The COAST Project:<br />

br<strong>in</strong>gs jobs to people and preserves nature by<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g green bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> sectors of<br />

agriculture, fisheries and tourism


The COAST Project: HOW?<br />

<strong>Green</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Support Programme<br />

– Partnerships: counties, people, banks<br />

– Mentor<strong>in</strong>g and education<br />

– Grants and loans


COAST Achievements: economic<br />

• $2.5 million <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> grants, technical assistance and<br />

partial guarantee scheme mobilised $20 million of private<br />

sector <strong>in</strong>vestments - 72 projects and 8 loans<br />

• At least 100 direct beneficiaries – jobs <strong>in</strong> organic farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and cattle breed<strong>in</strong>g, shellfish farms, autochthonous sorts<br />

and breeds, susta<strong>in</strong>able tourism bus<strong>in</strong>ess


COAST Achievements: environmental<br />

• Organically cultivated areas <strong>in</strong> Dalmatia <strong>in</strong>creased 3 times<br />

<strong>in</strong> the last 4 years<br />

• The biggest olive grove and biggest v<strong>in</strong>eyard (100 ha) <strong>in</strong><br />

Dalmatia were converted to organic – without project<br />

support this would not happen<br />

• Traditional sorts and breeds re-<strong>in</strong>troduced aim<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

economic revitalisation as a base for premium price<br />

products


The COAST<br />

• reviv<strong>in</strong>g life <strong>in</strong> rural areas<br />

<strong>in</strong> Dalmatia<br />

• br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g back traditional and<br />

new economic activities<br />

• creat<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able values<br />

with local partners, for local<br />

communities


The COAST project achievements are<br />

result of a 5-year small scale pilot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

green bus<strong>in</strong>ess activities.<br />

$2.5 million was <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong>to grants,<br />

technical assistance and guarantees for<br />

loans.<br />

Scal<strong>in</strong>g this up from Dalmatia to the<br />

whole <strong>Croatia</strong>, Adriatic and wider<br />

Mediterranean region would br<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

green jobs and susta<strong>in</strong>able values<br />

created for people.

GACKA project<br />

Achievements – economic:<br />

• Brand<strong>in</strong>g and produc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fo-edu<br />

products targeted at round 15.000<br />

tourists/y.<br />

• Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> smaller <strong>in</strong>frastructure to<br />

upgrade local tourist offer – bik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

trails and rent-a-bike spots; flyfish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guide and rent-a-rod po<strong>in</strong>ts;<br />

fitness park built.<br />

• Roughly 15 new jobs created <strong>in</strong> and<br />

around Otočac.


GACKA project<br />

achievements: environmental<br />

• Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> project<br />

documentation for waste<br />

water <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />

• Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> visitor-centre<br />

at the “Centre for<br />

Indigenous Species of<br />

Carstic Fish and Crayfish” –<br />

close to 2000 visitors a year.<br />

• Publish<strong>in</strong>g the “Guide to<br />

Good Water Management”


GACKA project achievements: social<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g with creat<strong>in</strong>g local, diverse<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able tourism products and create<br />

values with local people for the benefit<br />

of local communities <strong>in</strong> rural areas/Lika.


The Energy Efficiency Project (EE)<br />

Systematic energy management <strong>in</strong><br />

public sector build<strong>in</strong>gs - public<br />

sector as a leader of <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

energy efficiency <strong>in</strong> it’s own<br />

house.


The EE Project: environmental benefits<br />

• Created registry of 8500 public build<strong>in</strong>gs with regular<br />

energy consumption monitor<strong>in</strong>g – build<strong>in</strong>gs are<br />

entered <strong>in</strong>to the Energy Management Information<br />

System, which makes CO2 emissions visible.<br />

• Reduced CO2 emissions: 63.000 t/y or round 0.2%<br />

of total <strong>Croatia</strong>n annual emissions.<br />

• More efficient management of resources: saved<br />

energy of 194.000 MWh


The EE Project: economic benefits<br />

• 60 million Kuna was <strong>in</strong>vested over 5<br />

years and round 100 jobs created for<br />

the <strong>in</strong>troduction of systematic energy<br />

management <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs of cities,<br />

counties and m<strong>in</strong>istries<br />

• Reduced costs for water and energy:<br />

until now 91 million Kuna is saved<br />

• More then 380 jobs are gradually be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

converted <strong>in</strong>to green – employees of<br />

EE teams <strong>in</strong> 64 cities, 14 counties, 10<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istries; and at 6 EE <strong>in</strong>fo-centres <strong>in</strong><br />

different <strong>Croatia</strong>n regions


EE: more economic potential <strong>in</strong>...<br />

• More then 1000 energy audits of<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs conducted by 17<br />

companies with more then 150<br />

<strong>Croatia</strong>n experts – identified<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment potential of more then<br />

1.6 billion Kuna<br />

• If this is reflected <strong>in</strong> residential<br />

sector – <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> EE<br />

measures at only 20% of exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

residencies would account for<br />

7000 new jobs <strong>in</strong> 10 years and<br />

500.000 t/CO2
