It was less than 4 months ago, on 

October 20, 2010, that I received an 

email and a phone message from a 

representative of the National 

Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), 

also known as Be The Match. The 

email and the call came as a bit of a 

shock. It had been a number of 

years since I had registered with the 

NMDP at a marrow registry drive 

which we held at Temple Sinai, and 

certainly more than 20 years since I 

had first had my marrow tested as a 

rabbinical student in New York. 

Now, out-of-the-blue, I was told 

that I was a potential match for a 

patient in need of a marrow 

transplant. The representative to 

whom I spoke on October 20 had 

one question for me: Was I still 

interested in being a donor? 

―Yes,‖ I answered. 

I would need to go through some 

further testing – some blood would 

have to be drawn – and to provide 

some information about my medical 

history and my present condition. 

Was I prepared to do that? ―Of 

course,‖ I responded. 

Later that week, I went to a 

medical facility where several vials 

of blood were taken from my arm. 

It would be a number of weeks, I 

was told, before I would know if I 

was, in fact, a match for a patient in 

need of stem cells. 

On January 3, 2011, I learned 

that I was a match. Information 

about Peripheral Blood Stem Cell 

Donation was on its way and I 

would need to review it and sign-off 

on a number of forms before going 

for a physical the following week at 

Hahnemann University Hospital. 

Time was of the essence and so my 

donation date was scheduled right 

away, as were the four days of 

injections that would precede my 

stem cell donation. 

As you can well imagine, I had a 

great many questions about the 

process, and between the literature 

I was sent, the representative from 

Be The Match, and the medical staff 

at Hahnemann, all of my questions 

were answered. There were only 2 

unknowns: 1) Just how would my 

body react to the filgrastim 

injections (most people, I was 

informed, experience some achiness 

in their bones from this drug which 

is meant to stimulate increased stem 

cell production), and 2) Would I be 

donating stem cells on the date 

assigned for my donation (a number 

of factors related to the recipient 

could have potentially ended or 

postponed the need for my 

donation). But I was committed to 

the process and prepared myself for 

whatever the outcome might be. 

On Thursday, February 3, I 

returned to Hahnemann for the first 

in a series of five injections of 

filgrastim. A visiting nurse was sent 

to our home for the injections I 

needed on the second, third, and 

fourth days. 

Monday, February 7, was the 

day of my last injection and my 

donation. I arrived at Hahnemann at 

7:15 AM and by 8:15 AM I was in 

a hospital bed with a needle in each 

arm. From my left arm the blood 

was extracted and the stem cells 

were separated from it before the 

remaining components of my blood 

were returned into my right arm. 

Was it painful? Not in the least. I 

have donated blood on numerous 

occasions and this was no different, 

aside from the fact that as blood 

was leaving one arm, I also had 

blood returning into the other. Both 

Shira and a nurse were constantly 

nearby during the six-hour donation 

and I was able to eat, drink, and 

carry on a conversation. The 

hospital staff could not have been 

more attentive or more helpful and 

the time went by rather quickly. 

Unlike the times when I have 

donated blood, a gentleman arrived 

as my donation was concluding. He 

would be responsible for 

transporting my stem cells to their 

final destination. My contact person 

at the NMDP also came to the 

hospital to see how I was feeling 

and to let me know what I should 

and should not be doing during the 

first week following my donation. 

He also followed up with phone 

calls during the week to check on 

my condition. Other than feeling a 

bit more tired than usual, I have felt 

great! It is an interesting experience 

to look back on and I find myself 

wondering about the recipient of 

my stem cells. I am anxious to hear 

how he is doing, though I know I 

won’t learn anything about his 

condition for at least 6 weeks. 

Was I nervous or frightened 

about the process? I can honestly 

say that I wasn’t. I reasoned that my 

being a match was part of God’s 

plan and I felt protected every step 

of the way. As my donation began, 

I recited a prayer. Not a prayer in 

which I asked God to watch over 

me during my donation, but a 

prayer that allowed me to thank 

God for the opportunity to help 

another human being.

As Executive Vice President, my 

m a j o r r e s p o n s i b i l i t y 

(constitutionally) is to prepare and 

preside over the monthly Temple 

Sinai Board of Directors 

Meeting. Eleven times during the 

year on the third Wednesday of the 

month, the ―Board‖ meets, 

discusses, resolves, votes, and 

approves the business of the 

congregation. In May of each year 

the Annual Congregational 

Meeting/Election replaces the 

―Board Meeting‖. At most 

meetings the attendance can swell 

to 60 (9 officers, 28 elected 

members, Past Presidents, Life 

Members and Professional Staff). 

The process of preparing for the 

meeting starts with the request for 

reports from our Standing 

Committees, and Appointed 

Committees (Ad Hoc). Those who 

respond and want a place on the 

agenda will provide a written report 

to me so that I can distribute the 

report to each member of the 

―Board‖ prior to the meeting. This 

process has helped shorten the 

meetings and more importantly 

given each member the time to 

review the report and has made the 

discussions during the meeting 

more meaningful. 

After receiving the reports, I will 

generate an agenda, keeping in 

mind the number of reports and the 

time constraints for each report in 

relationship to the entire 

evening. We try to conduct Shul 

business within a 2 hour time frame 

(we are Jewish and sometimes the 

50-60 people in attendance have 

90-100 opinions) but often the 

meetings will end too late in the 

night. 

A typical agenda will contain a 

D’var Torah, approval of the 

minutes from last month, and 

several Committee Reports. In 

addition we will almost always hear 

reports from the President, 

Executive Director, Director of 

C o n g r e g a t i o n a l L e a r n i n g , 

Treasurer, Cantor, and Rabbi. 

Among the many committees, we 

often hear from are the Fundraising, 

Housing, and Membership. Periodic 

reports are scheduled on the agenda 

from the Religious, Youth 

Activities and Nominating & 

Governance Committees. The 

―Board‖ is kept apprised of issues 

concerning the building, the 

schools, membership and finances. 

As the presiding officer at the 

meetings and with the President, we 

are always conscious of the 

importance of conducting the 

meeting with order and meaningful 

dialogue in a respectful and ―up‖ 

environment. We constantly request 

ideas to improve the process.

Personally, it wasn’t necessary 

that I know the recipient of my 

donation, and, in fact the recipient 

and the donor are not permitted to 

know each other’s identities. While 

I am likely to receive an occasional 

update on the status of the recipient, 

we will have no contact with one 

another for the first year. After a 

year’s time, if we would like to 

become known to one another, an 

introduction can take place. 

Since my donation, I have 

prayed that this individual will be 

returned to good health. And while 

his recovery is something that I 

wish for each and every day, my 

other great hope is that others will 

add their names to the marrow 

donor registry, making it possible 

for additional lives to be saved.

V’chol ha’mikayem nefesh achat 

ma’alim alav k’eeloo ki’yem olam 

maleh – ―One who saves a life is 

credited with saving an entire 

world‖ (Mishna Sanhedrin 4:5).

First-ever Daddy B’nai Daughter Mitzvah Dance a Huge Success

Brian is currently a 7th grade 

student at Sandy Run Middle 

School. He began his Jewish 

education at Temple Sinai's Anne 

Newman Preschool and also 

attended Camp Maccabee. 

Brian is passionate about 

tennis and soccer and can be found 

on the tennis court several days a 

week. He enjoys playing travel 

soccer and also is a member of the 

Sandy Run soccer team. Brian is a 

talented musician and a dedicated 

guitarist. Brian enjoys spending his 

summers with his camp friends at 

Camp Chipinaw in the Catskills. 

For his Mitzvah Project, Brian is 

holding an "evening of tennis" at 

the Upper Dublin Sports Center to 

support the Israel Tennis Centers. 

The ITC, Israel's largest social 

service agency for children, serves 

over 10,000 children weekly 

through a variety of programs. 

T h e s e p r o g r a m s a d d r e s s 

development and social needs, 

including coexistence programs 

f o r A r a b a n d J e w i s h 

children. Brian also conducted a 

tennis racquet drive to donate 

racquets to deserving tennis 

programs in the Philadelphia area. 

He partnered with the United 

States Tennis Association Middle 

States for support. Brian shares his 

Simcha with his parents, Jill and 

Jeffrey, sister Hannah, and 

grandparents Suzanne Landy, Judy 

Hampton and Paul and Sally 

Cohen, as well as his extended 

family and friends.

Jake is a 7th grade student at the 

Robert Saligman Middle School of 

Perelman Jewish Day School. He 

grew up attending Temple Sinai’s 

Ann Newman Preschool, and has 

attended Camp Harlam in the 

Poconos for the past 4 summers. 

Jake’s interests include playing 

competitive soccer for Lower Merion 

Soccer Club and Saligman 

Middle School. He also enjoys 

playing basketball and baseball, as 

well as skiing, traveling and 

hanging out with friends. 

For Jake’s Mitzvah Project, he is 

volunteering for The Friendship 

Circle, a local organization that 

assists children with special needs 

and their families. Jake also 

volunteers with his family at the 

Jewish Relief Agency, where he 

packs and delivers food to Jewish 

People in need around the 

Philadelphia area. 

Jake will be celebrating his Bar 

Mitzvah with his proud parents, 

Tracy & George, his sisters Rachel 

and Sarah, his brother Eli and his 

f o u r grandparen ts, S andi 

Hockfield, Bill Hockfield and 

Linda & Herbert Gordon.

Rebecca is a 7 th grade student at 

Sandy Run Middle School. She 

began her Jewish education at the 

Anne Newman Preschool and is 

currently in the Religious School at 

Temple Sinai. She is also part of 

Rosh Hodesh – It’s a Girl Thing. 

Rebecca enjoys theater, music, art 

and sports (particularly skiing, 

swimming and softball). She has 

performed in a variety of shows 

with the Temple Sinai Players 

(Wizard of Oz and Big, The 

Musical), at camp (Beauty and the 

Beast and A Bunch of Broadway) 

and, most recently, with the Fox 

Chase Actors’ Guild (Seussical). 

For her mitzvah project, Rebecca 

volunteered at the Jewish Relief 

Agency, helping to pack and 

deliver food to families in need. 

Additionally, she is planning to 

help raise money for JAFCO, the 

only Jewish orphanage in the U.S., 

by selling flowers for the cast 

during the Temple Sinai 

production of Annie. 

Rebecca is celebrating her Bat 

Mitzvah with her parents, Beth and 

David, her brother Samuel and her 

sister Sarah. She is also excited 

about sharing this simcha with her 

great grandfather, Abe Pennock, 

her grandparents, Carol and Paul 

Cohen, Ellen and Allen Joseph and 

Joan Joseph, and her aunts, uncles, 

cousins and friends!

Allie Novey is a 7th grade student 

at Sandy Run Middle School. She 

began her Jewish education at 

Temple Sinai at the Ann Newman 

Preschool and has continued on 

with the Temple Sinai Religious 

School. 

Allie enjoys spending time with 

friends and playing many sports: 

soccer, basketball, softball, and 

tennis to name a few. She also 

enjoys spending the summer at 

C a m p C h i p i n a w i n t h e 

Catskills. For Allie's Mitzvah 

project, which is very near and 

dear to her, she has visited and will 

continue to visit the Albert 

E i n s t ein M e d i cal C ancer 

Treatment room. She bakes 

homemade chocolate chip cookies 

and hands them out to the patients 

during their treatment. This 

project has been especially close to 

Allie's heart as her grandmother 

had been a patient and knew she 

would have smiled upon this 

herself. 

Sharing in Allie's Simcha are her 

parents, Sharon and Stuart, her 

sister Jana, and her grandparents, 

Abby and Melvin Novey.

Programs Highlights 

The Amazing Robots of Israel by Andrew Demchick 

Dr. Amir Shapiro, Director of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s Robotics Lab and one of the world’s leading robotics experts, 

was a recent visitor to Temple Sinai, bringing several of his robotic friends for a program entitled ―the Amazing Robots of Israel‖. The program 

was co-sponsored by the American Friends of Ben-Gurion University, Temple Sinai, Federation’s Center for Israel and Overseas, and 

the Kehillot of Bux-Mont and Old York Road. Dr. Shapiro develops robots that benefit humankind. His work with the Israel Defense 

Forces (IDF) improves the safety and security of Israel and those who protect its people, and his work in other areas impacts crucial 

industries such as agriculture, medicine and defense. Dr. Shapiro’s robots climb walls, scale slippery surfaces, dive underwater and navigate 

through tunnels too small or inaccessible for people. A crowd of over 100 of all ages saw robots that can balance on two wheels or a ball, 

climb metallic surfaces, hover and slither like snakes.

OMG! Oh My Gosh! What a WET and WILD 21 hours for FUN 

we had! First, I would like to thank all of you who have helped so 

much to make this past sleepover such a success. There were 18 

volunteers for the Water Park, over 20 for the 

9pm-12pm supervision and ice cream shift, 8 adults 

and me sleeping over and over 30 volunteers for 

breakfast and the Mitzvah activity. I may create the 

plan but all of you have helped contribute to the 

execution, success and smiling faces on your own 

child and the 120+ children throughout the sleepover. 

This is truly a community event! I believe the 

socializing and gathering of all of us "hanging out" 

together at synagogue will be a lasting memory for 

all. Special thanks to Lisa Block, Andrea Domsky, 

Francine Listman, Laurie & David Matez, Jen Sher, 

David Weiss and David Monblatt who braved the floor 

and lack of sleep to be there for any child who had a 

concern while sleeping. 

In case you hadn’t heard yet, the "special events" of the night 

included a magical and mind reading experience for the 3-5 th 

graders, just mind reading for the 6 th & 7 th graders and RUMBA for

all! The kids seemed to enjoy both activities. Also, our Mitzvah 

projects were so successful as we created over 80 packages of gifts 

for the Kisses for Kyle foundation and 225Breakfast Bags for Cook 

For A Friend. My goal was 50 packages for Kisses 

for Kyle and 150 Breakfast bags for Cook For a 

Friend but our community shined once again 

exceeding what I thought was even possible! Thanks 

to those who financially contributed to the mitzvah 

project and donated many items!

look for Sleepover 2011. The music has been 

disabled but just watching the fun and smiles had by 

all is so awesome. Be sure to definitely see the last 

moments when the group after the Mitzvah project 

came together for a group shot! Words can't express 

how I felt at that moment! You all help to make my 

job so internally rewarding. I feel it deep in my heart! Thanks!

Daddy Daughter Dance 2011 - Perspectives from a Volunteer by David Kepniss 

Although I cannot recall how I came to 

be the original chairman for the DDD, as 

soon as it was over last year, I knew I had 

to give it another run. This year, I was 

determined to apply lessons learned and to 

recruit other Dads to share in the powerful 

experience I had. There is tremendous joy, 

satisfaction and pride that comes with 

making a successful event at Temple Sinai. 

Recruiting volunteers for the DDD is pretty 

simple. I have made wonderful friends 

within the synagogue that have young 

daughters of their own, so all I had to do 

was tap into our shared desire to be great 

Dads. After all, this event is as much for 

our own daughters as it is for the Men’s 

Club, our synagogue and the larger 

community. I knew these guys would be 

committed, and they did not let me down. 

The secret to making any event a 

success is to plan way ahead. With our 

date reserved at August’s calendar meeting 

and the team assembled by October, our 

first order of business was to choose a pub 

for a planning meeting! I think everyone 

immediately recognized that the 2011 

DDD was going to be as much about the 

journey as the destination. All meetings 

were held at pubs and no official business 

was discussed until the second round of 

beers. This was our kind of committee! 

For the most part, everyone took 

ownership of their individual duties and we 

came together as a team early on. This was 

invaluable when faced with obstacles like 

date conflicts, technical difficulties and the 

announcement of Upper Dublin Parks & 

Rec’s 1 st Annual Father Daughter Dance to 

be held the weekend after ours. 

Competition served to galvanize our efforts 

and we surpassed our ticket sales goal of 

200 attendees. 

When the day of the dance finally 

arrived, all was on track. However, I had 

underestimated my own daughter’s 

anticipation. She could barely contain her 

excitement all day. As far as she was 

concerned, her daddy was making her a 

―royal ball.‖ Regardless of the dance’s 

outcome, I knew all the effort was worth it 

just to see her so happy and excited. 

The dance was pure bliss. My daughter, 

like all the other girls, was illuminated with 

joy amidst the magical, star-lit night 

decorations. Instead of venturing off with 

friends, she never wanted leave my side 

and felt impatient for the next slow dance. 

Looking around the crowded dance floor, it 

was obvious that fathers were smitten with 

their little girls. Some lifted them high and 

carried them through dances, while others 

enjoyed the tight bear-hugs. With iphones 

away, daughters were the focus of every 

Dad’s attention. The smiles in the 

commemorative photos resting on each 

table told the whole story and would 

continue to for years to come. I’d say the 

DDD hit a home run! 

I got so much from that evening, as did 

the whole DDD team. I not only enjoyed 

the opportunity to share a few special hours 

with my little girl, but it was a pleasure 

being surrounded by so many other Dads 

enjoying the same. I look forward to the 

next DDD and encouraging my peers to get 

involved with this and other, rewarding 

volunteer opportunities at Temple Sinai.
