T
his handbook is intended to help you become familiar with some of the services
and programs the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs and its Middle Atlantic
Region can provide to you and your membership. The degree to which your
Men's Club and synagogue can benefit from membership in the FJMC Middle
Atlantic Region depends on your ability to take advantage of our programs and
services. The directory is intended to provide you with the contact information for the
leadership in our Region. Its accuracy depends on each of us to update the information
that is pertinent to our club.
Just as a reminder, the directory is for use within our organization and not to be
disseminated for any other purpose.
Membership retention and expansion programs
Informative newspapers and newsletters for Men's Club members and leaders
Convention: Every two years, member Men's Clubs throughout North America gather to
learn, teach, and be recognized for their achievements. At convention Torch Awards are
presented to clubs to recognize outstanding programs. They are a valuable programming
and membership tool for every Men's Club which takes the opportunity to use this
valuable and practical resource. Summaries of winning entries are sent to every club
president. The convention is the wellspring from which most of the following resources
initially flow.
Leadership Training Seminars: FJMC/MAR is committed to providing a significant
number of leadership training seminars each year on the following topics: Membership,
Motivation, Fund Raising, Programming, and Countering Hebrew Christianity. Learn what
your club can do to stop the activities of Jews for Jesus and other missionary
organizations from preying on your children and community. All affiliated Men's Clubs
should have received one free copy of the FJMC's Countering Hebrew Christianity
Manual. Also available is a Club Officers Manual that provides guidelines for building
and maintaining a successful Men's Club.
Hearing Men's Voices: A Program Series Focusing on Men's Issues. The first
installment, entitled Our Fathers Ourselves, explores men's roles in the Jewish family and
provides programming to help men better understand and strengthen their relationships
with their fathers and sons. The second installment discusses health issues that concern
Men and will provide tips on how to live a healthier and happier life. The third installment
focuses on Men's spiritual lives and examines the nature of our relationships with G-d.
The benefits of membership extend beyond the programs and services you receive.
Individuals can gain a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction through participation in their
Men's Club and become more sensitive to the Conservative Movement agenda.
Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life
The camaraderie and fellowship which arises from involvement in your individual
Men's Club extends to your membership in the Middle Atlantic Region of the
International Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs. Knowing that there are men similar to
you and clubs similar to yours, welcoming you into the greater community of Jewish
Men's Clubs, fosters a sense of being a part of a greater organization with common
goals.
Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life
Our Men's Clubs support communities in need. Special appeals have helped to rebuild
FJMC communities devastated by Hurricane Andrew and have assisted to strengthen
our Movement's Masorti institutions in Israel and Europe.
Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life
This past year, FJMC members supported religious pluralism in Israel by sending
delegates to the World Zionist Congress to represent our growing Movement.
ATTENTION CLUB PRESIDENTS: Your club may be among the next clubs
selected to name a student to be awarded a Youth Scholarship Award.
Background: The MAR Annual Youth Scholarship program was established in 1958 to
memorialize MAR leaders Rabbi Jerome Labovitz and Irving Cohen. In subsequent years
the names of Morton Tabas, Sidney Slepner and Milton Greenfield were added.
Additional names will be added as appropriate.
Procedure: The clubs eligible for the awards are selected, in turn, from a complete roster
of all clubs. The next awards will be presented at the regional closing dinner on Sunday,
June 13.
If your club is among the next clubs to be chosen, you will be advised, by letter no later
than April 30, 1998. You will be asked to nominate a student graduating from your
President of the Men's Club. The selection will be based upon Scholarship, Leadership
and/or Financial need. The student selected must pledge to use the monetary award to
continue his studies in a higher school of Hebrew Education or Ramah. You will be
required to furnish the name of the awardee and the educational institution that the
of the rotation list for future years.
Presentation: The awardee will be invited to attend the MAR closing event at which time
the awardee will receive public recognition and a check made payable to the learning
institution designated by the awardee.
Golden Kippah Youth Campaign
The Golden Kippah Youth Campaign is the Middle Atlantic Region’s fund-raising
activity to benefit the campers of Camp Ramah in the Pocono’s.
Research has shown that one factor influencing the lifetime commitment to being
Jewish is attendance at a Jewish overnight camp.
The Golden Kippah Youth Campaign began in 1981. Over the years, the Concert
has raised more than ONE MILLION DOLLARS and is a model for similar campaigns
across the country. (Do the members of your synagogue know that its Men’s Club is
part of an organization that has contributed so much to Camp Ramah) MAR has
achieved nationwide recognition for its work on the campaign.
The Campaign depends on your support, and your congregation support. There
are a number of ways to provide that support - we have a variety of Patron levels and
an Ad journal. More information will be sent to you during the year.
Currently, the funds benefit MAR projects at Camp Ramah in the Pocono’s. This
year’s funds will go to support the construction of the new SPORTS FIELDS. Over the
past 25 years our efforts have provided for an INDOOR SPORTS ACTIVITIES
CENTER, renovation of ALL the CAMPERS’ BUNKS and money for SCHOLARSHIPS.
We look forward to your support for the GOLDEN KIPPAH CONCERT!
