From The Director
When we try to describe the essence of Clubhouse philosophy to
first-time visitors, we always end up talking about relationships. Our
Clubhouse certification standards speak to the importance of the
relationships that should exist between members and staff, and to
the relationships between the Clubhouse and its community that
are necessary for programs like ours to endure and prosper. It’s only
appropriate then that this issue of the newsletter focuses on relationships.
Articles feature the long established relationships with our founding families and
most loyal supporters and they speak of relationships with vendors who have become
vital organizational friends.
At Independence Center we’ve formed some very special and productive
relationships with friends who help us with fund raising events like Dancing With
the St. Louis Stars or the Gib Hecker Memorial Golf Tournament. Our Young Friends
group, who stage their Summer Fusion event for our benefit, constitute another
generation of relationships between their members and the companies they’ve
reached out to and involved.
We tell our Independence Center members that the best defense against the isolation
and loneliness that mental illness can cause is the network of relationships that
engagement in the Clubhouse setting offers. Like the old song says, “I get by with a
little help from my friends.” So do we at Independence Center, and we’re happy to
have the chance to salute the wonderful web of relationships we enjoy.
Have a great Spring and Summer!
Help the RHAF Help Independence Center
The Realtor Housing Assistance Fund (RHAF) Committee is planning a special fundraising event for this year to
benefit recipients of the Realtor Housing Assistance Fund Grants. Each year the RHAF provides grant funding to
Independence Center that allows the Center to continue to make improvements and upgrades to the four housing
complexes operated by Independence Center. The Center’s partnership with the RHAF has spanned 20 years, in
which time the RHAF has provided more than $30,000 to fund individual supports for members living in Independence
Center-owned housing. This includes assistance with daily living skills such as cooking and cleaning, medication
management and budgeting — all designed to help each resident live as independently as possible and avoid
homelessness.
Independence Center currently manages 71 housing units across the St. Louis area and without generous grants
from the Realtor Housing Assistance Fund, we would not be able to continue to make necessary repairs and
upgrades that allow our members to live independently and with dignity.
Independence Center has partnered with the RHAF and committed to selling 10 tickets at $15 each for a concert to be
held at the Sheldon Concert Hall, scheduled for Tuesday, October 4 at 7 PM. VIP tickets are also available at $50 each
which includes an invitation to the Afterglow reception; 1 free CD; Premiere seating and complimentary VIP parking.
Funds raised will benefit Independence Center and the other nonprofit organizations, benefiting from RHAF
funding, which work to eradicate homelessness in the St. Louis community.
The concert will feature two very prominent and talented musicians, Kim Massie and Javier Mendoza. For more information,
or to purchase one of the 10 tickets that Independence Center has reserved, please contact Connie at (314)590-2304
who they believe will be their toughest competition that
evening, and guests that evening get to see little snippets
of their practice sessions. Since the event’s inception in
Remembering Good Friends
John P. “Jack” Maguire
Independence Center lost one of its most loyal
supporters and dearest friends with the March 11,
2011 passing of John P. “Jack” Maguire.
Mr. Maguire was a delightful man, with a wry Irish
sense of humor and a brilliant mind for business.
He was Corporate Vice-President and Secretary of
General Dynamics Corp. when they were headquartered
in St. Louis and after retiring there remained
an active investment advisor until his death at age 93.
Before joining General Dynamics he had practiced
law with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City,
had served as Vice President and Director of Forbes
Publishing, and been Managing Director of Forbes
Investors Advisory Institute.
Mr. Maguire was a devoted Babson College and
Princeton University grad, who earned his law degree
from Yale. In addition to serving on Independence
Center’s board, he was a Trustee of Webster University,
St. Bonaventure University, the St. Louis Art
Museum, and the St. Louis World Affairs Council,
among other civic causes.
But his friends remembered Jack as much more
than a corporate or civic leader. He was colorful and
personable, a generous mentor, a dapper dresser, an
engaging story teller, and highly competitive in sports
from his school days on. He remained a terrific athlete
into his eighties, jogging daily and playing an intense
game of tennis; acquaintances decades younger were
in awe of his stamina and competitive spirit.
Jack and his late wife, Mary Emily “Bones” Maguire,
were incredibly generous to Independence Center.
They made an early gift commitment to the Capital
Campaign that was critical to making our new Clubhouse
facility a reality. Their cumulative lifetime
giving made them our largest individual benefactors,
and they made a provision for Independence Center
in their estate plan.
We mourn the passing of a singular individual and
very special friend of Independence Center.
H.S. Taylor Rodgers
H.S. Taylor Rodgers, age 88, died on Tuesday,
October 19, 2010. Taylor was a grandfather of five
grandchildren, great-grandfather of two, uncle,
great-uncle and friend of many.
Taylor Rodgers was a charter board member, and
the second Independence Center board President
serving a 6 year term. During that time, from
1987-1993, Taylor provided the fiscal guidance
and counsel necessary during tremendous years
of growth. As the Center’s needs grew, Taylor
helped the Center’s Executive Director, Bob
Harvey, keep an eye towards the Center’s future
fiscal stability. During Taylor’s tenure, Independence
Center added Laclede Apartments, Stupp
Apartments and Newstead Place (two residential
care facilities). So you could say he was the
“housing” president.
On a personal note, Taylor was very fond of
trees and arboretums. He often talked about the
trees he was planting at his house and how well
they were doing that particular year. Although I
remember him as a quiet man, one could always
feel his genuine warmth. In the early days of the
Center, his friendship and support of Susan and
George Hecker was that of a close and personal
bond, which he honored with his dedication and
commitment to the work of the Center. Taylor
would always be there to support his friend and
ensure that families like the Heckers received the
assistance they needed. Years after Taylor stepped
down from the board, he remained engaged
in the Center’s functions by sitting on committees,
attending events, and later ensuring that
his company matched any gifts he made to the
Center.
I asked Bob Harvey what he remembered most
about Taylor Rodgers. Bob also remembered
Taylor’s leadership during the construction of
Laclede Apartments and noted that there was a
picture of Taylor and Bob wearing hard hats. Bob
says, “He did strengthen our business practices
and anticipated some of Barnes’ HR policies.
I remember that he was very generous with his
time and was always available to us. On a more
mundane note, Taylor was famous for NEVER
wearing a coat...even in the most frigid
of weather! I liked him a lot.”
We’ll all miss our good friend Taylor Rodgers.
- by Beth Brown, Assoc. Director
Ann Carr Sheehan
Ann Carr Sheehan, with her husband, was one
of the five founding families of Independence
Center. But long before her involvement with
Independence Center, Ann was an advocate
for people with serious and persistent mental
illnesses. When one of her children was diagnosed
with a mental illness, Ann and her husband Jack
quickly realized how few services there were, and
how much more were needed for individuals and
their families. They instinctively believed in the
potential of people with serious mental illnesses
and were strident supporters of community
integration services. Ann and Jack joined with
other families when determining in the late 1970s
that St. Louis needed more community based
programs and helped to start Independence
Center. Both served on the Independence Center
board from 1980-1990 as charter board members.
For years Ann was also an active volunteer for the
St. Louis NAMI chapter, serving as board president
twice and working on the organization’s help
line, advising families how to navigate the mental
health system. Ann was involved in helping to
start the National NAMI organization as well.
Among a list of her other activities, Ann helped
the St. Louis Police Department develop training
for police officers working in the field. The
training was designed to equip officers with techniques
that would help to de-escalate confrontations
and help identify people with a mental
illness. Today the Police Department has trained
hundreds of its officers on mental illness, crisis
intervention techniques and the resources available
to assist them.
In addition, Ann knew that until health insurance
coverage was available for behavioral
health issues, people with mental illnesses would
continue to have difficulty getting help. Ann
worked tirelessly to attain legislation requiring
that health insurance cover mental illnesses in
the same way that physical health is covered. She
lobbied legislators for 14 years and helped to win
passage in 2004 of the mental health parity law.
It prohibits insurance companies from charging
different co-pays and enforcing different coverage
limits for physical and mental illnesses.
We all will greatly miss Ann and her continued
advocacy and friendship.
30 Years
of Making
Dreams
Come True
Thirty years ago, five couples dared to dream
of a place and a program that would allow
their adult children living with severe mental
illness to experience resilience and recovery.
The parents’ eyes were wide open to the challenges
that lay before them to bring their
dream to fruition. But they were undeterred,
and a renowned center of excellence exists
today because they acted. Independence
Center — the dream ten parents made real
— served more than 1,500 individuals in fiscal
year 2010 and fortunately we’ve had a core
group of individual donors who have helped
sustain our founders’ dream for the first thirty
years of Independence Center’s existence,
some donating since we opened our doors in
April 1981. We recently reached out to that
core group of individuals and asked that they
reach out to help us find another group of
committed and dedicated donors that would
assist in helping members’ dreams come true
for the next thirty years and they answered
the call.
To the right is a list of donors we’re calling
the 30/30 Club, these are individuals who
helped Independence Center grow during
its first thirty years of existence as well as the
new group that has indicated the same level
of commitment.
Why Plan For Beyond “The End”
~ Terry M Weatherby
I came from humble beginnings. I had the privilege of
parochial grade schools and high schools. My relationship
with God provided the incentive for me to grow
into the person that was part of his plan. While in high
school I completed the requirements for my Eagle
Scout designation. Since I was working most of the
time, participation in other activities was limited. My
undergraduate and masters degrees were funded with
a variety of summer jobs, part-time employment and
other activities, such as Housing Personnel Assistant
and Graduate Assistant. When I departed school I felt
guilty because I owed $300. It goes without saying that
times have changed. I guess I just indicated my AGE!
My working career took a circuitous path. In the
seventies and eighties I traveled constantly and worked
out of a suitcase. When that part of my life was over,
I fulfilled a dream that I had for many of the prior
years — serving on a host of not-for-profit boards while
balancing the realities of an entrepreneur (real estate
development and management). The urge to give back
for me was more than writing the casual check from
time to time.
Not-for-Profits are very different. While on Independence
Center’s Board of Directors I was surprised by
the professionalism of the board members, the staff
and the impact that the “Clubhouse Model” had on
the members, and the countless success
stories. I enjoyed my time on the Independence
Center Board more than my
other not-for-profit board activities.
Leading the committee to create a new
home for Independence Center was
one of the great sources of satisfaction
that I have had. It was during that
time that Mary Beth and I finalized our
Estate Planning. My professional life
has underscored the value of planning
and budgeting. Why stop when life is
over We all know the certainty of death
and taxes. Perhaps our perspective is
different because Mary Beth and I do
not have children, maybe not. After
providing for three nieces and one
nephew, everything will go to not-forprofits.
Independence Center is at the
top of the list. In the meantime we work
hard, play hard and travel, travel and
travel. Our journey is assisted by the
piece of mind of knowing that our hard work and lifetime
of planning will benefit those in need long after
we are gone.
