Watch Skipjacks Compete at Cambridge Race on September 21st
Long Wharf in Cambridge will offer
free riverside views of vessels competing in
the 17th Annual Choptank Heritage Skipjack
Race on Saturday, September 21. The
race begins at 10am following a parade of
skipjacks out of Cambridge Creek. The
start/finish line is just off Long Wharf, allowing
spectators close-up views of the action.
Bleacher seating will be available there
during the race, as well as food and gift vendors
and information booths. Bill Smith will
fire his cannon to salute the vessels during
the parade and signal the official race start.
A radio-controlled skipjack regatta held by
members of the Model Sailing Club of the
Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will
provide entertainment while the full-size
skipjacks are on the middle legs of their
race.
Thomas Parker is bringing his traditional
buyboat, Thomas J, down from
Chestertown to serve as the race committee
boat. About eight skipjacks are expected to
compete this year, with final numbers dependent
on vessels’ condition and schedule
availability.
The boats compete for pride, not prize,
with each participating skipjack receiving
equal show-up money, derived from sponsorships
and donations. The skipjack Nathan
of Dorchester, acting as host vessel for the
event, donates her portion back to the race
to allow larger awards to the other skipjacks.
The winning skipjack and her captain’s
names are engraved on the permanent Chop-
tank Heritage Cup Trophy, established and
sponsored by the National Bank of Cambridge.
The trophy is kept on display at the
Dorchester County Visitor Center. The winning
captain receives a smaller version of
the trophy. Capt. Ed Farley won the 2012
race with his skipjack, H.M. Krentz.
Craig’s Drug Store is sponsoring the
Captains and Crew Reception at Snappers
Waterfront Café in Cambridge on Friday,
September 20, from 6 to 8pm. The public is
invited to come out and meet the participants
while supporting efforts to keep these traditional
Chesapeake Bay oyster-dredging vessels
alive and sailing. Reception tickets are
$25 if purchased in advance or $30 after
September 14 and are available online
through the current-race page of the
Nathan’s website, www.skipjack-nathan.org.
Craig’s Drug Store also sponsors this
year’s race t-shirt, available at Craig’s in
Cambridge, at the reception, at Long Wharf
during the race, or at the Nathan’s booth at
the Dorchester Arts Showcase in Cambridge
on Sunday, September 22. Race programs
and 50/50 raffle tickets will be available at
the reception and booth locations. The winning
raffle ticket is drawn during the Showcase
on Sunday. All proceeds support the
race and participating skipjacks.
In addition to the National Bank of
Cambridge and Craig’s, other major annual
sponsors are the Nathan Foundation, the
Dorchester Skipjack Committee, and Snappers
Waterfront Café, where the post-race
luncheon and trophy presentation take place,
as well as this year’s reception.
Tri Gas & Oil has signed on as a Boat
Sponsor. Other early sponsor commitments
include Cambridge Rotary Club, The J.M.
Clayton Company and Delmarva Printing.
Additional sponsors and donors are welcome
and encouraged to contact Race Chairman
Lou Hyman at 410-330-6634 for
details.
Tom Wallace
to our family
State of Maryland has preserved 221 acres
in Dorchester County along the Harriet Tubman
Underground Railroad National Historical
Park and Scenic Byway. Governor
Martin O’Malley and the Board of Public
Works approved funding to preserve the
land through a Coastal Resilience Easement.
“Because of our State’s vulnerability to
sea level rise ─ especially in our coastal
communities ─ we must now consider the
possible impacts of flooding and storm surge
when we look to conserve our open space,”
said Governor O’Malley. “This first-of-itskind
easement will not only protect a significant
natural and historic area from
development, it also includes requirements
that address the threat of climate change.”
A new element under Program Open
Space, Coastal Resilience Easements are designed
to protect areas that may be prone to
high waters and storm surge by permanently
eliminating development, restricting impervious
surfaces, protecting areas that allow
wetlands to migrate, and requiring periodic
updates ─ all of which can help natural areas
more quickly recover from flooding.
This easement will conserve a significant
historic site along the Harriet Tubman
Underground Railroad National Historical
Park and Scenic Byway, including the
Brodess Plantation where Tubman was once
enslaved. Located less than a mile from
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, the
property features sensitive and important
forests, farmlands and wetlands and includes
habitat for the endangered Delmarva Fox
Squirrel and Forest Interior Dwelling birds.
Also known as the Lake Property, the
easement was made possible thanks to the
Late Victoria Lake Waters, Millie Lake,
Benito and Barbara Lake, Ellen Bronte Lake
and Edward James.
The Maryland Department of Natural
Resources and the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy
will work together to manage the
area. In April the Maryland Environmental
Trust and the Conservancy permanently protected
226 acres of farmland along the
byway.
Over the past century, Maryland has
seen approximately one foot of relative sea
level rise and the disappearance of 13 bay
islands. To better protect coastal areas
threatened by encroaching waters, DNR
now reviews all land acquisitions for climate
change impacts. Climate change and coastal
data used in development of the easement is
available to the public through Maryland’s
Coastal Atlas. More on protecting coastal
habitats can be found on the Chesapeake and
Coastal Service website.
The three-member Board of Public
Works is composed of Governor O’Malley
(chair), Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller
Peter Franchot. BPW is authorized by
the General Assembly to approve major construction
and consultation contracts, equipment
purchases, property transactions and
other procurement transactions.
Save the Date –
Shelter Century
Fall Foliage Ride –
October 19th
The Talbot Interfaith Shelter announces
the second annual Shelter Century Fall Foliage
Ride to be held on October 19, 2013 at
8:00 am. The event will feature three separate
rides, an 11 mile family fun ride, a 31
mile fitness ride and a metric century (62.5
mile) ride. Proceeds will benefit the Talbot
Interfaith Shelter (TIS), a cold weather
homeless shelter in Talbot County, MD.
The fall foliage ride takes cyclists
through five picturesque waterside villages
in Talbot County, sharing the view with
skipjacks, local watermen and sailboat races
on the Miles River and the Chesapeake Bay.
Starting and ending at the St. Michaels Elementary
School, the town of St. Michaels
offers cyclists and their families shopping,
dining and historic lodging. The event is a
ride, not a race, and is fun for the entire family.
Rest stops will be available for all
courses with light food, refreshments and
restrooms provided.
All cyclists are treated with homemade
pies of every kind at the end of the event,
and cyclists on the 31 mile and 62.5 mile
rides are invited to join TIS at St. Michaels
Crab and Steak House for free beer and crab
balls on the town’s waterfront afterwards.
The Talbot Interfaith Shelter is dedicated
both to providing safe, temporary shelter
to men, women, and children who lack
adequate housing, and to raising awareness
of the issues of homelessness in Talbot
County. Fifteen faith communities rotate the
homeless shelter through their church facilities
during the cold weather months. Over
500 volunteers from the faith communities
have worked together since 2008 to keep
neighbors off the streets and in warm beds
during the winter. Sponsors and cyclists participating
in the event will directly help provide
shelter to the homeless during the cold
weather months.
To register for the event, visit the Shelter
Century website
(www.sheltercentury.org). For information
about the Talbot Interfaith Shelter, see their
website (www.talbotinterfaithshelter.org).
A case of Eastern equine encephalitis
for EEE which, like West Nile virus, is
spread by mosquitoes. Officials remind
Marylanders to take precautions to protect
themselves and their families from mosquito
bites to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
EEE is spread by the bite of an infected
mosquito and can cause a swelling of the
brain (encephalitis). The disease is rare in
humans, but can occur when an infected
mosquito bites a person. EEE disease occurs
primarily in areas close to swamps and
marshes with high mosquito populations.
The last confirmed human case in Maryland
was in 1989, and prior to that there were two
cases in 1982. The last confirmed case in a
horse in Maryland was in 2009 in Wicomico
County.
Although EEE occurs in humans less
frequently than West Nile virus (WNV), it
can be more serious. Only a subset of people
infected with either virus develop neurological
illness, however of those who develop
neurological illness, approximately onethird
of all EEE-infected persons may die
compared to fewer than 10 percent who die
following WNV neurological illness. EEE
survivors can have long-term damage to the
nervous system.
Typical symptoms of EEE in humans
include fever, headache, mental confusion,
nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, joint pain,
and sometimes seizures and coma. Individuals
reporting these symptoms should be referred
to their health care provider.
Symptoms usually occur four to 10 days
after exposure to a mosquito carrying the
virus. There is neither a specific treatment
nor a vaccine available for use in humans infected
with EEE virus.
In horses, EEE is a serious disease that
can be fatal; however, well vaccinated
horses are generally safe from the disease.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture
(MDA) encourages all horse owners to consult
with their veterinarian to discuss the
best vaccination program for their horse and
its circumstances. The horse in Worcester
County had not been vaccinated. Infected
horses show a range of clinical signs that
often progress over two to three days, including
depression, altered mental status,
circling, problems with balance, weakness,
aimless wandering, impaired vision, walking
(gait) abnormalities, head pressing,
paralysis, convulsions and death. Horses that
survive serious disease often have permanent
nervous system deficits.
Measures people can take to protect
themselves from diseases spread by mosquitoes
include:
• Avoid areas of high mosquito activity
• Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities at
dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most
active
• Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and
hats to reduce mosquito exposure
• Use an EPA-registered insect repellent according
to package directions
Nile virus and other mosquito-borne viruses,
Chicken and
Eggs
By Terry Callahan
Arrive at Kathy MacSorley’s Gingersnap
Farm in Trappe and you just may be
greeted by a Chicken Nugget. Or two. Or
more. Make sure to close your car door, or
one of these may want to go for a ride.
Kathy owns a flock of seventy free-range
chickens. Even if you don’t see them at first,
you will hear their gentle clucking as they
forage over the thirty-acre farm, supplementing
their organic feed with their discoveries.
A little red hen "supervises" Kathy
MacSorley on her computer.
Kathy is also a baker who sells her
baked goods and fresh eggs at the Easton
Farmers Market. She began raising chickens
with no prior experience. “I started freerange
for their eggs. As a baker, I use a lot of
eggs.” She gathers eggs twice a day, usually
around three dozen daily, which she washes
and refrigerates. “They’re so pretty; I just
love them,” she says. And indeed, these
fresh eggs are reminiscent of Easter because
they range in color from dark to light blue,
to green, yellow, pink, light and dark brown,
speckled, and white. Kathy explains that
eggs from free-range chickens are lower in
cholesterol and higher in the “good” fat.
They are much different than regular eggs.
For example, she points out that commercial
eggs have pale yellow yolks, but the yolks
on her free-range eggs are dark orange.
Of course, she didn’t start off getting
this many eggs, since she had a much
smaller flock. For her first group of chick-
(continued on page 21)
20

continued from page 20
Chicken and Eggs
ens she ordered fifty eggs that were then incubated.
Unfortunately for egg production,
twenty-six of the hatched chicks were roosters.
Throughout a year, some chickens are
lost to bad weather or predators such as
foxes, so she is always replenishing her
stock. Breeds in her flock include Rhode Island
Reds (probably the friendliest of the
breeds, she feels), Barred Rock, Plymouth
Rock, Red Link, Polish (which have a big
tuft of feathers on their heads that causes
them to run into things because they can’t
see as well), Black Star and Americana
chickens.
A piece of advice that Kathy has for
anyone thinking of raising chickens or
adding to an existing flock is to have a different
pen for the newcomers. “Nobody told
me they [chickens from different broods]
don’t get along,” she says. “I never expected
the reaction I got when I introduced the new
chickens.” The established group of chickens
behaved aggressively toward the
younger chickens and a quick separation of
flocks was needed.
She also has two stalwart overseers of
the flock, her main roosters, Jack and Roo.
A rooster acts as a flock’s protector. “He will
call the hens over when he finds food. He
will pick up a piece of bread and feed it to a
hen.” Roo starts to round up the flock as it
starts getting dusk, very much like a sheepdog
herds sheep. He moves the flock to the
coop and then leads them in.
The other chickens are all named
Chicken Nugget because there are just “too
many of them to name each separately”.
Though the names may be the same, each
chicken is an individual. “They are different,”
says Kathy. “They each have a different
personality. Some want to be picked up
and cuddled, some love to be held like a
baby and get their tummies rubbed, and
some want nothing to do with you. They follow
me around like puppies.”
One chicken, a little red hen, will hop
in Kathy’s van and loves to go for a ride
while sitting on a headrest. “I get so many
funny looks; then people realize it’s a
chicken,” laughs Kathy. The same hen will
sit next to her as she works on the computer.
After a while, the bird will start to peck at
the keys, imitating Kathy’s movements.
Some chickens like to watch television.
“They are fascinated by the movement and
stand there and watch it.”
A common assumption is that chickens
are not very smart. Not so, says Kathy. The
chickens are a natural alarm system. “They
know when a stranger is on the property and
make more noise. They’re smarter than you
think, incredibly challenging and very curious.
They will watch me do something for a
long time and then figure out how to do it.”
For example, after observing Kathy, one
21
chicken has taught itself how to unlock the
cage.
If you’d like to talk with her about the
chickens, eggs or baked goods, Kathy Mac-
Sorley can be found at the Easton Farmers
Market or reached at 410-310-3407.
Easton resident and award-winning author
David Mercier returns to kick off the
Eastern Shore Writers' Association's new
year and first get-together with inspiring
new words of wisdom and autographed
copies of A Beautiful Medicine available for
purchase. Discussing "The Power of Insinuation
in Speaking and Writing", David will
illustrate how "much of the truth in communication
happens under the radar of the
spoken and written word." He will guide
members and guests in how understanding
"the implications that we continually make,
often unintentionally, is essential in learning
to communicate in the best way possible,
both in speaking and writing." By the
end of the meeting listeners will learn how
to be more identify these implications and
then how to be more conscious of them in
order to use them to their advantage.
"My passion is for evoking the soul of
human experience," David says, "and my
purpose is to present lectures and workshops
that are warm, informal, light-hearted
but substantive. Inspiring and illuminating,
they add value to the lives of the listeners in
substantive ways . . . the concepts are always
made practical, and listeners will learn
specific tools they can implement immediately
in their lives."
Author of the award-winning book A
Beautiful Medicine - a Radical Look at the
Essence of Health and Healing (Still Pond
Press, 2012), David has also been published
in Orthopedic Technology Review, The
Journal of Maryland Acupuncture Society,
and a variety of newspapers and publications.
An experienced lecturer on acupuncture,
health and healing, David is a graduate
of the Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, and
holds a Master's Degree in Organization
Development from the Weatherhead School
of Management at Case Western Reserve
University.
"Many of my colleagues and volunteers
have begun practicing David's ideas
and it's made a tremendous difference in the
way they approach their lives and their
work," Susan Piggot, Volunteer Coordinator
at the Talbot Hospice Foundation said
Shore Regional
Health Pain Clinic
Offers Free
Course for People
with Chronic Pain
More Americans suffer from chronic
pain than from diabetes, stroke, coronary
disease and cancer combined, according to
the National Academy of Science’s Institute
of Medicine. The suffering takes many
forms, as more than 70 percent of those reporting
chronic pain indicate that depression,
poor concentration and/or low energy
are among the effects.
Traditionally, the medical approach to
pain has been to identify and treat the cause.
However, a recent report from the Institute
of Medicine shows chronic pain can outlast
the illness or injury that caused it, altering
the nervous system so that pain – persistent
and amplified -- becomes its own disease.
Research also has shown that individuals
dealing with chronic pain can benefit
from strategies that help them manage it.
One of the more successful programs, The
Chronic Pain Self Management Program
(CPSMS), is a six-week interactive program
that will be offered at the University of
Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton’s
Pain Center beginning Thursday, September
19. The program is provided free of charge,
with the optional purchase of a workbook
for $20.
Taught by Barbara V. Jarrell, coordinator
for the Mid-Shore Chronic Disease Self
Management Program, the course includes
techniques to deal with problems such as
frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep;
appropriate exercise; appropriate use of
medications; effective communication techniques;
nutrition; pacing activity and rest;
and how to evaluate new treatments.
According to Cathy Asche, BSN, RN-
BC, clinical coordinator for UM Shore Regional
Health’s Pain Center, CMSP was first
developed in Canada in the mid 1990s, and
subsequently adapted and refined by the
staff of Stanford’s Patient Education Center.
Research studies conducted by clinics where
CMSP has been provided have shown that
overall, compared to patients who have not
taken the program, those who have report
Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction
Course Offered
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
(MBSR) will be offered in an eight-week
evening course this Fall by the Shore Regional
Health’s Center for Integrative Medicine
in Easton. Course participants will
learn how to cope with health issues and find
peace of mind by working with the same
stresses and pains that are the source of their
discomfort. The course includes meditation,
body awareness and gentle stretching
(movement will be adapted to accommodate
those with physical limitations).
The MBSR course instructor is Larissa
Kitenko, PharmD, clinical pharmacist for
Shore Regional Health, who has taught the
class 13 times in the past eight years and is
skilled at creating a safe, supportive and
deeply engaging learning environment. In
Kitenko’s observation, MBSR is “very beneficial
for people who are struggling with
life’s obligations, pressures or worries, and
also for those experiencing chronic pain or
illness, heart conditions, high blood pressure,
headaches, sleep problems or anxiety.”
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
will meet Tuesdays, 6:00-8:30pm, September
10-October 29. An all-day (9am-4pm)
class on Saturday, October 19 is also required.
Tuition is $300, and a deferred payment
plan is offered as well as limited
financial assistance for qualified applicants.
continued from page 30
Chronic Pain
not only less pain and dependence on others,
but more vitality or energy, higher activity
levels, improved mental health, and
greater overall satisfaction with life.
“It’s important to note that CPMSP program
is designed to enhance and complement
rather than replace other pain treatment
programs, says Asche. “The goal is help
people dealing with pain coordinate and
manage various aspects of their health,
which will enable them to be more active in
their lives.”
Advance registration for the CPMSP is
required due to limited class size. For information
with stress, anger, guilt and sadness and
the changes in roles and relationships resulting
from loss. There is no charge for the
class which offers practical help on how to
gather the strength to move forward again.
Losing a loved one can open up a wide
range of feelings related to the unique relationship
with the one who has died. Everyone
has the right to grieve in his or her own
way. Studies show that acknowledging and
sharing thoughts and feelings reduces loneliness
and supports the healing process. We
learn that we are not alone, that others are in
a comparable situation with similar reactions
and that we feel better by reaching out to one
another.
The six week ‘Looking Ahead’ support
group will be followed by the return of a
monthly group called ‘The Next Chapter’,
a support group which will meet the first
Tuesday of each month, at the same loca-
“Despite most mothers wanting to
breastfeed, many of them come across challenges
that can prevent them from achieving
their breastfeeding goals,” says Carol
Leonard, one of Shore Regional Health’s
certified lactation consultants. “The goal of
this breastfeeding support group is to provide
our new mothers with a mother to
mother support group where they can freely
share concerns and questions to make their
breastfeeding journey a successful one.”
The Breastfeeding Support Group
meets on the first Tuesday of each month
from 10 am to 11:30 am at UM Shore Medical
Center at Easton. Meetings are held adjacent
to the Birthing Center, in the 5th floor
Requard Social Center.
"As lactation consultants, we help families
deal with common concerns such as
how to start breastfeeding successfully and
how to return to work while breastfeeding,”
says Karen Van Trieste. “Bringing together
other moms who are going through the same
transitions can provide an additional resource
for breastfeeding mothers.”
In addition to the support group, Shore
Regional Health offers a number of resources
for new mothers.
"We offer ‘rooming in’ for all mothers,
and we encourage placing the baby skin-toskin
with mom at delivery and feeding
within one hour of birth. These practices
have been shown to increase breastfeeding,”
says Patty MacDougall, MSN, RNC-OB,
Manager of Women's and Children's Services.
“With our full-time lactation services
and the support group, we will continue to
help assure that our new mothers have all the
tools necessary have a successful breastfeeding
experience.”
Breastfeeding and prenatal education
and support is available to both new and expectant
mothers. The Birthing Center, whose
nursing team is comprised of nurses certified
in a variety of prenatal specialties, offers
lactation consultant services almost 24
hours a day.
Ares Sport Rub, which is an all-natural painrelieving
cream for athletes. The sports rub,
formulated by physical therapist Scott
36
Hazuda, is an all-natural analgesic intended
for the temporary relief of muscle and joint
pain.
The creation of Ares Sports Rub arose
from physical therapist Scott Hazuda’s frustration
with other topical pain relieving
creams and lotions on the market. Not only
did Hazuda find these products to be less effective
than they claim to be; he also found
that they are loaded with harsh and potentially
harmful chemicals and synthetics.
Hazuda took it upon himself to formulate
and manufacture a sports rub that was both
effective and all-natural that would appeal
to athletes; however, it provides temporary
relief for anyone over the age of twelve experiencing
arthritic pain, backache, muscle
and joint pain due to overuse, tendonitis, and
bursitis. Hazuda chose the name Ares as
Ares is the Greek god of war and Ares
Sports Rub is the warrior in pain relief.
Scott Hazuda, president and developer
of Ares Sports Rub has worked in the field
of orthopedic physical therapy for almost 20
years and is currently a practicing and licensed
orthopedic physical therapist in
Maryland. Hazuda remarks, “My true passion
is helping others. This was my primary
goal in the creation of Ares Sports Rub. My
second goal was to create a sports rub that
had the potential to be safer when used by
physical therapists on patients, specifically
safer for the physical therapist. We treat so
many patients during the day our hands are
constantly covered by sports rubs. As an orthopedic
physical therapist, I’ve used many
different products on the market, experiencing
frustration with most. I felt that an allnatural,
effective product was exactly what
the physical therapy industry needed.”
After recognizing that many of the
products on the market were primarily filler
with some active ingredients, Hazuda extensively
researched which specific ingredients
would make a superior pain relieving
sports rub. After many sample batches, he
finally perfected his formula with active ingredients
menthol and methyl salicylate, as
well as homeopathic ingredients, including
camphor, eucalyptus, yucca, arnica, and
comfrey extracts. Ares Sports Rub is also
cruelty free, never testing on animals, never
using animal products and never using individual
ingredients that were tested on animals.
TALBOT GUIDE
Life of Bees—will appear at the Avalon Theatre
with her daughter and co-author, Ann
Kidd Taylor, on Friday, October 4, for the
seventh in the popular “Women & Girls
Fund Presents” speaker series.
The announcement that the mother and
daughter team is coming to the Mid-Shore
has already struck a chord with area readers,
says Scotti Oliver, assistant director of the
Talbot County Free Library. In response,
Oliver and her staff have scheduled a book
discussion event on September 23, as well
as a screening of the film, The Secret Life of
Bees, on September 16. (For more information,
call 410-822-1626.)
Kidd and Taylor will talk about their
travels together in Greece and France, when
they appear at the Avalon, and they’ll also
discuss their evolving relationship. Oliver
says both topics are at the center of their recent
book, Traveling with Pomegranates.
“Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter are
the dynamic duo of mother-daughter authors,”
Oliver said. “Seldom do you find a
mother and daughter joining forces to tell a
story, and Traveling with Pomegranates is a
wonderful story of travel, mythology, changing
lives and reconnecting. That’s why people
will come to programs at the library and
at the Avalon; there’s something there for
everybody.”
Traveling with Pomegranates followed
The Secret Life of Bees onto the New York
Times bestseller list when it was published
in 2009. In some ways a travel tale and in
others a memoir, the book relates the stories
of two women, a mother in her 50s and her
daughter in her 20s, each at a crossroads,
“on a quest to rediscover herself and one another.”
Beth Spurry, president of the Women &
Girls Fund and mother of a teenage daughter,
said she is especially looking forward to
the Kidd-Taylor appearance because their
topics are both universally and personally
interesting.
“The Women & Girls Fund is about the
importance of women and girls in our families,
our neighborhoods, our workplaces and
our communities,” Spurry said. “I loved
reading Pomegranates, I’ve discussed the
book with friends, and now I’m eager to
meet these two remarkable women so we all
can continue this conversation about one of
life’s deepest connections.”
Avid reader Susan Simmons of Caroline
County says she’s already bought two
tickets for the October event, for herself and
a favorite aunt, because she wants to hear
and meet Kidd and Taylor. She says Traveling
with Pomegranates echoed her own
coming of age experience.
“I am going because I love good writing
and I appreciate the remarkable relationships
a mother and daughter can have,”
Simmons said. Traveling with Pomegranates
invited me to recall similar periods of
change in my own life, so I am grateful for
their words and sharing; their journey helped
me gain a deeper perspective of my own
journey.”
General admission for the Kidd-Taylor
appearance at the Avalon is $50; preferred
seating area is $60; and tickets that include
My husband and I stood on a secluded
beach in Maui, our toes wiggling in the soft
sand, as a Hawaiian minister preformed our
The Other Side of the Mug
wedding ceremony. Our only guest was the
photographer, who snapped pictures of us
against the brilliant backdrop of waves and
sunset.
This photo is an old postcard of downtown Longwoods. Who would have
guessed that it was once so busy? Today Longwoods consists of a few houses,
one church, and the little red schoolhouse. Both the Post Office and a second
church have been converted into private homes, and the stores are all gone.
Photo provided by Historical Society of Talbot County
During our week in Maui, we shared
many adventures including snorkeling, an authentic
luau-complete with dancers and a raising
of the pig ceremony-and a couple trips
down the infamously narrow Road to Hanna,
where we hiked through a bamboo forest and
searched for waterfalls.
At the Seven Sacred Pools, laughter of
children playing in the tropical water filled our
ears, as we ascended to the first tier. Our eyes
were amazed at the endless view of lush foliage
visible from that height. Another waterfall
called out to us from above, as the water
poured down from the rocks. The area was
empty of tourists and fairly secluded, the perfect
spot for blissful newlyweds to enjoy a romantic
sunset.
When we approached the top waterfall,
my husband saw an object glistening in the
sand and picked it up in disbelief. “Hold out
your hand.” I couldn’t quite read the excitement
on his face. Expecting a disgusting slug
or worm, I decided to trust him and hesitantly
received his gift: a gold tennis bracelet with a
carat worth of diamonds.
We didn’t bring home many souvenirs
from our honeymoon, but my favorite, even
more so than the bracelet, is a set of coffee
(continued from page 42)
mugs we bought ourselves at a Starbucks in
Lahaina. I’m taken back to those early days of
our marriage every time I take a sip of tea from
mine.
Almost in tears one morning, I stood at
our kitchen sink staring down at my mug; my
hands still covered with the bubbles that betrayed
me. The cheap bowl from Wal-mart was
fine. My irreplaceable treasure it had landed
on was not. A huge chunk was missing from
the rim and down one side, revealing the rough
clay below the smooth finish. After surviving
almost five years of daily use, one slip from
soapy hands and my honeymoon memento
was ruined.
My first thought was how big, ugly, and
hard to miss the chip was. Then I realized that
I still loved the mug; despite the imperfection,
I wasn’t ready to give up on it. I decided to try
gluing the larger chips back on and to not
dwell on it.
As I enjoyed my hot tea this morning, it
dawned on me that my mug was similar to
marriage. I loved it from the beginning. It reminded
me of the good and adventurous time
we experienced together. Now it was damaged.
Old. Broken.
Yes, the newness of our life together may
be gone and we’ve settled into a routine.
Maybe, at times, even a rut or two. How many
times had I caused damage to my relationship
with my beloved husband? Too many to count,
I’m sure.
Many couples have experienced the
same thing in their relationships. Things start
out as diamond bracelets and waterfalls, only
to become a disappointing reality of mundaneness.
Often times when arguments, stress, and
tension chip away at us, we feel the temptation
to throw in the towel. To simply give up on
each other and all that we’ve shared, all that
we will share.
How am I able to continue enjoying my
mug? I drink from the other side. Sure, the
chink is still there, but I fixed it the best I
could. It will never be perfect and new again,
but I still love it. I could easily throw it in the
trash and reach for one of the numerous mugs
crowded in my kitchen cupboard, but this is
the one I chose as special. This is the one that
captured my heart, just like the man it reminds
me of each morning.
Love is full of choices. God wants us to
choose to love each other. Once you have
made the commitment of marriage, you will
never find true fulfillment through it as long as
failure is an option. It is so easy to cloud our
judgment by focusing on the imperfections of
our mates. I’m not suggesting to ignore and
turn a blind eye to problems in life. We need to
address issues and deal with them as best as
we can through prayer and in love. Then we
need to drink from the other side of the mug.
Open Call for
3-D Artists for
TCVAC’s September
“The 3rd
Dimension Show”
The Talbot County Visual Arts Center
is having a 3-dimensional art show September
2013, entitled “The 3rd Dimension”.
This will coincide with the celebration of
TCVAC’s grand opening of their new art
center. “This exhibit will be a very important
art show for the new location of our Arts
Center. We want to invite ALL artists who
have taken their art to a 3rd dimension to
apply to the show!” commented President
Jacquelyn Pfaff-Pratt.
The criteria for this show is simple: the
work is to be 3-Dimensional, i.e., not a
painting, photograph or a drawing, unless it
is a part of a 3-D structure. But it could be a
relief piece that hangs on the wall or an object
of art on a stand or in a case. 3-D can be
anything from a piece of jewelry, to a ceramic
pot, to a wall hanging, weaving, found
art objects, etc. Truly the sky is the limit, as
long as you provide a way for the item to be
hung or displayed easily by the set-up committee.
There is a $15 entry fee for each artist
and you may exhibit 3 pieces of art. You
don’t have to be a member of TCVAC (although
they would love to have you, as their
Membership Drive is currently underway
and it’s only $35/year). Check out their website
www.talbot-art-center.org for more of
their upcoming events and membership
form.
Drop off your art September 3rd Tuesday
from 3-5pm at The Arts Center located
at 10 S. Hanson Street in the Easton Biz and
Artz Center. If you are interested in participating
in this show and have questions,
please contact Jacquelyn Pfaff-Pratt at pfaffpratt@msn.com,
or by calling 443-385-
0411.
The show will open on September 7th,
Saturday, with the “Grand Opening of the
New Art Center Reception” from 5-7 pm.
The exhibit will run through the month of
September, closing on September 28th. All
art will then be ready for pick up on Monday,
September 30th from 3-5 pm.
