There is no denying of the fact that there has been rapid
changes in every field and the world is now virtually under the
grip of the most powerful economic order, which has been
determining almost everything. In such a situation economic
power is also determining the higher education. In certain
ways, higher education continues to remain international
because economic power blocks no longer want control of
any government authority. Higher education is now a trillion
dollar business. The Economic Survey on higher education
way back in 2003, suggests that the annual fee income alone
was estimated at $ 30 billion. In such a situation even
government controlled universities, in order to deal with
financial loss, openly are soliciting entry of foreign students.
In order to attract foreign students many universities have
tailored their courses to international requirements besides
appointing agents abroad and publicizing their offer widely. It
is true that economically the country gains by opening the
gates of its country to the foreign students. But as a University
have a broad based education for all with some ethical values.
In the process of attracting students from abroad and to send
its students to overseas, KilT from this year has taken up an
ambitious plan. Aptly named as KilT Global, this separate
wing under the independent charge of the Rector would take
care of all the global activities of the university. In the coming
days, KilT would be a very important player in the field of
higher education reaching out to all the countries of the world.
To begin with KilT Global literally, nearly 60 students from
Europe are coming to KilT this weekend for almost six months
Educational excellence
transcending borders •••
Each and every university today looks for the global scenario in the field of higher education.
The rapid changes in every field of knowledge have made the world virtually under the most
powerful economic order that has come through knowledge. With the growth of information
technology, the higher education scenario is fast changing. Never before one could get
information at the press of a button. ICT revolution has changed the way world behaves and
thinks. Higher education is no longer controlled and regulated by the state alone. Since late
1990s, the higher education market is growing by 9% per year. Apart from the state, private
players have entered the education scenario because of which even government Universities
are now soliciting entry of foreign students. To attract foreign students many Universities have
tailored their courses to international requirements.
According to UNESCO Report (2006), the need for international education will increase from 1 .8 million international students
in 2002 to 7.2 million in 2025. This growth creates huge challenges and opportunities. Though the exact figure cannot be
estimated with accu racy, yet it is obvious that there would be rise in the prog rammes and institutions across national boundaries.
In order to meet this rising demands, institutions across the globe have come forward with several plans.

The Association of Indian Universities
organized a Round Ta ble on
'Internationalization of Indian Higher
Education' which discussed the
mec h a n i s m t o p r omote
internationalization of Indian Higher
education. It emphasized the fact that:
"Internationalization of higher
education is a fact of life in the new
knowledge era. It would lead to an
improvement in the quality of education,
produce understanding and yield financial
benefits. It also realized that partnership and
networking are essential to enrich the teaching
learning and to improve quality of research."
Education being a trillion dollar industry, because of the
liberalization and globalization of the industries more and
more business houses are now jumping into the business of
higher education. Despite stiff competition to get a share in
the ever increasing demand, some universities across the
globe have started giving importa nce to the quality
teaching and resea rch, for these universities still believe in
competition in making their presence felt
in global arena.
As a progressive institution, KilT
University has not been untouched
by these developments. The
management of the institution has
identified internationalization of
KilT as an important thrust area for
the next ten years. Starting this
year, a series of measure are on the
anvil, including a setting up of a high impact
'KilT Global' secretariat in the campus to
coordinate the efforts.
Global interaction of KilT University is, however, not new.
Way back in 200 l, KilT was one of the few institutions in the
State of Odisha to attract foreign students into its various
academic programmes. In subsequent years, their
numbers grew steadily. At present student body of KilT
University has representation from over 20 countries,
including most of the South Asian nations, proving that
KilT's reputation as a quality institution of professional
education transcends borders.
KilT University va l ues the diversity that international students bring to campus in terms of culture, background and perspectives.
A decade long exposure to international environment has led to the creation of infrastructure and support systems which are the
most appropriate to welcome foreign students. The University has a proactive International Programme Cell, which provides
guidance to international students right from their arrival in the institute in the matters of their cultural, legal and academic needs
and other issues of relevance. Keeping in view the communication needs of the prospective students from South Korea, China,
Thailand and Japan, the University has established a language lab to improve the communication skills in eight foreign
languages including English. There is a dedicated hostel for international students with superior amenities.
Facilities and support services apart, a curriculum tuned to global standard is a major attraction for foreign students. In order to
maintain such high standard, KilT has roped in faculty and staff members from 13 countries. Besides, international luminaries
such as Nobel La u reates, Ramon Magsaysay Awardees, Ambassadors, renowned legal and management personalities
regularly deliver special lectures at KilT University and interact with the students.
In order to make its presence felt in the global education scenario, KilT University sought membership in various prestigious
world bodies, accreditation boards and associations like University Mobility Asia and the Pacific (UMAP), Association of
Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Association of Universities (IAU). Each of these bodies have large number
of member Universities and members benefit from exchange, degree equivalence, fellowship and research gra nts in furthering
the cause of higher education amongst themselves. KilT's participation in these world bodies has enhanced the credibility of KilT
as a University. The 400 odd Universities body UMAP has been so impressed by KilT that it decided to have its India Office in KilT
University.

National & International Standing
KilT University is accredited by NAAC of UGC in 'A Grade' (Highest CGPA among self-financing universities)
and NBA of AICTE. It is a member of prestigious national and international organizations.
United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI)
KilT University has established academic partnership and collaboration with more than 60 world class universities from across
the world . Though there is specific agreement with individual universities, yet some of the common points are students, faculty &
research scholar exchange programme, internship fo r UG/PG course, research and development participation, short-term
courses for faculty & students, short-term occupational training, exchange of publications & information and seminars and
conferences. As per the arra ngements, KilT students have been reg ularly going to various partner universities. Every year a
group of students from KilT School of Rural Management goes to Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) , Bangkok as a part of their
training.
Similarly, in 20 1 0 two students from School of Ma nagement had been to Czech University of Life Sciences (CULS), one of the
oldest universities of Europe, where they had been admitted to complete two semesters. Students are encouraged to attend the
summer schools in partner universities. Recently, five students have been to the National Formosa University, Ta iwan to attend
the International English Camp there. However, it is not one way traffic from KilT. The university also has been receiving
exchange students from partner universities. In order to cater to the needs of the students coming from overseas, KilT University
often conducts customized courses for them. As a part of KilT Global, nearly 60 students from Ataturk University, Tu rkey will be
arriving in the ca mpus in the second week of August to pursue English certificate course for six months in KilT.

Hon'ble Shri Justice Dipak Mishra, Judge,
Supreme Court of India at KilT School of Law.
Hon'ble Shri Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India
delivered a lecture titled "Social Justice, Judicial Activism and Role
of the Supreme Court of India" in KilT Law School on 281h July 2012.
The decisions of court are not just being tested on the touch stone of social justice, but
also cited of as precursors to 'social rights'. The court has pro-actively and vigorously
taken up the cause of social justice and has gone to the extent of articulating newer
social rights such as the right to food, right to health, right to education, he said.
Though there is no legislation to materialize the social rights, the court can instruct for
the betterment of human justice, if necessary, he said. Quoting the statement of Prof.
Roski, Prof. S. Radhakrishnan, the former President of India and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar,
Justice Misra explained social justice in different sectors including PDS system, right to
health, gender justice and mid-day meal. Giving an example of a case he elaborated,
"Social justice is not narrow, one-sided or pedantic; it's not confined to industrial
jurisdiction alone. Rather, it is founded on the basic idea l of socio economic equality
and the aim is to eliminate the inequities".
Different social factors influence the course of law or the direction of legal change,
Justice Misra explained, adding that this is the outcome of personal and social
interactions which are variable and often unpredictable. At the same time, law may
itself change social norms in various ways, and thus there is a reciprocal relationship
between law and society, he said. Law is also as an indicator of the nature of societa l
complexity and its attendant problems of integration, he added.
Among others, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KilT & KISS and Prof. N. K. Chakrabarty,
Director, KilT School of Law were also present on the occasion.
Merchant of
Hope
stand here, amidst a sea of tribal children, my heart taking in the beauty of an Incredible Odisha created by a man I know
I
now as a spiritual being undergoing a human experience. I feel the darkness lift, and a light enter my soul. I breathe, and I
know India is rising, leaving behind a thousand years of impoverishment. To the great land of Kalinga, I bow my head,
and to the magical vision of Dr Achyuta Sa manta, I put in a salute.
A man's character, I'm told, is shaped in adversity. Growing up, we'd heard about Abraham Lincoln, a gentleman who spent
his early years inside a single log cabin with his family. His poverty denied him a chance to attend school, and the total amount
of formal education Lincoln received lasted less than one year. But Lincoln did not forget the lessons during his adversity, and
that is what eventually shaped his fine, sterling character. He turned every crisis in his life into an opportunity, rose above
failed business ventures, and political defeats, to one day become the President of the United States of America. He triggered
the process of uplifting slaves from their fettered existence, and to this day freedom and liberty remain the most abiding and
cherished dreams of every American. To this day I also hear that he is America's greatest President ever, and I known President
Obama agrees. As I stand on the soil of Bhubaneswar, I take in a similar powerful story scripted far away from Lincoln's 19' "
century logcabin days at Kentucky. Here in Odisha, a state rich in history, but with abundance of poverty, I learn about Dr
Sa manta and how India's most famous citizens have been awed by what they have seen. Institution building with a difference,
that is what he's achieved. Holding my breath, I hear about him skipping meals and starving during his childhood so that every
member in the family could have just about enough in their stomachs to survive. Hearing his moving and inspiring story I
believe that if we count each day by not what we reap, but by what we sow, then life is simpler, and immeasurably better. Dr
Samanta has been sowing the seeds of Good Karma every single day of his life, and the Universe has found a way for him to
become who he is today- a legend who has inspiringly dedicated his life to the upliftment of poor, tribal children in Odisha. At
the same time he has not forgotten the importance of creating a sound revenue model that will allow him to sustain his project
for the tribals. KilT is the revenue model. KISS is the magic-an inspiring tribal school project.
I am awed. Dr Samanta could have been just another billionaire in India, with so much money that it would take him several
lifetimes to spend all his wealth. But he's chosen the road less travelled. He's managed to balance his life beautifully; wealth for
him is just a means to reach the end. The magic of this man allows dreams to spread. He has managed to spread sunshine and
joy in the lives of 16,500 underprivileged children, a figure he wants to raise to 2,00,000 soon. The road he's chosen, the one less
travelled, has made all the difference to the lives of many, and few acts in history are nobler than the act of living for others.
KISS, UNFPA Organise
Training Programme on LSE
LSE Programme in KISS
India is one of the 'youngest' countries and by the end
of the decade the average age of an Indian will be 29
years. Recently released UN Population Fund (UNFPA)
Report 201 1 estimated that India will overtake China
in 2025 in terms of population. A nation fu ll of youth is
a boon to the economy. At the same time, educating
this generation, keeping it healthy and employed is a
steep challenge for the country. Directing this huge
ta lented resource towards productivity needs
concentrated effort.
The adolescence, l 1-19 years, is the most crucial and
formative age for a person. This age group is most
venerable towards bad practices, risky behaviour and
experimentation towards unsafe sexual behaviour,
drugs and crime among others.
An UNFPA-sponsored training programme on Life Skill Education (LSE)
was organized by Ka linga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) at KilT
University for nodal teachers from five tribal district selected for
implementation of the LSE intervention. Total 350 nodal teachers from
138 SSD High Schools in Keonjhar, Rayagada, Nobarangapur,
Ka ndhamal and Ganjam benefited from the training programme,
which was conducted in 12 batches from 1 5th May to 30th June 201 2.
These five districts have recently been selected for implementation of
UNFPA-funded LSE project after several rounds of meeting among
officials of Departments of School & Mass Education and ST & SC
Development, Government of Odisha, KISS and UNFPA decided to
extend the project to other schools of the state. The project is being
implemented in KISS since 2009 and the institute is recognized as a
Resource Centre in Odisha.
Keeping this in mind for the first time in Odisha,
Ka linga Institute of Social sciences (KISS) is honing the
skills of the tribal students through Life Skills Education
(LSE) and Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health
(ARSH) for helping them deal with the challenges in
their life effectively.
Ka linga institute of Social Sciences (KISS) is a
residential tribal institute for 20,000 tribal children
which include 5000-6000 adolescents. The institute
provides a perfect platform for research among
school and college going adolescents. It has also
emerged as a resource and research centre for
imparting life skills to adolescent's boys and girls
effectively.
Earlier, environment building workshops were organized in the district
headquarters for sensitization of key stakeholders which includes the
District Welfare Officers, PA- ITDAs, DSWOs, Head Masters I
Headmistress of SSD High Schools, Sub Collectors, ADMs, We lfare
Extension Officers and UNFPA/UNICEF representatives, etc. Mr.
Anders Thomsen, Deputy Representative, UNFPA, India, Mr. Sushil
Kumar Poppli, Director ST & SC Development Department, Govt of
Odisha, Mr. Hemant Dwivedi, SPC-UNFPA, Mr. P.K. Routray, CEO, KISS
and Dr. Deepa Prasad, SPO-UNFPAgraced the training programme.
Though the main focus of the program is adolescents from 9 to 19 years
of age, everybody can benefit from it. The intervention will bring a social
change in the tribal society, the participants opined. They also praised
the works done by KISS for the empowerment of tribal children. The
intervention will reach out to around 20000 adolescents who are from
backward community and reading in residential high schools of the five
districts, officio Is informed.
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has
partnered with Ka linga Institute of Social Sciences
(KISS), the biggest residential tribal institute in the
South Asia, for the innovative LSE and ARSH projects,
which is about imparting life skills education to the
most crucial yet ignored section of the society.
This is the first project of its type of UNFPA in South
East Asia and the biggest project of UNFPA for Odisha
state. The project, which started in 2009, addresses
tribal adolescents who are highly vulnerable and have
fewer opportunities to access correct and accurate
information about the changes that take place during
the adolescence age of l 0- 19 years.
birds can quench their thirst. Ther movie suggests
making small reservoirs for birds so that they can bathe in
"My father was a forest officer so I spent my childhood in
many forests and sanctuaries of the State. I developed a
close re lation with nature. The present condition of birds in
cities is palpable and worsening every year. That is why I
decided to make a short fi lm on this subject. Many species of
birds have become extinct and several others are on the verge
of extinction. The motto of making this short fi lm was to create
awareness among people about the need to save these little
creatures. I will be more than happy if my movie impels viewers
to do something for the welfare of birds and other wildlife," said Satpathy. He believes that
fi lms are the best medium to spread awareness on wildlife because it gives a voice to voiceless
Modern KIMS Diagnostics Lab (Central Lab) Inaugurated
Diagnostic La boratory (Centra l Lab) of Ka linga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) was inaugurated on 2" d July, 2012 by Founder, Dr. A.
Samanta . The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art high end automated systems to perform pathological, microbiological and
biochemical tests. The fu lly automated systems allow performance of a large number and variety of tests ra pidly with high degree of
accuracy. A stringent quality assurance program with both internal and external agencies like, CMC, Ve llore and AIIMS are being
implemented to ensure accuracy and va lidity of test results. Apart from routine tests, a whole ra nge of new and sophisticated high end tests
have been introduced for the first time in Odisha, solely for diagnostic purpose. Moreover, tests relating to cancer and cancer therapy like
immunohistochemistry and tumor markers are being routinely done. Equipment for immunofloroscence, FISH, Cytogenetics and
electrophoresis (hemoglobin, serum, urine and CSF) have been installed. Most of these facilities were not available in Odisha for
diagnostic purposes and samples were sent to outside centers. As a result, patients had to bear the agony of high cost and delay in crucial
diagnosis. Availability of these tests will greatly help such patients. Highly trained manpower have been put in place to operate the
laboratory and new equipment.
With these kind of set up, the lab can perform a wide ra nge of tests which include routine biochemistry, hematology, cytology, biopsy,
immunology, bacteriology, mycology, serology, hormone assay, cancer detection and prognostication, hemoglobin disorder detection,
genetic disease identification and many more. Further tests like molecular diagnosis, PCR and DNA analysis are planned to be introduced
in the near future. Keeping the view of public service in mind, the rates of all kinds of tests are kept low in comparison to other contemporary
labs outside Odisha to help the people the State.

KIMS Helps Boy Escape from Jaws of Botulism
.. NEWS&
Events
A 1 2-year old boy was admitted to KIMS with complains of weakness for last 24 hours and
slurring of speech, abdomen pain and vomiting for last 12 hours. There was no history of
fever; neither the child had any chronic illness. There was no clear-cut paralysis of muscles
except that the gag reflex was weak. The child, whose mother had died two days back due
to an ailment not clearly established , was very anxious. The clinical examination of child
did not reveal any significant fi nding except weak gag reflexes, mild floppiness of neck and
elevated BP. Arterial blood gas analysis revealed respiratory acidosis with PC02 retention
which indicated respiratory paralysis. The child was shifted to ICU and immediately
incubated and mechanical ventilation initiated. Though doctors diagnosed it as a case of
respiratory failure, exact cause of it was not ascertained. Carefu l history taken from the
child's uncle revealed that both the mother and the child had ta ken curd which was of one
week old. Thus Botulism was suspected .
His stool sample did not grow any
organism, but the toxin assay came
positive. Meanwhile, the paralytic
symptoms gradually progressed from
upper limbs to lower limbs as per natural
course of the disease. CSF analysis on
1 O'h day was normal. NCV and EMG
also indicated Botulism. The child
required mechanical ventilation support
for 22 days. During the phase of
Botulism
Botulism is a very rare disease caused by spores of bacteria Clostridium
Botulinum. There are only 20 to 25 cases per annum in India. Out of many
types, food borne botulism is very common. The outbreak of food borne
botulism most commonly occurs in temperate regions. The disease occurs if
improperly preserved food is consumed. It is the most lethal toxin of human
beings. Just 30mg of toxin can destroy the whole human civilization. But the
toxin can be destroyed by heating of food during preparation. The toxin,
liberated from the spores act on the nervous system, leading to paralysis and if
untreated can lead to death.
ventilator support, the child went through all types of complication from acidosis, shock and septicemia and disuse muscular atrophy.
However, the child came out from all these stages due timely diagnosis and intervention. Physiotherapy was started in later part of
treatment. The child was discharged after 28 days of hospitalization in walking condition. The mother of the child died as she could not
be diagnosed in a rura l area, while the child could be saved due to proper diagnosis and timely intervention including mechanical
ventilation (level 3 cares) at KIMS. Pediatric team of KIMS, comprising of Dr. S. Pattnaik, Dr. Nirmal Mohakud, Dr. C. K. Behera and Dr
Manas Behera, headed by Prof. Aswini Ku. Mohanty treated the patient. Dr. Jagdish Mishra and Dr. Swagata Tri pathy helped.
Total Knee Replacement for Physically Deformed Person
Mr. Ka mala Kinka r Patnaik, 47, was suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis for last 10 years
and unable to stand straight and wa lk properly due to bending and fusion of both the knee
joints for last two years. He could not get much relief by medical treatment elsewhere was
almost confining himself inside home and not able to move outside. He was referred to
outside state for his treatment and was advised tota l knee replacement for correction of
deformity and pain relief. But his fi nancial condition could not permit him to be operated in
reputed hospitals outside of Odisha. He could, however, come to know about Orthopedic
Department of KIMS and came for consultation with Dr. Basanta K. Behera, Sr. Joint
Replacement Surgeon. After examining Dr. Behera assured him that the surgery can be
done in KIMS at a much less cost compared to hospitals outside Odisha.
The patient
after treatment.
The patient and his relatives were convinced. Mr. Patnaik was operated successfully with bilatera
l total knee replacement for correction of 2 years long deformity. This rare surgery
was performed by Dr. Basanta K. Behera, Dr. Jagdish Mishra and their team.
Now patient can stand straight and walk independently without any support. He is an
advocate by profession from Bhadrak District and could not pursue his profession for last
two years due to the knee problem. But now he has resumed his work and is regularly going
to the Court.
