Our Mission
Independence Center is committed to providing a comprehensive
system of high quality programs and services that assists adults in
the St. Louis metropolitan area with serious and persistent mental
illnesses to live and work in the community, independently and with
dignity.
To accomplish its mission, the Center promotes rehabilitation and
employment, provides educational, social and housing opportunities
and offers training in its approaches to community-based care.
As part of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the BJC Health System, the
center provides clinical, case management and partial
hospitalization services.
Mental Illness Facts
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's
thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily
functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental
illnesses are disorders of the brain that often result in a diminished
capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Examples of serious mental illnesses include major depression,
schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The good news about mental
illness is that recovery is possible.
Here are some important facts about mental illness and recovery:
• Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders. They
cannot be overcome through "will power" and are not related to a
person's "character" or intelligence.
• Without treatment the consequences of mental illness for the
individual and society are staggering: unnecessary disability,
unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate
incarceration, suicide and wasted lives; The economic cost of
untreated mental illness is more than 100 billion dollars each year
in the United States.
• The best treatments for serious mental illnesses today are highly
effective; between 70 and 90 percent of individuals have significant
reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life with a
combination of pharmacological and psychosocial treatments and
supports.
In addition to medication, psychosocial rehabilitation can assist with
recovery. Resources for transportation, diet, exercise, sleep,
friends, and meaningful paid or volunteer activities contribute to
overall health and wellness, including mental illness recovery.

Report to the Community
Spotlight on Independence Center
Dear Friends:
We are very pleased to send you this report on the performance of Independence Center for our fiscal
year ending June 30, 2007.
Independence Center enjoyed successful financial performance in the face of increasingly uncertain
governmental funding streams and experienced growth in our delivery of service to adults with severe and
persistent mental illnesses. Yet these appreciable achievements don't begin to explain what an exciting year
this has been for us organizationally.
The year was filled with anticipation as we prepared to move our two clubhouses toward consolidation in a
spacious and contemporary new facility in St. Louis' Central West End. It was a year of collectively imagining
how life might be there and of pulling together to make truly ambitious dreams come true. It was a time of
foreseeing problems and solving them together before they became our undoing. It was a time for leaving the
familiar and embracing what we might yet be.
As we write this, 100 days into the new fiscal year, we are thrilled by how successfully we have negotiated the
biggest transition in our 27-year history. Attendance is at an all time high and the program has attractive new
elements. But that is another year's story, to be read here one year hence. The glory of 2007 was in the doing,
and much that was done was without precedent.
Our "Rebuilding Futures, Restoring Lives" Capital Campaign, under the chairmanship of Senator and Mrs. John
Danforth, brought levels of support from our friends that we could only once have dreamed of, including three
commitments of $500,000 each from the Sydney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. John Maguire, and the
Gertrude and William A. Bernoudy Foundation. Many other loyal friends made commitments that have taken
the campaign past the $2.3 million mark against a $3.5 million goal.
We broadened our reach into the St. Louis community with the addition of five new members to our board of
directors, we strengthened our relationships with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of
Medicine, and became significantly more active in mental health policy development at the state and regional
levels. We increased our level of involvement within the International Center for Clubhouse Development,
and began sharing a hard-earned expertise in wellness and employment programs with colleague agencies
across Missouri.
Most critically, we provided our members with the crucial life supports they need to regain
self-determination and independence. Whether helping them find a job or adequate housing, facilitating
a return to school, averting a medical crisis, managing medications, or pulling out of a spiral of
depression and isolation, we were there when members needed us. And we could only do it because
of the generosity of the donors and friends whom we recognize in this report. We are sincerely grateful
for your investment in our members' lives.

2007 Outcomes
One in five people is affected by mental illness 1 , a disease that does
not discriminate, that strikes every economic, religious, and ethnic
group. Mental illness touches relatives, friends, and colleagues.

This year, a total of 1072 individuals
participated in one or more
Independence Center programs.
Nationally, an average of only 10% of adults with a mental illness
are employed 2 . At Independence Center 38% of members had a
work experience in 2007, a 45% increase over 2006.
We believe everyone should have safe, decent, and affordable
houseing. Approximately 20 - 25% of the adult homeless
population suffers from some form of severe and persistent mental
illness. 3 In 2007, 567 individuals either lived in Center housing or
received housing supports from Center housing.
People with serious mental illnesses die at least 25 years earlier
than the general population. 4 There is a significant correlation
between medications for treatment of mental illnesses and an
increase in risk for Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and
weight gain. 322 individuals utilized the Wellness Center for
exercise and classes in healthy living in 2007.
