WELCOME!
Welcome back to the New Zealand Football Futsal
National League. If Series Two has anything like the
action of Series One we’re in for a great weekend of
futsal at its best.
Looking back at Series One - it was all the effort put in
by the league management team and the many star
volunteers that delivered us the perfect playing field to
display that we mean business.
North vs South, Aussie vs Kiwi, direct free kicks with the
last kick of the game to steal a winner and goalkeepers
getting lobbed at halfway - Series One had it it all!
And with many of the New Zealand-based players doing
their utmost to get themselves in the frame for Futsal
Whites selection thrown into the mix - it should be a very
exciting weekend in Dunedin indeed!
Bring it on!
Yours in futsal,
EAST CITY FUTSAL AUCKLAND
East City sit third on the table after Series One of
the inaugural NZF Futsal National League, with a
magnificent fight back against Football South Futsal
in Round 3 a major highlight for the Aucklanders.
After trailing 4-1 going into the final few minutes, East
City fired home three late goals and nearly snatched
a winner in what was one of the games’ of the series.
Inspired by a superb hatrick from young Futsal White
Dylan Manickum, the Aucklanders also came back
from 3-1 down in the final minutes against the red hot
Maccabi Hakoah in Round 5, before a penalty with
the last kick of the game sealed it for the Sydney side.
With mercurial playmaker Miro Major in top form, the
2008 National Tournament Champions are capable
of beating any team in the National League. Player/
coach, former Futsal White Nathan Robertson used
himself sparingly in Series One, but like Major, was a
huge influence whenever on court.
Dylan Manickum remains New Zealand’s most
exciting young futsal prospect and leads the Golden
Boot race going into this weekend, while James Hart
and Jakob Sinkora’s ability to weigh in with vital goals
make East City a tough proposition for all opposition
this weekend.
RED SOX MANAWATU SPORTS CLUB MANAWATU
Red Sox Manawatu found it tough going in Series
One, with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over bottom of
the table Christchurch Futsal in the last game of the
weekend the team’s only points in the Series.
Lead by former Youngheart Manawatu players Murray
Burling and Dalin Wilson, Red Sox will be targeting
victories over Christchurch Futsal, East City and
Football South Futsal as a minimum requirement in
order to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With 2010 Futsal White training squad danger men
Nat Wright and Patrick Pilz and in-form target Greg
O’Connor all available for Series Two, the combative
Red Sox are likely be a much tougher prospect in
Dunedin this weekend.
capital CITY FUTSAL wellington
Unbeaten after Series One, Brian Blellock’s well
drilled and experienced side are genuine title
contenders. They will be looking forward to building
on the considerable momentum gained on their home
court in November’s series.
Led by the classy Futsal White and Hawke’s Bay
United playmaker - Brazilian Lucas Silva, Capital’s
rotation-based Brazilian style of “total” futsal, can be
mesmerizing to watch. In Series One they enjoyed
sustained periods of possession as they worked their
opponents around the court at will.
With Brazilian futsal specialists Reginaldo Richard,
Enrico Meirelles, Taiki Davey and Mattheus Decnop,
Capital are a formidable prospect, particularly for the
New Zealand-based sides. Throw in Silva (if not on
ASB Premiership duty) and Futsal White team mates
Said Soleimanpour, Tariq Assad, Khalid Rhazouk
and Izaac O’Hara and it seems only an on court
catastrophe in Series Two could prevent this outfit
making the playoffs.
CHRISTCHURCH FUTSAL CANTERBURY
Ricardo Felitti’s youthful Christchurch Futsal side
struggled against all opposition in Series One,
conceding 37 goals in five games and finishing
bottom of the table.
While the team have trained hard for Series Two
over the summer and will be looking to upset at
least one of the big guns in Dunedin this weekend,
Christchurch Futsal remain a ‘work in progress’ as
they build towards next season’s National League.
Meanwhile, its difficult to see the South Islanders
getting anywhere near a spot in the playoffs by the
end of Series Three in Auckland.
Sixteen year olds Rian Hooper (pivot) and Isaac
Malpass (flanker) were impressive at times in Series
One and along with seventeen year olds Miles
Gruschow (target) and Marcus Livingstone (flanker),
look like exciting prospects for the future.
Chileans Jorge Donoso and Jose Sabugal,
unavailable for Series One are exciting additions to
FOOTBALL SOUTH FUTSAL OTAGO
This weekend’s hosts were in some ways the
‘surprise package’ of Series One, with Darren
Hart, Sean McIntee and Tri Nguyen all having their
moments amongst a hard working and well organised
unit.
Only Capital City of the New Zealand sides managed
to win convincingly against the southerners, who
easily took care of Red Sox and Christchurch Futsal
before playing out a 4-4 draw with East City in a
thriller in Series One.
The Otago side will want to consign the East City
game to history after self-destructing while leading
4-1 with only a couple of minutes left on the clock
and will be looking to target at least two more wins
over the weekend in order to set themselves up for a
chance at a playoffs spot in Series Three in Auckland
in March.
MACCABI HAKOAH New south wales
Futsal NSW Super League side Maccabi Hakoah are
joint leaders of the NZF Futsal National League after
Series One.
With their direct style, Maccabi were at times in a
class of their own over their five games during Series
One.
Only Capital City Futsal (0-0) and East City (3-4) got
near the Australians in Wellington as they smacked
home 30 goals in five matches and with the influential
Daniel Fulton and golden boot contenders Jordan
Mundell and Jarrod Basger returning from NSW duty
following the Australian Futsal Nationals in Canberra
in early January, they will be a tough proposition
throughout the weekend.
