It is with great sorrow that the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Sleep Medicine informs its<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the untimely passing <strong>of</strong> long-time and esteemed member <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>Hening</strong>,<br />

MD, PhD.<br />

A noted expert in restless legs syndrome, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> conducted extensive research on<br />

the topics <strong>of</strong> sleep disorders, movement disorders, motor control and clinical<br />

neurophysiology. Most recently he served as co-investigator and coordinator <strong>of</strong> data<br />

for a randomized double-blind parallel placebo-controlled study <strong>of</strong> dopaminergic<br />

therapy in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Restless Legs<br />

Syndrome (RLS) and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) in sleep, which was<br />

supported by a planning grant from the National <strong>In</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong> Neurological Disorders<br />

and Stroke. Over the course <strong>of</strong> his career <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> served as the primary or coinvestigator<br />

<strong>of</strong> several important studies that are foundational to current understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> RLS and PLMD and have fostered continued investigation into movement disorders<br />

in sleep.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> also held several clinical and educational appointments over the course <strong>of</strong><br />

his illustrious career. For many years <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> served as Clinical Assistant<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Neurology at the University <strong>of</strong> Medicine and Dentistry <strong>of</strong> New Jersey,<br />

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He also served<br />

in different capacities for the Veterans Administration (VA) in New Jersey: notably he<br />

was one <strong>of</strong> three national advisors in the area <strong>of</strong> neurology and neurobiology research,<br />

providing advice on research areas to the Medical Research Service <strong>of</strong> the VA and<br />

reviewing appeals <strong>of</strong> unfunded programs within the areas <strong>of</strong> neurology and<br />

neurobiology. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> was also the recipient <strong>of</strong> two Career Development Awards<br />

from the VA, one for Planning and Production <strong>of</strong> Targeted Force Impulses in<br />

Movement Disorders and the other for Human Motor Accuracy: Normal Performance<br />

vs. Parkinsonian Deficits.

<strong>In</strong> addition to his research, educational and clinical affiliations, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> was an<br />

active member <strong>of</strong> several pr<strong>of</strong>essional associations, including the American Academy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sleep Medicine and the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Neurology; he also served on the<br />

Medical Advisory Board for the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation.<br />

A graduate <strong>of</strong> Yale University, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong> completed premedical studies at Columbia<br />

University and received his master’s, medical and postdoctoral degrees from New<br />

York University School <strong>of</strong> Medicine.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Hening</strong>’s legacy will sustain through his many contributions to the sleep medicine<br />

field.<br />
