Who he was I dunno, anything 

else I also dunno. 

April features the cartoonists for “Edge 

City,” Terry and Patty LaBan whose 

cartoons in the Philadelphia Inquirer are 

funny, incisive and thought provoking, often 

with a Jewish slant. Shalom. 

Temple Sinai USY 

USY is a typical teenage youth group 

seeking to bring teens (in 8th-12th grade) 

together around organized activities, to 

promote learning, fellowship, growth, and 

responsibility. Goals include instilling a 

strong sense of Jewish identity, expanding 

understanding of Conservative Judaism, 

embracing Jewish education, and 

encouraging involvement in and beyond the 

synagogue through involvement in such 

things as leadership opportunities, social 

action and Torah. 

In December we had an amazing “Guess 

Who’s Coming to Shabbas?” dinner at 

Temple Sinai where we had over 20 USYers 

come out for great food and an inspiring 

Ruach (spirit) session! We also had our 2nd 

annual Great Latke Taste Test that drew a 

great crowd of USYers to try out salmon 

croquettes, sweet potato and plain potato 

latkes with toppings like whipped cream, 

wasabi, ketchup, and apple sauce. A special 

thanks to Men In The Kitchen for their 

delicious creations! 

Our chapter encourages our USYers to 

take an active role to help grow our teens 

into young vibrant Jewish leaders in our 

congregation. A special thanks to our teen 

leaders from our congregation that make up 

our chapter board: Marissa Reale, Jesse 

Pearlmutter, Josh Kramer, Matt Weiss, 

Mindy Rosenthal, Phil Massey, Leo 

Massey, Aaron Bernstein, Steven Meres, 

Benj Stern, and Brett Spike. 

Upcoming events include volunteering at 

the Daddy Daughter Dance on February 9th, 

a volunteer opportunity which is being 

co-chaired by Jesse Pearlmutter and Phil 

Massey. There is also an area-wide shul-in 

and ski trip planned for February 17th. 

Details will be emailed out soon! Also in 

the works is a co-chapter Game Night with a 

date and details to follow.

Childhood Memories 

When I was a child, I would study the 

Shamash (sextant), Mr. Cohen, at our local 

synagogue. He would stand at the front of 

our small synagogue, wrapped in talit, and 

he would pray to God. I was intrigued and 

deeply moved by the way in which he stood 

before God and prayed. I knew nothing 

about Mr. Cohen’s character, nor did I 

know anything about his family. However, 

as children often do, I conjured up Mr. 

Cohen’s world, a world that probably had 

little resemblance to Mr. Cohen’s reality. I 

liked that Mr. Cohen, the sextant of my 

synagogue, also wanted to reach God and to 

feel close to the Ultimate. 

We tend to focus on school and parents 

as the main avenues by which to educate 

and encourage spirituality and faith in our 

children. However, as I have experienced 

firsthand, witnessing people in prayer and 

witnessing reverence to God can create a 

profound and lasting impression in 

childhood. As such, community prayer can 

supplement and enhance the avenues by 

which we encourage healthy spiritual 

development and identity formation. 

Many of our families attend the newly 

established family services called Kenesset 

Mishpacha. The participating families are 

introducing their children to the powerful 

experience of community prayer and 

togetherness.

also enjoyed an evening Chanukah party 

sponsored by our PTO. Cantor and Rabbi 

led us in song and prayer as we lit the 

Nature Center. They will share a wonderful 

Tu B’Shevat and Hibernation program with 

all of our students.

four-year-old classes. He will share his Monique Munro-Harris 

Dresher estates and entertained them with 

artwork with the children and do a special Jason Rothman 

songs and received a snack of freshly baked 

project with them.

Camp Maccabee registration is open and we 

are eagerly looking forward to another 

fantastic summer! We invite you to come 

and explore a safe and nurturing 

environment for your child. Camp starts on 

June 24 th and runs through August 16 th . We 

are excited to welcome back Miss Monica, 

our music specialist, for our weekly music 

exploration. Many of our counselors have 

been with us for several years, which helps 

to maintain consistency for all of our 

campers. We anticipate many exciting 

programs like Hatman, Pony rides, and 

Rak-Dan Israeli dancing. Summer is just 

around the corner, so don’t delay…contact 

Laurie Matez, camp director, with any and

Aaron is an 8 th grade student at 

Wissahickon Middle School. He began 

his Jewish education at Temple Emanuel 

Pre-School in Roanoke, Virginia and is 

currently attending Gratz Hebrew High 

School at Temple Sinai. Aaron is an 

athlete and a performer, who enjoys 

singing in chorus/choir, playing clarinet 

in band, and playing saxophone in the 

WMS competition jazz band - Black 

Dog. As an athlete, Aaron competes in 

baseball, wrestling, and cross country. 

He starred as Charley in Lower 

Gwynedd’s “Willy Wonka”. He also 

enjoys being a member of the 

Wissahickon Middle School’s select 

chorus and was a member of Temple 

Sinai’s Junior Choir for 5 years under 

the great patience of Cantor Freedman. 

Aaron has been participating in various 

charities through the years. He 

volunteers at Manna on Main Street 

serving food to needy families in the 

North Wales area. Additionally, he 

participated in the kids backpack 

program packaging meals for at-need 

children to take home from school on 

the weekends. He has performed for the 

elderly to bring the gift of song for those 

who cannot attend performances outside 

of their nursing facility. For his Bar 

Mitzvah project, Aaron participated in 

the American Diabetes Association’s 

Tour de Cure riding for family members 

with Diabetes. Sharing in his Simcha 

are his parents Frank and Ketty 

Kaminsky, his siblings Nicole and 

Sarah, his grandparents Dr. Roger Vega, 

Dr. Ketty Gonzalez, and his great 

grandmother Ketty Ruiz, and many 

aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Sarah is a 7th grader at Sandy Run Middle 

School in Dresher. She began her Jewish 

education at the Terri Lynne Lokoff Early 

Learning Center and Tiferet Bet Israel 

synagogue. Sarah has been involved in 

Temple Sinai's community as a member of 

the Junior Choir for three years and a 

member of Yad Squad for two years. Twice, 

she has read Torah before the congregation. 

Sarah loves animals, reading, horseback 

riding and playing video games. She is 

currently rehearsing for her school's musical, 

"The Little Mermaid." She enjoys summers 

at Camp Galil, and this year will mark her 

fourth summer there. 

Sarah is a generous, loving and caring young 

lady. For her Bat Mitzvah project, she 

volunteered at Pegasus Riding Academy in 

the Northeast. It is a non-profit organization 

that helps mentally and physically disabled 

children through the use of therapy horses. 

Sarah interacted with the children and was a 

side walker during the lessons to make sure 

that the children didn't fall off. Sarah also 

did barn chores and provided the horses with 

water and treats. 

Sarah will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah 

with her proud parents, Charice and David 

Peckman. Also sharing this special day with 

her will be her grandparents, aunts, uncles, 

cousins and many friends. Sarah's Hebrew 

name is Yosefa Me'ira, having been named 

after her grandfather, Joseph Chait and her 

great grandmother, Marjorie Buerger. They 

would have loved to be with Sarah on this 

special day. 

Brendan Cantos,

March 2, 2013 

Brendan is a 7 th grade student at 

Wissahickon Middle School. He began his 

Jewish education at age 2 and has been a 

student at the Temple Sinai Religious 

School for the past 7 years. He has been an 

active member of the Junior Choir for 5 

years. 

Brendan is a strong student who loves to 

learn and has an innate ability to retain 

knowledge and apply what he has learned. 

He is an avid runner who runs for his 

school as well as the Ambler Olympic Club. 

Brendan recently placed 33 rd out of 99 

twelve-year old runners in his 3k event at 

the Cross Country National Youth 

Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. 

Brendan also enjoys playing soccer, 

swimming, traveling, listening to rock 

music and playing the guitar. He has 

attended Pinemere Camp for the past three 

summers. 

For Brendan’s Bar Mitzvah project, he 

combined his love of running with his 

desire to give back to the community by 

hosting a drive on behalf of Cradles to 

Crayons (C2C) to collect athletic shoes for 

needy children in the Philadelphia area. 

Through Brendan’s efforts at Temple Sinai 

and elsewhere, he has collected 900+ pairs 

of shoes and counting. Having volunteered 

at C2C and JRA on numerous occasions, 

Brendan has a real appreciation for the 

importance of philanthropy and he intends 

to make his shoe drive an annual event. 

Brendan is excited about becoming a Bar 

Mitzvah and is eager to take this first step of 

his journey into Jewish adulthood. He will 

be celebrating his special day with his very 

proud parents, Andy and Ilene, his sister 

Kylie, his grandparents, aunts, uncles, 

cousins and friends who will be traveling 

from near and far.

Jared is a 7th grader at Saligman Middle 

School. He began his Jewish education in 

preschool at Adath Jeshurun. Jared enjoys 

participating in many activities at Temple 

Sinai such as The Brotherhood, Makor and 

Kadima and Cantor’s Jr. Choir. 

Jared is involved in many school clubs and 

sports, such as baseball, basketball, and 

ping pong club. In school, Jared took part in 

Reading Olympics for the last 4 years 

including being a captain in 5th grade. Jared 

was a key member of the 2012 gold medal 

winning Maccabi Mid Atlantic Regional 

12U baseball team. He also went to 

Cooperstown, New York with the Abington 

travel baseball team and participated in the 

Dreams Park Tournament. In basketball, he 

participates on the Varsity team for 

Saligman Middle School. He has 

participated in the Upper Dublin township 

basketball league for the past 5 years. 

Jared is a well-rounded young man who 

participates in charity work. Jared has 

chosen to assist leading the seniors for 

Friday night services at Dresher Estates 

with Flossie Albert and Cantor Freedman as 

part of his Mitzvah project. He often stayed 

after the service to help some of the seniors 

get to their dinner. He has also begun 

collecting baseball and softball equipment 

for the charity called Pitch-In for Baseball 

which he will do throughout the 2013 

baseball season. Jared has devoted time to 

helping the JRA and Cradles to Crayons as 

a volunteer. 

Jared is very happy to share this special day 

with his parents, Shelly and Howard, his 

sister, Isabella, and his entire family. He is 

also happy to share with his friends and the 

Temple Sinai congregation.

Carly Spike is a 7 th grade student at Sandy 

Run Middle School. She and her family 

have been members of Temple Sinai since 

1999. Carly has enjoyed many activities at 

Temple Sinai especially Rosh Hodesh. She 

finds that spending time with her friends 

from Temple Sinai is very important and 

believes there is a bond with these friends 

that will always remain strong no matter 

where these friends are. 

Carly has been involved in gymnastics 

since she was 4 years old. When she was 8 

years old she began competitive gymnastics 

and has made a very strong commitment to 

her gymnastics team. She currently spends 

5 days a week training and she hopes to 

take her passion to a collegiate level when 

the time comes. 

Carly spends her time during the summer in 

a variety of ways. She has been a camper at 

Willow Grove Day Camp since the age of 4 

and this coming summer will be a CIT. In 

addition, she has spent the last 3 summers 

going to International Gymnastics Camp for 

a 1 week session. Each year she has met 

and trained with past Olympians and this 

year hopes to meet members of the “Fab 

Five” from the 2012 Olympics! 

When Carly has free time, she enjoys 

spending time it with her family and 

friends. She also has been involved in many 

charitable activities including JRA and 

Relay for Life. For her mitzvah project, she 

sold Sports Bras. The proceeds went to the 

Sharsheret Organization which helps 

support women helping other women who 

are going through the treatment process of 

breast cancer. 

Carly is very excited to celebrate her Bat 

Mitzvah in March with her Mom, Dad, and 

brother Brett. Also her grandparents, aunts, 

uncles and many cousins!

Samantha is a 7 th grader at Sandy Run 

Middle School. She began her Jewish 

education at the Ann Newman Preschool at 

age two as well as Camp Macabee. 

Samantha remains friends with many 

people she met from the preschool years. 

Samantha enjoys participating in many 

activities at the synagogue including the 

Kadima youth group and Rosh Hodesh. 

Samantha enjoys many activities including 

participating in the school play as well as 

being part of the chorus. Samantha enjoys 

reading, swimming, music, the beach, 

spending time with her friends and family. 

In her spare time since a young age 

Samantha can always be found in the 

kitchen cooking up great dishes. Samantha 

loves dogs and when her family was ready 

to purchase a dog she encouraged us to 

rescue one to provide a loving home. Her 

dog yoshi is very thankful for Samantha. 

Samantha is a very caring person who 

enjoyed her mitzvah project at Cradles for 

Crayons. Samantha’s whole family 

participated in the project on multiple 

weekends helping to put together essential 

items needed for young children. Samantha 

looked forward to each weekend as she saw 

the strong need to help those less fortunate. 

In addition Samantha helped to clean out 

her closet to find items she could donate 

that would be helpful for the children in 

need. 

She is happy to share her special day with 

her Mother and Father, Beth and Mitchell 

Chadrow, her sister Marissa, her 

grandparents Janet Chadrow, Beverly 

Miller, Harry and Carol Miller along with 

many special cousins, Aunts and Uncles. 

There will be special memories of her 

grandfather Steve and great grandmother 

Ann for who she is named for as she stands 

on the bimah.

The Cissy Plotnick Preschool Scholarship Fund 

was established as a tribute to 

Cissy Plotnick’s years of service in the Ann 

Newman Preschool of Temple Sinai. The 

Scholarship funds will help offset preschool 

tuition costs for families who demonstrate a 

significant financial need and would like to send 

their children to Temple Sinai’s Preschool. 

Applications are welcome from both Temple 

Sinai members and nonmembers. 

All donations to the Scholarship Fund, small or

exactly the way you wanted. 

Temple Sinai has available gravesites at nearby King David Memorial Park in 

Bensalem, PA at reasonable costs for its members and their families. For more

“Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas” 

Still “Trending” at Temple Sinai

It is almost unheard of that a synagogue 

program reaches over 50% participation, but 

that’s exactly what’s happening with our new 

“Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas?” 

program. 

Featured recently in the Philadelphia 

Inquirer, calls are coming in now from other 

synagogues and organizations who want to 

replicate it in their own community. 

“It’s been a real thrill to see how viral this 

has become,” said Debbie Albert, who started 

the program in memory of her dad, Bernie 

Albert, z’l. “The magic formula seems to be 

that congregants get to celebrate Shabbat in 

their own homes and in their own way. It’s a 

no-brainer in terms of creating meaningful 

Jewish memories for our families while 

building our Temple Sinai community.” 

The goal of the program is to reach full 

congregational participation by June. 

Success will be measured by how many 

people host, are guests, or are even invited 

but can’t attend a Shabbas dinner at another 

congregant’s home. 

Even George’s Dreshertown Shop n’Bag 

is now on board. Store owner, George 

Andrigian, and manager, Kevin Carlin, 

longtime friends of the Albert family, have 

agreed to put Empire kosher chicken on sale 

for the weeks of the “Guess Who” dinners. 

(If you see them in the market, be sure to let 

them know how much this means to you!)
