The Atlantic North: from Le
Robert to Ajoupa Bouillon
A wild, very jagged coast: the road follows the
coastline from above and goes past several
picturesque towns where fishing and agriculture are
the main activities.
Le Robert and its magnificent bay with small islands
and coral reefs galore. A choice boating haven.
In Trinité, Tartane, a small fishing village on the
Caravelle peninsula, steeped in the Dubuc family
history. The ruins of the castle are tucked away in a
nature reserve where beautiful hikes await you.
From Sainte-Marie, take a side-trip to Morne des
Esses to admire the basketwork, visit the Saint-
James Rum museum and the Habitation Fonds
Saint-Jacques, or take a ride on the Petit Train des
Plantations (Plantations sight-seeing train) to learn
about the historical background of sugar cane,
which is still Martinique’s greatest asset.
Don’t miss the Musée de la Banane (Banana
museum).
From November through April, you can see a natural
tidal phenomenon, the “Tombolo”, a sandbank that
links a small neighboring island to the shore.
In Basse-Pointe, the Habitation Pécoul, a traditional
colonial estate.
Nestled deep in a lush valley is the peaceful village
of Grand Rivière, where the road ends and the hiking
trail to le Prêcheur begins.
In Grand Rivière, children can be observed practicing
a spectacular sport: tree-trunk surfing in choppy
waters. The trees are known as “flots”.
Ajoupa Bouillon, a charming village set in a floral
landscape.
For the athletically inclined: don’t miss the hike up
the Gorges de la Falaise.
