Boomerangs walked the rocky
road in Series-1 of the 2012
Hummel F-League but a midtable
start is a still a good
enough platform to build on.
A tough 2-1 win over Melbourne
Heart in game one was tempered
by a serious Achilles tear to star
player Greg Cattanach and a foot
injury to Ryan Keir, and it didn’t
get much better after that with
the Boomerangs succumbing to
competition leaders Vic Vipers 4-1
and Dural Warriors 8-3.
Last summer’s NSW Premier
League golden boot Daniel Fulton
finally got on the scoresheet with
a round 3 double, and there was
plenty of promise shown in the
contributions of his team-mates.
Despite the injury setbacks,
Boomerangs coach Kristian
Collins is sure of good signs
ahead for the ACT-based club.
“We went into the weekend full of
confidence and had a few injuries
leading up to it that dampened
our spirit a bit,” he said. “We
were aiming for six points but
there’s definitely some positives
to take form Series-1. Our young
bloke Gianmarco Senatore was
absolutely outstanding in his first
ever senior Futsal and just stood
up, while Daniel Fulton is always a
standout.”
“The competition was what we
expected. We expected Dural
and St Albans to be doing pretty
well, but despite what the table
shows I probably expected Vipers
to be more of a challenge. But,
watching all the teams play and
seeing the styles and standard,
we’re pretty confident of a top 2-3
position as long as we keep the
squad in good shape.”
With Cattanach expected to
be out for the entire F-League
season the Boomerangs stocks
Officially formed in 2007 by Kristian Collins and Eddie Senatore, Boomerangs
FS is a Canberra-based club dedicated to providing playing and development
opportunities to Futsal players across the ACT region. Boomerangs entered
the 2009 NSW Super League with an eye to being promoted to premier
league over a five-year period. But earlier than expected success saw the
club promoted to the NSW Premier League by the end of its second season.
Buoyed by their elevation Boomerangs entered the 2011 Hummel F-League
with an aim of giving its players even greater exposure in Australia’s national
Futsal league. As if that wasn’t enough, Boomerangs will also travel to Europe
later this year with 12 players to take part in various competitions and matches
against elite clubs and schools.
Formed in 1994, Dural Warriors is the representative Futsal club of Dural Sport
& Leisure Centre playing in the NSW Futsal Premier League competition.
Dural Warriors has a proud history in NSW Futsal competitions, winning many
titles and filling its trophy cabinet to the brim. Recent honours include the
2010/11 FNSW Premier League Premiers and 2011/12 FNSW Premier League
champions, and they carry some amazing form into this year’s Hummel
F-League. Dural has lost just one game in its last 15 on its way to collecting
this summer’s premier league championship. A goal-difference of positive 39
from 14 tough premier league games is also a telling statistic as Dural made
life difficult for every opponent – they lost just two games and both by a mere
goal.
Honours
2010-2011 FNSW Premier League Premiers
2011-2012 FNSW Premier League Champions
Dural Warriors scored
a staggering 25 goals when
they scorched the courts of
Melbourne in a three-game
Series-1 massacre of the 2012
Hummel F-League.
A second-half blitz against
state rivals East Coast gave
Dural a perfect 7-3 start to the
competition before a 10-1 hunt
had the Jaguars reeling and sent
rumblings across the F-League
arena. The Warriors completed
their plunder with an 8-3 victory
win over an injury-ravaged
Boomerangs in game three.
Dural’s nifty Nathan Niski and wily
Greg Giovenali scored five goals
apiece and were well supported
by Jarrod Basger (four goals
against Boomerangs), Michael
Figueira, Toby Seeto and co.
Despite the devastating scorelines
coach Rob Varela was more
impressed by the performance of
his young brigade.
“The boys did well, especially the
young ones. We expected Greg
[Giovenali] and Toby [Seeto] to
play well, which they did, but we
also played the youngsters a lot
because in future games they’ll
have to pick up the responsibility,
and from the look of how they
went [in Series-1] they’ll be ready
for it.”
“We’ve had the advantage of a
lot of the players being together
for a while leading into F-League,
so we were able to start the
competition strong. In some cases
we did better than expected,
but the overall standard of the
competition was pretty good. All
teams showed glimpses of good
form.”
Varela didn’t see venue locations
as playing as big a role in game
results as player availability. “We
were quite happy to have most
of our players go to Melbourne,
but well see who can make the
next few rounds,” he said. “It’s
hard to tell not having seen the
other draws and then see who’s
available and who’s not. I think
that has more of an impact on the
games than the venue has.”
The 2012 Hummel F-League has welcomed a new club into the national Futsal
community following the introduction of East Coast Heat. This newly formed
club is excited about the future and plans to make itself a prominent name on
the Futsal scene. Heat aims to be unique and has devised a strategy it hopes
will capture the attention of the broader Futsal community, starting with a catchy
name and enterprising list of players from Victoria, NSW and Queensland
(hence the name East Coast). Operators believe a stronger national league
will be a natural evolution for the F-League and see qualification for the AFC
club championship as an important development for elite players. The team
has strong links to successful Melbourne Futsal club Pascoe Vale, which was
involved in last year’s F-League as Inner City.
East Coast Heat will look to
consolidate their steady start to
the 2012 Hummel F-League as
the national competition heads
to Sydney for Series-2.
In game one they led league
leaders Dural at halftime only to
succumb to a second half Warriors
onslaught and go down 7-3, Heat
then came out and snatched a
2-2 draw with unbeaten St Albans
Strikers before marching on to a
5-1 defeat of Jaguars in their final
game.
The mid-table positioning and
gelling together of a talented
crew has coach Jamie Amendolia
pleased with East Coast’s
progress.
“I’m very happy with the way the
weekend went. We have a plan on
how we would like to go and we’re
not to upset about how we started.
It’s a new team, new players, and
we weren’t expecting to set the
world on fire in the first series,” he
said.
“We lost to [undefeated] Dural
after leading early, and against
St Albans we played quite well
but just couldn’t finish off our
chances. All the hard work Pete
[Spathis] and I put into [Sydney
City junior now Strikers keeper]
Mark Brackenrig really came back
to haunt us,” Amendolia said with
a wry smile.
“At end of the day, for myself and
Peter [Spathis], entering a team
in the hummel F-League was all
about testing the waters to see
how we would go.
“We never expected to set the
world on fire, we just don’t have
the resources money-wise, so this
year was about getting a team
in there, and if we can get some
good results then that’s a bonus.”
Jaguars Futbol Sala Club is a branch of Australian Futsal Group, which has
been operating in Victoria since 2000. The club is based at Caroline Springs in
Melbourne’s West and currently runs programs for juniors from four years old
right through to open age. Jaguars have enjoyed plenty of success over the past
five years, crowned 2011 AFG Cup Champions to go with a stack of junior titles.
The current crop of under-14 boys are certain to be a force to be reckoned with in
If Futsal games were
library books then Victorian
club Jaguars were handed
plenty of lessons in their
F-League Series-1 opener over
the Queen’s Birthday long
weekend.
But although they may have
been beaten 8-2, 10-1 and 5-1
by Vipers, Warriors and Heat
respectively, the experience
gained from three high-end battles
is invaluable.
Also to be taken into account is
the young age of the Jaguars,
their long-term intent and the
tough first-up draw dished out to
them.
Coach Jack Dugonjic freely
admitted the club is working to
a plan and wasn’t put off by the
Series-1 scorelines.
“The boys’ eyes are wide open
now,” he said. “We knew it would
be tough and the boys got found
out a little bit, but they put up a
good fight in all three games only
to run out of steam at the end.”
“The boys needed to play some
games. They’re young boys
and training is one thing, but it’s
completely different to playing and
game time is what they needed
“We’ve had minimum amount of
games in time to prepare for this
competition. I don’t think we were
as bad as the scores indicate, we
just conceded way too many goals
at the end of the games. [With 23
goals conceded in three games]
Obviously the area we really need
to work on is defence; we need
to be stronger at the back at this
level of competition.”
Inspired by a vision for a broad based community team celebrating cultural
diversity and sporting passion through football, Melbourne Heart FC was
established in 2009. This year, on a path to creating a complete football club,
Heart teamed up with Cobras Futsal Club to join the 2012 Hummel F-League.
Cobras FC began in 2006 as a founding club in the Melbourne Futsal League and
in its six years Cobras has grown in stature to now boast the largest number of
female players and state representative players of any Victorian club. The Cobras
developmental philosophy led them to organise a trip to Spain in 2011 to play,
train and watch Futsal at the highest level at host club El Pozo Murcia.
Melbourne Heart is ready
to bounce back from its torrid
2012 Hummel F-League debut
and make an imprint in its first
indoor season proper.
Heart were very unfortunate not
to pick up any points from its
Series-1 premiere, going down to
Boomerangs 2-1 in a titanic tussle,
and punished by Parramatta 6-zip
in game two. With their backs to
the wall in the third game against
St Albans, Melbourne blasted their
way back from a 5-0 deficit to go
down valiantly 5-3.
A bit underdone by but no means
totally outplayed Heart coach
Edgard Vatcky is keen for a bite
at Series-2 action in Sydney
after being so competitive in
Melbourne.
“We dominated the first game
but couldn’t get the scores on the
board, we must have missed at
least five simple tap-ins, and we
probably got a bit too confident
heading into second game
[against Parramatta] and were
very complacent,” he said.
“There wasn’t a big difference
between the two teams in the
third game, I would say their
goalkeeper kept them in the
game, and we really dominated
the second half when we started
putting them away.”
Vatcky was pleased the team was
able to play some good Futsal
despite its late organization.
“With the team being put together
at the last minute I think we still
capable of doing well and we’re all
looking forward to the next round
of games,” he said.
“We know where our problems are
and know our strengths and now
have more of an understanding of
the opposition. We need to work
on our finishing, and we let them
have too many cheap, easy shots
on goal… but we’ve now got more
experience under our belt and all
feel we can find quite a few points
in the next series.”
BLUES
The Blues to
Turn it Around
Parramatta Blues was established in 1993 by Justin McLeay, Steven Luburic
and Robert Issa. Parramatta was a consistent performer in the NSW Super
League before withdrawing from competition in 2010. But now they’ve returned
and aiming to bring a family oriented club back to the heights of elite Futsal. The
Blues were created on a mantra to identify and develop the skills of kids in the
Parramatta district and expose them to this exciting game.
There’s a spring in the step
of Parramatta Blues as they eye
off a strong Series-2 showing
to shake off their 2012 Hummel
F-League cobwebs.
The new-look Blues did well in
losses to unbeaten title aspirants
St Albans 4-0 and Vic Vipers 5-2
and demolished Melbourne Heart
6-0 to leave it with a disappointing
three points from the opening
weekend.
Heading into Series-1 with
confidence Parramatta were
stunned to be held to nil by the
Strikers in the opening contest,
but six players got on the
scoresheet in the final two games
and the signs are all there for a
successful F-League season,
according to coach Steven
Luburic.
“We dominated the games… and
probably held the ball for 70 per
cent in both of our losses, it was
just the execution that was lacking
a bit and that’s what we’re working
on now,” he said.
“I’m confident we have the players
and the ability and the tactics to
do well in this competition, and I
think we’re on the right track.”
Parramatta were dealt no favours
when they were the only outfit to
face three Victorian sides in the
first round of matches, which gives
Luburic even greater confidence
in his team’s standing.
“We played three Melbourne
teams at full strength in
Melbourne. That’s how the draw
is, we certainly haven’t lost
any confidence and from what
I’ve seen we’ll be more than
competitive,” he said.
“The only thing that made it
harder for us is that Melbourne
are currently playing their Futsal
season during winter and it’s so
hard to pick up a scratch match in
Sydney at the moment.”
Founded in 2005, St Albans Strikers have been at the forefront of Futsal in Victoria for the past
seven years. The Strikers men’s side has been a leading outfit in the Melbourne Futsal League
and also a trailblazer in interstate Futsal competitions, having participated in the 2010 Sydney
Invitational and then finishing second in the inaugural 2011 Hummel F-League in Sydney. Its
junior teams are widely recognised as being some of the best in the state and the current under-
14’s Strikers boasts seven Victorian state representatives in its squad. St Albans is involved
in running community programs for new refugee arrivals to Australia and runs a well-received
grassroots competition.
St Albans Strikers enjoyed
a fruitful start to the 2012
unbeaten to sit third on the
ladder.
The Strikers powered home to
a 4-0 whitewash of Parramatta
in their opening Series-1 game
before being held to a 2-2 draw
by a resurgent East Coast Heat.
St Albans then held off a rampant
claim a 5-3 round-3 victory.
The scoring contribution was
spread throughout the team with
eight Strikers notching up goals
across the three games, a united
display that delighted coach
Robert Lakovski.
“Of course I’m pretty happy. If
you asked me before the league
started that we’d be unbeaten
after the first series I would’ve
SQUAD LIST
said no problem, I’ll take that. I
think we were even unlucky not
to get three wins [having plenty
of chances against Heat], and we
definitely have a good platform
moving into Series-2,” he said.
“Apart from 1-2 sides I think
there’s not much difference
between the standard of the
teams. You can’t discount teams
like Boomerangs, and you could
throw a blanket over all the teams
and I think it’ll be the team that’s
most consistent that’ll go all the
way through. I told the players at
the start that it won’t be the best
players that win this competition,
it’ll be the best team that wins this
league.”
While he awaits the verdict on key
player Vadim Mazurski’s turned
ankle, Lakovski said he would still
have a strong squad available
as the tournament heads north
across the border for the next two
series.
“From what I know everyone else
[beside Mazurski] is available
so we should be at or near full
strength in Sydney,” he said. “All
the coaches that have bigger
squads actually have a problem
of how many minutes they’ll give
each player, so it’s a lot harder
with man management to get the
balance right.”
The Victorian Vipers Futsal Club was established in 1999 out of a need to
provide training, playing and touring opportunities for players with a genuine
interest in pursuing the sport at the highest levels. The club is the oldest
surviving and arguably most successful Futsal model in Victoria and boasts up
to eight players in the current Victorian senior squad. It also has three Futsalroos
on its books. The Vipers is the only Victorian club to have represented
Australia at FIFA and AMF (the sport’s world governing bodies) World Cups
and international level as a coach or player. Their trophy cabinet is overflowing
with state and national titles, the V- League Cup and League double, Football
Federation Victoria State Championships, 5-a-side football Vodafone and
Hyundai Championships and FFA Futsal championship awards. The Vipers also
have a global gloss having toured and played against international club teams
as well as national representative team friendlies and exchanges with Thailand,
China, Catalonia, Russia, France and England. Their F-League squad reflects
this with players boasting backgrounds from Japan, Brazil, Colombia and Chile.
The Vic Vipers are equal-first
in the 2012 Hummel F-League
after a trio of terrific Series 1
victories in Melbourne.
The Vipers laid out intercity rivals
Jaguars 8-2 but had a sterner test
against Boomerangs, eventually
winning 4-1, before over-running
Parramatta 5-2 to make it a
perfect three-from-three start for
coach Milton Sakkos.
Captain Jonathan Barientos led
from the front and tops the team
scoring chart with four goals,
including a vital hat-trick against
the Blues in round 3. His brother
Jason also chimed in with three
goals, as did Adam Cooper who
scored in all three games.
“It’s been a really positive start to
the series for us and I really can’t
ask for more than that,” Sakkos
said.
“Ultimately to play as an Australian
representative at the AFC is one
of the prime motivating factors for
the players, but the other is the
opportunity to put themselves out
there on a national level and show
the other teams that we can play
the game and have a fair bit of
experience.”
Sakkos thought the standard of
the F-League was very good in
Series-1 and looked forward to a
thrilling season once all teams find
their rhythm.
“It was a little bit higher than I
expected, and a lot of the teams
came prepared to play. I would
say the majority of teams will
progressively get better as the
series come on and Series 3 and
4 will be crucial,” he said.
