We are proud to report on the performance of Independence Center for the fiscal
year ended June 30, 2008. It was truly a year of incredible growth, transforming
change and impressive synergy as all Clubhouse operations and services came
together in our handsome new West End Place facility for the first time.
Independence Center enjoyed success by almost any financial yardstick. Not only did
we operate healthily in the black, we did so in spite of unanticipated expenses
related to our move. We garnered more corporate support than we have ever
previously enjoyed, both for our “Rebuilding Futures, Restoring Lives” Capital Campaign
and in program grants and event sponsorship. And we established an endowment
fund through the designation of proceeds from a benefactor’s generous bequest.
The Capital Campaign received a magnificent challenge from the Danforth Foundation that will match dollar
for dollar all gifts or pledges received by December 31, 2008 up to a total of $500,000. This will enable us to
reach our $3.7 million dollar goal on the anticipated schedule. We are profoundly grateful for this endorsement
of our work.
We had a much-enhanced public relations profile this year, garnering substantial newspaper and TV coverage
of our relocation and grand opening, our members and staff, our programs, and the Clubhouse Shop. Our
“Dancing with the St. Louis Stars” special event was an instant success that brought us into contact with many
new friends and promises to be a signature highlight of social seasons to come.
Of real impact, more than a thousand non-member visitors came to tour the new clubhouse in the first 90
days we were open. Many of those who were most knowledgeable about the mental health field told us they
thought it set a new standard in facilities. Even better, our members love it! Our average daily attendance
continued to grow throughout the year, with younger members finding it particularly appropriate to their needs.
Independence Center became substantially more involved with mental health policy development in fiscal
year 2008. We joined the Missouri Coalition of Community Mental Health Centers, and have been actively
engaged in the Eastern Region Behavioral Health Initiative and the Missouri Transformation program of the
Department of Mental Health. We also partnered with the DMH in training other mental health agencies in
Missouri on wellness programming, under grant support from the Missouri Foundation for Health.
As one of the International Center for Clubhouse Development’s five designated U.S. training bases, we continued
to teach Clubhouse standards and philosophy to colleagues from around the nation and around the world,
including Australia, Canada and Korea. We were also visited by a large delegation of social service professionals
from Russia. These are significant exchanges for our members and staff.
For all these achievements and distinctions, the real success of Independence
Center in this or any year is in transforming the lives of our members as they face
the challenges presented by their mental illness. The challenge might be in finding a
job or a wholesome, affordable place to live. It might be returning to school or
managing a change of medications, or in overcoming the isolation and loneliness
that attend mental illness. Whatever the need, Independence Center is there
to meet it, and we can only do it because of the active concern and generous
support of friends like you.

What is
Independence
Center
Independence Center is an innovative psychiatric
rehabilitation program serving adults with persistent mental
illnesses in the St. Louis community. Independence
Center was founded in 1981 by a group of parents and
concerned friends of people with mental illnesses who
wanted to create a place where their loved ones could
go to find jobs, build friendships and find assistance with
education and living on their own. Independence
Center practices the “clubhouse model” of psychiatric
rehabilitation, which operates according to a philosophy
containing four basic tenets:
Everyone needs to feel connected to a community,
thus the notion of membership is essential
Everyone needs to know that s/he is expected
someplace on a daily basis
Everyone needs to feel needed; that one’s presence is
important to others
Everyone needs to believe that s/he is truly wanted
People who come to the Center are members, not
patients or clients.
Independence Center consists of four programs: West
End Place Clubhouse, Community Care, Residential and
Midwest Psychiatry.
FIRST

Clubhouse model as part of Independence
Center's colleague training program. This was
the first group of colleagues from another
country to visit Independence Center's new
Clubhouse, West End Place. In addition to the
group from Australia, West End Place hosted
groups from Our House in San Antonio as
well as three week training for clubhouses in
Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, Oklahoma,
and Canada. Additionally, the Colleague Training
Coordinator for West End Place and two members
active in the program completed training for
the International Center for Clubhouse
Development (ICCD) faculty. Pictured with

FIRST
Gala Event
In November 2008 Independence Center hosted
its first and largest Gala Event, Dancing with
the St. Louis Stars. Pictured is Debra Bass,
Fashion Editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch
and her professional dancer partner Alex
Borodko who competed against 7 other couples
and were crowned dance champions. The event
was such a success on so many levels that
the second event is scheduled for Feb. 21, 2009
at the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis.

Programs
West End Place Clubhouse
In 2007, Independence Center combined its two
clubhouses into one new 50,000 square foot facility
named West End Place, located at 4245 Forest Park
Avenue in the Central West End neighborhood of St.
Louis. Its contemporary design, increased space and
infusion of the latest technologies offers members
more opportunities than ever before. Members and
staff work together to keep the clubhouse running,
including working in the kitchen, dining room and snack
bar, the onsite resale shop, full service print center, the
member deposit account banking area, a full service
floral shop and the clubhouse’s video lab.
In addition to working in the Clubhouse, members get
connected to a variety of programs and services
offered through the clubhouse, including the following:
Education
This includes instruction, assistance in buying educational
materials, help with financial aid and ordering transcripts,
opportunities to serve as tutors, and assistance with
college enrollment.
Employment
One of Independence Center’s core beliefs is that
employment plays a central role in anyone’s life and
helps form an adult’s sense of identity and self worth.
Independence Center members build financial
independence and connect to the community by going
back to work. Adults with mental illnesses face enormous
obstacles in finding and keeping jobs. Sporadic work
histories due to hospitalization and illness as well as
the stigma associated with living with a mental illness
make it difficult to find and keep a job. The Center assists
members in going back to work via our transitional
and independent employment programs.
Transitional Employment (TE):
Transitional employment provides on-the-job training
and support, to help members learn work skills and meet
the employer's expectations. The positions are shortterm,
and provide members with the experience and
confidence to transition into independent employment.
Independent Employment (IE):
Unlike transitional employment, independent employment
placements are competitive and permanent. Each
placement meets the skills and experience on the
individual member and it also provides a supportive
environment and offers fair wages that will not negatively
affect his or her benefits. The intensity of supports is
dependent upon the needs of the member.
FIRST
FIRST experience as a new member of the Clubhouse.
Twenty-year-old Christina is working her very
first job ever at the Bryan Cave Law Firm via
Independence center's transitional employment
program. One of Independence Center's
strengths in 2008 was the increase in the
number of newly diagnosed young adults (18-25)
attending West End Place Clubhouse. In 2007,
only 24 attended, in 2008 that more than
doubled to 58. Mental illness typically first
presents itself between the ages of 16 and 25.
FIRST
Dave moves from transitional employment to an I E position
Dave Parker started working a transitional
employment position in the housekeeping
department at Washington University School
of Medicine. He did such a great job that he
was asked to move to an independent employment
position. In 2008, many members just like
Dave were able to work successfully with as
high as 274 members working in either
independent or transitional employment. 69% of
members who started a job this past year
were able to work at least 90 days, a 10%
increase over the previous year.

Wellness Center
People with mental illnesses are at greater risk for
coronary artery disease and diabetes; therefore
Independence Center created the first on-site wellness
program specifically designed for people with mental
illnesses. The wellness center provides health and fitness
screenings, weight loss programs, nutrition education,
smoking cessation classes, biking and walking clubs,
weight training, fitness classes, and much more.
Housing Supports
Housing supports were conceived in response to the
crucial need for decent and affordable housing for
members of Independence Center. Housing supports
include referrals to community apartments or
Independence Center housing, and providing needed
support to help members live independently in
the community.
Individual Support
Individual support services provide one-on-one
help to members who need the extra help to live in
the community.
Community Care
Community Care is a Barnes-Jewish Hospital partial
hospital program that is staffed by Independence
Center for on-going rehabilitation services. Community
Care served a total of 80 participants in 2008.
Community Care averaged 14 referrals per month - a
slight increase over the previous year. 65% of people
who attended Community Care graduated from the
program, while 88% maintained a lesser level of care.

The Wellness Program - Many Firsts!
In 2008, 416 members attended the wellness
program, a dramatic increase over the 322
served last year. The wellness program enjoyed
many firsts this year, including members and
staff losing weight for the first time in years,
members who quit smoking for the first time
ever or for many years, and staff that presented
at various conferences for the first time.

First time employed independently
Van Ingram is celebrating his FIRST independent
employment (IE) position since 1989. In 2008
165 IC members either maintained or started an
IE, a 25% increase over last year. There were
41 starts in 2008, an increase from the previous
year. Van enjoys his job as a custodian at
Washington University School of Medicine. “I
like that it’s 80 hours every 2 weeks and
I have good benefits.”

Residential
Independence Center believes that everyone has a
right to live in a decent, safe and affordable home. Our
housing program includes: four center-owned apartment
buildings with HUD rental subsidies and private onebedroom
efficiency apartments; assistance with locating
apartments throughout the community via a network
of landlords supportive of the needs of our members,
help with general living skills and daily tasks such as
grocery shopping and cleaning and regular apartment
visits by Independence Center staff. Staff also assist
members in managing doctor’s appointments and
medications if needed. One of the residential program’s
strengths is that it encourages residents to meet their
personal goals towards independence. In 2008, 93%
participated in a structured activity, 20% were able to
work and 88% of residents were involved in wellness
activities.
Midwest Psychiatry
Established in 1989, Midwest Psychiatry was created to
meet the special needs of individuals with severe and
persistent mental illnesses. The physicians and staff
have made a commitment to provide the highest quality
care using an integrated team approach. The clinical
team consists of experienced board certified psychiatrists,
nurse practitioners, and social workers. In 2008, 547
people received psychiatric services through Midwest
Psychiatry, up 8% from the previous year. A total of
81.6% of participants kept their appointments at
Midwest Psychiatry. There are many myths that still
surround mental illness, including the misconception
that mental illness is related to mental retardation.
Mental illness is an illness of the brain, just like
Leukemia is a biological disease of the blood.
Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression are
biological chemical diseases of the brain that can be
treated with proper medication and psychiatric
support. Between 70 and 90 percent of individuals
with mental illnesses have significant reduction of
symptoms and improved quality of life with a combination
of medication and psychosocial treatment.

FIRST time living independently in many years!
Justin Idleburg is living independently at
Independence Center’s apartments in Maplewood
for the first time in many years. Justin loves the
freedom of living on his own, "Living on my own
has helped me remain a responsible adult and it
helps break the stigma that adults with mental
illness can't live alone."

FIRST partnership with Barnes and TALX
Independence Center's Employment Program
couldn't thrive without the support of the 14
different employers supplying 48 individual
positions to our members so they can go back
to work. This year we started new partnerships
with TALX Corporation and Barnes - Jewish Hospital.
