On August 23, 2006, Independence Center
lost an irreplaceable member of its family
when founding Board President Susan
Niekamp Hecker passed away at the age of
75.
Susan Hecker's dedication to establishing
Independence Center came from her own
family's personal experience with mental illness.
The Heckers found other families
struggling to cope with the devastating effects
of their loved ones’ illnesses and searched
for appropriate and effective care. Together,
these families founded Independence Center
in 1980, a place where their loved ones could
go, on a daily basis, to find purpose, friendship
and acceptance.
In Memory of Susan Hecker
Susan served as the President of the Board
of Directors until 1987, and helped the
Center grow from a single office/meeting
place to a nationally recognized psychiatric
rehabilitation center. She received recognition
for her work by the St. Louis Globe-
Democrat in 1982 when she won the Globe’s
Woman of the Year award, and also in 1991,
when she won the prestigious Mary Institute
Laurel Award. She is survived by daughter
Susan Darcy Hecker and son Edward
Niekamp Hecker.
The following is a reprint of the tribute given
at her memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 9,
2006, by Bob Harvey, the founding Executive
Director of Independence Center.
It was an honor to have worked with
Susan Hecker. She remains one of the
most extraordinary women I have
known. Her life's journey came with
extraordinary pain but she responded
with extraordinary resolve. It is clear that
a single endeavor, a passion and purpose,
has come to be associated with her life:
the creation of a world renowned psychiatric
rehabilitation program called
Independence Center.
She was unique and none of the words I
can speak will do justice to her accomplishments
or fully communicate the
impact she had. Susan Hecker changed
Transitional Employment Takes Off!!
"Work is the glue that binds us to
society" - those were the words
that founding director, Bob
Harvey, used to convey how
important having a job is to all of
us, but especially our members.
We all get a sense of identity from
the kind of work we do - whether
we are an accountant or a teacher.
In fact, isn't usually the first question
a new acquaintance will ask of
us, "What do you do?" This sense
of identity is important for all of us

as human beings - and we recognize
it is that much more important for members to be able to respond
to that question in order for them to feel a part of our community.
Lately at Independence Center our employment program is beginning
to burst at the seams. Through a lot of hard work and patient, tireless
dedication, the efforts to find employment opportunities for our members
are finally coming to fruition and members are reaping the benefits
- getting the opportunity to go to work.
In the last few months, Independence Center has added new
Transitional Employment postions, totalling more than 45 placements.
This is thrilling because it means we have officially met our employment
goals in both clubhouses - with more than 25% of our total
membership working in TE positions! Continued on page 5

my life. And we made a good team.
Together we dreamed a brash, impractical
and unlikely goal. A goal that was unrealistic
and a goal we were assured we could
never accomplish. But she was undeterred.
She was the first and she was the
catalyst. Susan Hecker changed my life
and also the lives (literally) of thousands
of people…from the people who have
made a career at Independence Center, to
the people who are members of
Independence Center and to the families
and friends of those who use the Center
as well. She leaves a legacy, a symbol and
testimony to a life of service; a life with
purpose.
Neither Susan-nor I for that matter-were
known to be particularly easy going or
even always pleasant to work with - but
she was smart, quick and sharp, with her
husband George behind her, and with
her extraordinary determination, and
what was unrealistic, what was unlikely,
what was impractical and what had
seemed only a remote possibility was, in
fact, given life. I was not a member of
the Hecker family, but they led me to feel

Fifth Annual Susan N. Hecker
Leadership Society Induction
On Wednesday, June 14th, Independence Center welcomed its fifth class
of inductees into the Susan N. Hecker Leadership Society at a dinner
held at the University Club. In addition to honoring Society members,
the evening also featured guest speaker George B. Handran, Co-Trustee
of the Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation , who offered reflections on the life
and vision of Mr. Baer. Sidney Baer, Jr., part of the Stix, Baer and Fuller
department store family, dealt with mental illness most of his life, and
established the foundation for the purpose of ameliorating the effects of
this disease for others.

$100,000 and above. The purpose of the Society is to honor the Center's most generous
donors and to encourage further
support for the Center so that
its services can remain a vibrant
part of the St. Louis community

Golf Tournament Sets New Record
On August 26th, golfers hit the links at Forest Park to take
part in the 9th Annual Gib Hecker Memorial Golf
Tournament to benefit Independence Center. The Gib
Hecker Memorial Golf Tournament started as a family event

by Bill Hayes to honor his friend, and has grown to be the
Center's biggest fundraising event of the year. The 2006
tournament raised over $34,000 for the Center!
The event boasted a record 17 sponsors with scores of area
businesses and individuals advertising and donating items to
the silent auction and raffle. Better still, it was a great time.
Morning thunderstorms threatened to impede play, but by
the time the tournament kicked off in the afternoon, golfers
enjoyed bright sunshine and a beautiful course.
Kent Higginbotham, golf committee member and member
of the Independence Center Board of Directors enthused,
"It was a miracle that the rain held off - the weather turned
out to be great! My group and I enjoyed the day and the
Center made some new friends...and some money!"
Special thanks go out to the members of the golf
committee, consisting of Board members and other
community volunteers, for all their efforts in planning the

Months of careful planning and
vigorous preparation came to
fruition September 6-9 as the 2006
Mid States Conference, hosted by
Independence Center, kicked off at
the Hilton at the Ballpark in
downtown St. Louis.
The three-day regional conference
for clubhouses accredited by the
International Center for Clubhouse
Development (ICCD) included a

What an upbeat summer we have had at Independence
Center! Within a few short weeks we enjoyed a grand celebration
of our twenty fifth anniversary, signed all the lease purchase
documents on a new home for our clubhouse programs
at 4245 Forest Park Boulevard, and completed detailing plans
and specs so that construction contracts can be awarded soon.
We anticipate occupying this building by this time next year.
Equally important, we've laid the foundation for our first ever
capital campaign to make this new facility a reality. While
we'll have a great deal of news about this effort to share with
you in our next newsletter, we're pleased to now be able to
announce that the campaign has a name: "Rebuilding Futures,
Restoring Lives." We've recruited a distinguished and dynamic
campaign cabinet, and major leadership gifts are being solicited
in a "quiet" phase of this drive, including some challenge
grants which should prove significant for conducting a successful
campaign.
We've also been planning the Mid-States Conference of the
International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD), a
biennial gathering of clubhouse mental health programs from
the middle region of the country, which Independence Center
wide variety of informational
seminars and break-out sessions, as
well as fun opportunities for
networking, tours of Independence
Center, and of course, a gala on Friday
night to wrap up the conference.
Speakers and presenters included
members and staff from clubhouse
programs across the region, and topics
included serving young adults,
fundraising, clubhouse leadership and
governance, the importance of
physical wellness programs, tracking
clubhouse data, employment and
more. In all, more than 200 people
were in attendance.
A highlight of the conference was the
presentation of the Leadership in
Employment award to Patrick Flavin,
hosted in early September. More than 200 members and staff
from 40 other clubhouse programs and coalitions participated
in this three-day gathering, in which best practices in the field
were shared and discussed.
Finally, we are pleased to report that our efforts to increase
both transitional and independent employment opportunities
for our members are meeting with unprecedented success.
The significant strides which we've made in widening both the
number and variety of placements are recounted in an article
in this issue.
We hope you, our loyal friends and dedicated donors, share

like one - so strong was the drive
and dedication of Susan and George.
We made lots of mistakes. Susan, no
stranger to the VP Fair, decided that
the Center should sell something at
the 1981 fair in order to raise money
… the scarcity of which plagued us
and I am sure, still does. Being creative,
she came up with a grand
scheme to make VeePers. These were
Styrofoam letters;V's and P's dipped
in an adhesive and then in red, white
and blue sparkles, connected to
springs which were connected to a
plastic head strap resulting in insectlike
antennae with V and P bobbling
above one's head. Members and staff
worked for weeks and assembled
some 2000 of these VeePers. In the
110 degree heat that year, we sold,
maybe, 25.
But we did some things right, too.
There was always something more
that she wanted us to do, or to
understand. In her later years, Susan
shared wonderful stories about her
friends and how they had given help
and had even asked other people for
help to nourish the fledgling
Independence Center. She said that
she was just following her instincts
and didn't really know exactly how
to go about doing it. She evidently
had very good instincts!
Susan did introduce the Center to
her friends and acquaintances. She
talked out loud about what she called
the last "closet baby" and brought the
reality of mental illness into the light.
Remember, this was a time when
speaking about mental illness was
considered a social faux paux. The
courage it took for her to do that is
unimaginable and humbling.
Susan Hecker changed my life. I am
profoundly grateful to have known
her, to have had the opportunity to
have shared a significant and noble
dream with her. Susan remains in
my memory a vital and powerful
force...more like a force of nature.
Susan Hecker changed my life. And
the lives of thousands of St. Louisans
and she helped to make her community
a better, more caring and more
compassionate place. What better
legacy could one leave?

Independence Center’s 25th Anniversary Ce
On July 9, 2006, Independence Center celebrated its silver anniversary
with much fun and fanfare at an Afternoon at the Races. Hosted at the
Foundry Arts Centre in St. Charles, more than 200 supporters, members
and staff came decked out in derby attire to enjoy an afternoon of
horse races and pay tribute to the Center's first 25 years. The event,
which raised more than $42,000, included a silent auction and gourmet
dinner, with a live jazz trio providing the perfect festive backdrop. The
theme even carried over into the bar, where attendees could purchase
mint juleps in special 25th anniversary commemorative glasses.
Honorary chair and founding family member Mrs. Nicholas V.V.
Franchot III addressed the crowd during dinner, relaying the passion
and drive that brought about the birth of Independence Center. After
stressing the importance of the Center's programs and recounting
some of its many accomplishments, she finished by saying, "You are
continuing the work we started. I know that with your help, our next
twenty-five years will be as exciting and successful as the first have
been."
A Photo Finish!!!
Former Executive Director Bob Harvey also made a few brief comments
and then it was off to the races! Party-goers had the opportunity
to bet on ten different horse races over the course of the evening, as
well as bid on a wide array of silent auction items - including some
original artwork by nationally renowned artist Trish Biddle. The gallery
was abuzz with excitement all evening and a good time was had by all.
Some of the many members who were able to attend the 25th anniversary event.
Overall, 30 members attended, thanks to the generosity of the many sponsors and
individual supporters who made this event a success.
This opportunity to spread news of Independence Center's mission and celebrate

What is really exciting is that these
positions are offering more variety
than ever - and better wages for

two part-time placements at Grace

NAMI WALK
A HUGE SUCCESS
Forest Park was a sea of orange T-shirts on the morning of June 3rd, 2006, as supporters gathered
for the 4th Annual St. Louis NAMI Walks for the Mind of America. The day was bright and
sparkling, as were the smiles on the faces of those walking for a cause they believed in. Booths
were set up with brochures and giveaways, music was playing, and groups of families and friends
were re-uniting. There were donuts and coffee, and best of all, giant bins of iced-down
bottled water to take on the Walk. The heat
was a factor but it wasn't necessary to walk
the full distance. There was a short loop
and, of course, one could walk as far possible,
then turn around and go back.
The Independence Center had been busy
for weeks. Each Unit formed a team.
Creativity flowed leading to names such as
West Pine's Kitchen Unit's "Dishwalkers"
and Midland House's Clerical Unit's
"Walkie Talkies". Posters went up, discussions
were held at Unit Meetings and signs
with concrete facts about mental illness
were made for walkers to carry.
Each person received a form for listing
donors, addresses and amounts donated.
One member alone raised more than
$1,000. After the Walk, when the full
amount donated was totaled up,
