In more ways than one, 2011 has been a significant year for QFleet. We started the year facing one of the worst natural disasters in Australia’s history. The floods and Cyclone Yasi caused widespread devastation around the state. Almost three quarters of Queensland was flooded at the peak of the disaster. But the QFleet team stood up to the challenge and worked around the clock to meet the unprecedented need for the emergency supply of vehicles across the state. I commend the team’s professionalism and flexibility that made a significant contribution to the government’s recovery efforts. In July 2011 we celebrated an important milestone in QFleet’s journey – QFleet’s 20 Year Anniversary! It was a very special day for QFleet. We reminisced about our journey since 1991, with many ex-QFleeters who joined us in celebrating the achievements of the last two decades. Throughout the year, we continued to make progress in a number of challenging initiatives, particularly in the areas of emissions reduction, fleet safety and fleet efficiency. Our focus on the environmental performance of the government fleet remained strong. I am pleased to report that since 2007, annualised carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced progressively and, by 30 November 2011, we had achieved a 29.9% reduction. However, the work is not finished yet. In order to meet the challenging target of a 50% reduction in emissions by 2017, we need to continue working on improving the environmental profile of the fleet and strive towards best practice fleet management. The Electric Vehicle Evaluation Program is one of QFleet’s latest environmental initiatives. The aim of the Program is to help assess the suitability of electric vehicles (EVs) for the government fleet by enabling agencies to gain a hands-on experience of the technology. Following the introduction of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in 2010, the Nissan LEAF is the latest EV being incorporated in the Program. Like the i-MiEV, the LEAF is a pure electric vehicle, powered exclusively by a battery. In collaboration with Nissan Australia, we organised an information session for our clients, staff and government executives in December, to give them an opportunity to take a close look at the vehicle. We look forward to accepting the first LEAF for the fleet in mid 2012. As the New Year rolls in, it is time to focus on the future. We will continue to provide our clients with the vehicles, information and tools they need to maintain an efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly fleet. I thank our suppliers for their ongoing support in enabling QFleet to provide this service. I hope you enjoy this edition of Journey. 2 QFleet Journey QFleet EV Evaluation Program adopts Nissan LEAF In support of the Queensland Government’s commitment to reduce Queensland’s carbon footprint, QFleet is actively evaluating and adopting sustainable fleet management solutions such as electric vehicles (EVs). QFleet’s EV Evaluation Program is an initiative to assess the suitability of EVs for the Queensland Government fleet by providing agencies with hands-on, real world experience of these vehicles on the cutting edge of low-emissions technology. environmental profile of the government fleet.” To give QFleet clients, staff and other stakeholders an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new EV, QFleet organised an information session in collaboration with Nissan Australia to showcase the vehicle. The session took place on 14 December 2011 at 80a George Street in Brisbane City. LEAF specialists from Nissan provided a detailed presentation on the vehicle and the technology. Session attendees also had the opportunity to inspect the vehicle parked on-site and to speak with Nissan representatives and QFleet Senior Account Managers. Fiona is confident that there is a role for EVs in the Queensland Government fleet. "The Evaluation Program provides agencies with personal experience of latest EVs such as the LEAF. It also assists them in determining where this new technology can be deployed most effectively," she said. Clients interested in the evaluation of EVs within their fleets are encouraged to consult their QFleet Senior Account Managers. The Program was initiated in August 2010 with QFleet taking delivery of the Queensland Government’s first EV – a Mitsubishi i-MiEV. That vehicle is now on long-term lease to the Department of Environment and Resource Management. Another two i-MiEVs joined the fleet in January 2011 and are being evaluated by various agencies.
