Message from
the Dean
Dear Prospective Student,
Our School of Social Work is distinguished
by its emphasis on preparation for clinical
practice, by its high educational standards,
and by a school culture that values and is
shaped by its diversity. We are proud of our
100-year history of leadership in social work
education and our role in shaping the social
work profession.
Simmons is still leading the way today. We
have on our faculty a Fulbright Scholar, two
Hartford Scholars, two past presidents of
the Massachusetts Chapter of the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW),
one past national NASW president, and
the current president of the International
Federation of Social Workers.
Faculty research and scholarly interests span
a broad array of issues: domestic violence,
health care disparities, trauma, HIV/AIDS,
child welfare, social work leadership, gerontology,
evidence-based practice, ethics,
genetics, and immigration. Our innovative
M.S.W. Program includes a social action
requirement, opportunities for international
study, an Urban Leadership certificate option,
and clinical field education placements
in nearly 300 varied social service settings.
We provide opportunities for students to
focus their studies in one of four areas
of clinical specialization. Our new B.S.W.
Program is designed to prepare social workers
for generalist practice and to provide
a strong foundation for social work career
advancement.
Our Doctoral Program prepares experienced
social workers for careers in research and
higher education. Most importantly, Simmons
attracts people who want to work
directly with individuals, families, and communities
and who understand that the profession’s
commitment to social justice often
requires practitioners to have a high level of
social activism and civic engagement.
Daily, our students, faculty, and alumni work
to effect social change and improve lives.
We will encourage and challenge you to do
the same. I invite you to consider Simmons
for your social work education. We are
confident that you will feel supported and
inspired by our vibrant academic community
and will leave us well-prepared to engage
in professional social work practice.
