in the New Gym at 2:30 p.m. for Rebel Connections, a PTO/Youth Leadership program in which upper classmen will introduce the
freshmen to VHHS. Each student should be sure to bring his/her class schedule. The day will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
Please note that by design, REGISTRATION is a two-part event: online and onsite.
It is important to be at onsite registration at the high school for several reasons: schedule distribution, school pictures,
parking lottery for juniors, choosing lockers, and, of course, the supply sale (PTO’s only fundraiser).
Each of these necessary events (except supply sale) was formerly addressed during school hours which took
valuable instructional time. We appreciate the parents of our community for partnering with the school and with PTO
volunteers to register the 1800+ high school students of Vestavia Hills.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
Cas McWaters
We are quickly approaching the end of a great 2011-2012
school year, and our students continue to “sharpen the Rebel
Edge.” Our students raised $20,000.00 collectively to help
build a school in Africa and for the Arthritis Foundation.
We are currently planning for a huge Relay For Life
event with a goal of $170,000.00. Our students have built
another house for Habitat for Humanity as well as helped
with several other homes. Once again, this is the “Rebel
Edge.”
Please check our school calendar on our website for important
end of the year dates. Our registration process for the
2012-2013 school year will once again be on-line. You will
need you student’s I.D. number to complete the online registration.
This number has been on your student’s report card
and will be on the final report card. Please find detailed information
on the process on our website over the next few
weeks.
Also, our 2012 mid-term and 2013 Final Exam schedules are
on the Google Calendar. Please remember only Doctors’
Excuses will be accepted as an excused absence during
exam times.
Thank you for all of your support for our students and faculty.
Have a great summer and let’s continue the “Rebel
Tradition of Excellence” next year.
Sincerely,
Cas McWaters
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN…
Kelly Bottcher, PTO President
It has been my pleasure and my privilege to serve as the
PTO President this year. As always, the year flew by mostly
because I had the opportunity to work with extraordinary people,
make new friendships, and, all the while, do what I love.
That recipe makes for a great year…and it has been a great
year! We have attempted much; we have expected much, and
we have accomplished much; thank you. Because of your support,
our excellent reputation at VHHS stands strong both academically
and in extra-curricular and service areas. I am passing
the torch to the very capable hands of your next PTO President,
Linda Barnett.
There is an affectionate term that we use sometimes in different
venues: “older mom” and “younger mom.” Linda and I are
“older moms”…I hope you didn’t notice. We are both graduating
our youngest children and have both been in the Vestavia
School System for decades…( not a typo ) Both of us found a
passion in serving our community, and together, we have
experienced being a part of something greater than ourselves.
If you haven’t met Linda, you will find her capable, kind, generous,
and discerning. What you will love most about her is
her friendship. I am a lucky recipient and count that gift first.
VHHS PTO serves to support our school and serves as a
communication link between our parents and school personnel.
This year we have utilized THE LINK, our PTO newsletter,
email announcements, the PTO website, and a telephone
call tree to keep our families aware of important school information.
Copies of our newsletter are also available on the
PTO website which can be accessed through the school website
(www.vestavia.k12.al.us/vestaviahigh).
In recapping some of our PTO sponsored events, we have
assisted our school by providing hospitality for college fairs,
teacher meetings and luncheons, Christmas baked goods in
faculty workrooms, and a Back to School breakfast. PTO has
also helped host Open House, Eighth Grade Transition Night,
Off to College Night, Career Day, Rebel Connections, and
New Family Welcome. PTO assists with the student directory,
new teacher supplies, school landscaping, scoliosis
screening, health room supplies, faculty Christmas gifts, and
Awards Day awards for students who are nationally recognized
for academic achievement. We also sponsor a creative
arts contest, and monthly Parent Awareness meetings. Our
Special Projects program exists through your support of PTO
fundraisers and has been able to enhance the learning environment
for our students at VHHS. Please see the list of
items in this newsletter which have been provided to our
school through your generosity and support of the Supply
Sale and Cash for Classrooms.
A BIG Bottcher thank you for all the volunteers that made
my job the easy part. We had fun and we accomplished our
goals. You made the difference and I stand in awe of your
creativity and commitment. If you are not involved, let me
encourage you to attend a monthly meeting next year. These
PTO meetings are a great opportunity to meet other volunteers,
as well as, one of the best sources of information about
what is happening in our school. PLEASE NOTE THE
CHANGE IN DATE AND TIME OF OUR FINAL PTO MEET-
ING: MAY 8 th , 12:14-2:00 pm, $5.00 for lunch. Please call
me for further details.
One last very important note: Registration will again be a
two-fold process with Online Pre-registration and Onsite campus
registration. The Board of Education has been working to
improve last year’s online process and our own Registration
2011-2012 End of Year Issue of The Link Page 3
team of experts at VHHS has been very hard at work to ensure
that your onsite registration experience is better than ever! You
will receive a letter during the summer with instructions and
dates for online pre-registration. The 10-digit student number
can be found on all report cards. Please file this number someplace
that will be easily accessible on July 25 th , as you will need
it for online pre-registration. You MUST complete ONLINE pre
-registration in order to participate in ONSITE registration.
It is IMPERATIVE that you complete online pre-registration
in order for your onsite registration to occur in a timely
fashion. It is also important to note that online pre-registration
opens Wednesday, July 25th. Onsite registration at VHHS begins
with the senior class on Tuesday, July 31st. All registration
information for VHHS can be found on the front page of this
newsletter.
Again, thank you for your patience and support this year; I
can’t tell you what a difference it makes in having a good year
compared to a great year. Have a wonderful summer and I look
forward to seeing you in July. If you have any questions, concerns
or suggestions feel free to contact me: 907-0778,
HOW TO FIGURE GRADE
POINT AVERAGES
Grade point averages (GPA) are updated only at the end of the
school year for freshmen and sophomores and at the end of each
semester for juniors and seniors. Grade point averages can be
obtained from the registrar, Susan Merrill. If, however, you would
like to compute a projected GPA for your student, follow the instructions
below.
Count the number of A’s. (Count a ½ credit course as .5
and a 1½ credit course as 1.5.)* Multiply the number of A’s
by 4.
Count the number of B’s and multiply the number by 3.
Count the number of C’s and multiply the number by 2.
Count the number of D’s and multiply the number by 1.
Count the number of F’s and multiply by 0.
Add the numbers from above (steps 1 – 5).
Count the number of honor points for AL/Honors and AP
courses. (Count 1 for a 1 credit course, 1.5 for a 1½
credit course, etc.) Add the total number of honor points
to the total (step 6 ) above.
Divide the total (step 7) by the number of credits earned/
attempted. (If including courses from only one semester,
be sure to count them as only .5 when adding up the
total number of credits.)
* If you are computing a GPA that includes grades from only one
semester, count each grade in a 1 credit course as .5, in a 1½
credit course as .75, in a year-long ½ credit course (meets only ½
period all year long) as .25. Do the same with honor points.
Look for PTO Arts program details in upcoming issues of
NCTE AWARD
The National Council of Teachers of
English has awarded senior Madeleine
Lawson with its highest honor
for achievement in writing by high
school students. Madeleine is
among only 540 throughout the
nation chosen as outstanding writers.
She was nominated by her junior
English teacher, Linda Rainer.
Madeleine submitted a piece of her
best writing and also composed an
impromptu essay on a prompt from
the NCTE. Each piece of writing
was read and evaluated by two
judges— one high school and one
college English teacher. The judges’
conscientious and sensitive reading
of the entries ensured that only outstanding
student writers were selected
for the awards.
Hopefully, the above list gives you an idea of
how your PTO spent the money so graciously donated by
parents and our community. It is critical that we partner
together and invest in our children’s classroom expenses
and programs. As you can see, most of the requests made
by faculty were basic teaching tools and curriculum
needs. Thank you for generously giving to our students
and please continue to support our Supply Sale and Cash
for Classroom programs. Together, we can ensure innovative
curriculum and cover our basic needs.
There are several steps to the process of awarding
grants. First the faculty and staff must complete an application
at the beginning of the school year. The applications
must then be approved by the department chair, then
the PTO Budget and Finance Committee. Final approval is
by the PTO Board. The PTO Budget and Finance Committee
is made up of the PTO President, PTO Treasurer and
Treasurer- Elect, a representative from each of our two
fundraisers, the Supply Sale and Cash for Classrooms, a
PTO member at large and our principal. It is chaired by
the PTO President- Elect.
This year the Budget and Finance Committee was
chaired by Linda Barnett and Sandy Johnson. Members of
committee included Kelly Bottcher, Carol Schaffeld, Patti
Moultrie, Donna Vaughn, Tami Bailie and Cas McWaters.
Many thanks to this committee for the time they spent determining
how to best spend the money raised by the PTO.
The goal of the PTO is to balance spending to
touch all children, regardless of their abilities, interests, or
talents. You can feel confident we’ve achieved this goal
and trust you will continue to support these worthy PTO
fundraisers next year. Thank you!
SUMMER COLLEGE APPLICATION
ADVICE FOR RISING SENIORS
Although it is not necessary to apply to colleges until the
fall of the senior year, some students who have made
their college choices choose to apply in the summer before
their senior year. These students need to be aware
of the following.

High school transcripts will be completed and available
for mailing on June 15. Request transcripts
from Mrs. Merrill, the registrar. She can be reached
at merrillsw@vestavia.k12.al.us, 402-5255, or by
seeing her personally at the school. There is a $2.00
charge per transcript.
Most colleges will not have their applications for
Fall 2013 on their websites until July or August. Be
sure you are completing the correct application
(Fall 2013).
Auburn University will begin accepting applications
for Fall 2013 on August 1.
Complete your online application FIRST; then request
your transcript.
“Official” ACT and SAT scores must be sent directly
from the testing agency. Many colleges will
not accept test scores from the high school.
