Each month before I write for the newsletter, I search
my previous year’s articles. First, I want to make sure I
cover specific material, but more importantly, I try not
to be redundant. If you were to search these nuggets of
literary gold, you would actually be amazed at how the
District and I have changed over the past eight years.
attends a number of workshops to enlighten themselves
about school matters. One of these trainings focused on
technology and specifically how to utilize it to help
meetings run more smoothly. This summer, we all took
that challenge, and laptops have now replaced the
monthly notebooks for Board members.
The first and most formidable change is size. Just like
our District, I have gotten larger. This larger size
requires work to be completed a little differently. No
longer can I plan on endurance to complete a job.
Because I simply don’t have the endurance I once did, I
must be smarter in how I actually work. From a school
standpoint, the teachers have become smarter
consumers of educational strategies as well. They look
more to science when implementing something new;
they decipher data to determine if it is working
properly; and finally, they diagnose under-achieving
students with necessary interventions.
My hope is WPPS continues to work at improving our
instruction, we continue to close learning gaps, and
finally, we strive for the success of each student. With
the teachers being the front line of this challenge, we
welcome the following teachers to the team:
Max Morrissey
Tina Clark
Jill Redmond
Steve Swett
Change is inevitable. But as a District, we continue to
change for the better. We continue to focus on what
matters most – the kids. Now if I could just put that
work ethic into losing this gut – life would be roses!
Speaking of roses, a focus this fall and next spring will
be to improve the landscape around the West Point
facility. Arguably we have the best facilities in
northeast Nebraska; it is time for those facilities to shine
more brightly. Beemer Elementary focused on
landscaping following their addition, with great success.
Additional information will be forthcoming –
specifically in requests for volunteers. So please be
prepared to help if you can.
Eight years ago, I came to WPPS looking to make
things “cleaner and leaner,” the leaner part may be a
physical failure, but the cleaner portion is all success.
This philosophy starts with the Board of Education,
who now has very specific policies to guide decision
making. The Board has become much more
knowledgeable about legal matters as well; not because
we are embroiled in them, but because the Board
From 1899 through about 1920, students attending
Beemer Public School (District 55) actually completed
high school graduation requirements in West Point.
Today, students attend Beemer Elementary School
through grade four, completing the rest of their
summer break is just about over and school will start
in a few short weeks. Personally our family has been
busy with softball, sports camps, VBS, and home
projects. I have enjoyed being more directly
involved with our kids this summer and am excited
about the upcoming school year.
I would like to give you a short rundown about what
Students, Parents, and Community Members,
Welcome to August! It is hard to believe that summer vacation is winding down. Hopefully you have had a chance to get away or take a
little time to relax. For me, the summer was cut short by a knee injury, complete with surgery at the end of July. If you see me hobbling
around the first month of school, you will know why.
As summer ends, the excitement of a new school year and fall sports begin. Teams in football, volleyball, cross country, girls golf, and
now softball will get ready to represent WPBHS this fall. Our first practices will begin Monday, August 8 for football, girls golf, and
softball. On Monday, August 15, volleyball and cross country will start practices. If you have any questions about preseason meetings in
August, please call the High School office.
Scrimmage and Parent Meeting night is set for Friday, August 19 with volleyball beginning at 5:00. Parent meetings will begin at 6:00
p.m. in the HS Gym. This year it is MANDITORY that at least one parent/guardian attend the general meetings and individual sport
meetings. All coaches for sports 7-12 will be conducting a team meeting at some point during the 6 o’clock hour.
Parents will also have the chance to join the Cadet Booster Club that night. The Cadet Boosters play a very significant role in our
activities program. The Boosters would like to encourage parents of students at all levels, K-12 to get involved. The Boosters are looking
at projects to help build our elementary sports programs as well as the High School’s. I would like to thank the Booster Club once again
for the purchase of a new sound system for the football field/track area. It was a much needed project, and it should be up and running by
the first game.
Another new service that will be added to Cadet Activities will be texting updates. The Cadet Activities Department has teamed up with
ScoreTrax Prep to offer text message updates for both JV and Varsity athletics. This is also a fundraising opportunity for the Activities
Department. National advertisers, such a Dicks Sports or Adidas, pay ScoreTrax to sign up high schools to this program. The more
subscribers the High Schools get to follow them, the more money each school can make. Long story short, if you can’t make it to all the
games, sign up to get text updates and help the WPBHS athletes at no cost to you. More information will be available in the near future.
It looks to be an exciting year for the Cadets. We look forward to seeing all of you at the games and activities this fall. If you are a parent
or guardian, circle the August 19 th on your calendar and we will see you at the parent meetings. Make sure to join the Booster Club and
help support the kids at all levels. Thanks and see you soon.
Change to School Web Site
Beginning the first part of August, the web site for West Point Public Schools will be upgraded to a newer
web application. While the front page will maintain the current look, nearly every other page on the site
has been redone. This change will provide the public, staff and students with more information, greater
flexibility and more frequent updates done by more staff members instead of just the technology department.
With change comes a short period of finding and fixing our errors. If you find an error on our web
site, please notify me and I will get the error resolved. Our web address will remain the same following
the upgrade, at http://www.wpcadets.org.
Thanks,
FCCLA
FCCLA officers met for their summer meeting to make plans for the coming year. A variety of ideas were brainstormed
and discussed. It was decided to have a dunk tank for the 4 th of July city celebration. A committee was challenged to
get the tank, volunteers for the dunk and set up a schedule. A second plan was to hold a special meeting for potential members.
This was held June 4 th . We had a few new people come and have a fun filled time learning a bit about the organization.
A second summer meeting was held on July 21 st in the park. This meeting helped inform members of plans for the
County Fair.
Three Senior High members attended National Meeting in Anaheim. CA mid-July. Nicole Buse serves as the Nebraska
State Historian and attended a number of special officer training meetings. Paige Adams attended and participated in the National
STAR events. She earned a Silver medal in her Entrepreneurship event. Kara Batenhort also took part in the National
STAR events in the area of Careen Investigation. Kara also earned a silver medal. The three girls attended a number of special
interest sessions, heard several motivational speakers, and learned more about the FCCLA organization.
Once school resumes, we will have a general membership meeting to establish membership for the coming
year. Dues, again, this year will be $25.
***Up-coming events for both the Junior and Senior High Chapters. ***
This year FCCLA will have their food stand and will park cars on Sunday!
Jr. Cadet Football Club
The Activities Department is happy to announce the beginning of a new club. The Jr. Cadet Football Club was formed for the sole purpose
of developing success in football at WPB. We have determined that our kids are simply behind in basic skills as they enter formal
competition. To be competitive in class C-1, the coaches felt the need to introduce students to the sport at a younger age. Developing a club
that would teach students proper and safe techniques as well as basic skills was explored.
With the help of patrons, the Booster Club, and the Activities Department, this club will begin this fall. Since many of the students from St.
Paul’s Elementary School compete with our junior high athletes, this club will welcome the St. Paul students just as we also do in
basketball, volleyball, and track.
To refine the skills taught, the kids in this club will have the opportunity to compete in the Elkhorn Valley Waterloo League (EVW). The
EVW will provide these young athletes with the opportunity to play in eight games of 11-man football. Our kids will compete in a division
with schools such as North Bend, Oakland-Craig, and Tekamah-Herman. Other teams in our division might include schools such as
Arlington, Blair, and Elkhorn, and Bennington. Competing with these schools will provide us with a unique opportunity to watch our kids
grow physically and mentally as they learn the values of winning and losing.
The goals of this club are very simple:
1. To advance West Point-Beemer football by getting more kids the opportunity to play together under the guidance of school coaches.
To provide a foundation for the future success of Cadet Football.
To make football accessible and affordable to the kids who want to play.
There is a lot of momentum in the Cadet Band for the upcoming school year. The number of students in
band has jumped significantly, with at least 15 in the high school band, 25 in eighth grade and a
whopping 40 seventh-graders signed up. In addition, interest in band at the elementary level is very
high. Once again, each fifth- and sixth-grader will take band as part of his/her curricular studies, and
most of them will be playing a school-owned instrument. This was made possible by a generous
donation from the Nielsen Foundation last fall that was used to purchase new band instruments for
student use. We look to continue to increase student interest and achievement in music throughout the
coming year. Great things are in store for the Cadet Band!
Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010-How it affects WPB by Jill Carlson
The nutrition services program of West Point Public Schools is under the authority of the
Federal Department of Agriculture; and the Department of Ag has been coming out
with greater requirements the past several years. We can happily say the WPB food
programs have been implementing these changes even before they are required.
Some of these specific requirements include:
* Serving whole grain bread products * Serving 1% milk only
* Reduction in sodium (salt) consumption * Increase in fruits and vegetables
Each year students express concerns about the lunches served. Our intent is to provide a wellbalanced
meal in a very limited time. Specific exceptions, like food allergies, are made but do
require a medical statement which is required to be updated annually.
Other concerns students bring up is the amount of ‘breaded meats’ we serve. In short, breaded
meat products increase the amount of whole grain servings offered and since we are required
to provide a minimum number of grain/bread items per week; these meals help us meet that
requirement.
Our menus are checked for certain vitamins, iron, calcium, and sodium requirements. As I said,
we try to serve a well-balanced meal in a very short amount of time; while meeting or
exceeding the Department of Ag’s requirements.
Monthly I plan to provide a short article in the newsletter about requirements, meals, and even
expenses. Hopefully this information will help everyone understand the mission of the nutrition
services programs.
Free and Reduced lunch applications for the 2011-12 school year have
been mailed. The sheet for self-employed income was inadvertently
left out of the packet. If you need one of these forms, please call
your school office or the District Office and we will mail one to you.

On the student’s order that is free, you’ll just write the name, grade, school of the two siblings you PAID FOR.
If you do have siblings in other West Point Schools, it is important to:
return their orders to the school which they attend
by that school’s due date.
Payment: Please enclose the exact payment of each child with their respective order forms.
If you have more than one child DO NOT combine payments, or your order may be delayed.
Retakes: There will also be a retake day, so if you don’t care for either of your poses, you may have a free retake.
The retakes come with 2 proofs, just like the first set.
Parents and Cadet Fans
This year the Booster Club will again be very active in supporting all the students of West Point-Beemer Public Schools.
In the past years the Booster Club has helped raise funds for bleachers, uniforms, band room chairs, wrestling mats,
weight room equipment, and awards Scholarships to 5 Graduating Seniors. The Booster Club also hosts the Homecoming
Dance, Senior and Parent Nights and numerous other activities.
The main sources of revenue for the Booster Club are membership dues and concession stand sales. For the 2011-2012
school year, the Booster Club will continue to give recognition to its members by listing them on activity programs.
Several schools have set up different levels of contributions so we also decided to follow this model of membership while
adding a Cadet twist.
$ 20 - $ 39 Cadet $ 40 - $ 59 Cadet Leader
$ 60 - $ 99 Cadet Chief $ 100 + Cadet Commander (1 Activity Pass Included)
We would like to extend an extra Thank You to those members who helped out in the concession stand duties last year
and encourage any new or renewing members to volunteer for the upcoming school year. At the bottom of this form is a
membership form that may be mailed to the address below. With your assistance we can continue to do great things for
all our students.
Thank You.
Do utilize parental controls provided by your Internet Service Provider
and/or blocking software. (Contact your Internet ISP if you have
questions).
Do periodically review your child’s computer and emails. You should
have your child’s password.
Do spend time with your child online. Have them show you their
you would their real-life friends. Learn to navigate the web.
Do not post personal information online (name, age, birth date,
address, telephone number, or school name). This information can
be used by others to find out where you and your family live.
Do not post your picture online – it can be copied or changed or used
to find you.
Do not post your plans and activities in a chat room or on your
personal website.
Do not communicate with someone who has made you
uncomfortable or afraid. Tell your parents or a trusted adult if
someone does.
Do not meet with someone you met online without first telling your
parents or guardian.
Do not respond to hurtful or inappropriate messages.
Do remember that people can lie online and say they are something
they are not. Someone who says they are a 12-year-old girl could
really be an older man looking to harm you.
Do save messages that upset you and show them to your parents.
Do share your password with your parents.
Do visit www.netsmartz.org to learn more about Internet safety.
