6 endeavor in action REINVEST It is Endeavor’s mission ultimately to become “of, by, and for” entrepreneurs. When Endeavor was young, give-back from the entrepreneurs included speaking on Endeavor’s behalf, attending selection panels, and mentoring other Endeavor Entrepreneurs. Since then, local Endeavor Entrepreneurs have created financially sustainable models to support the next generation of High-Impact Entrepreneurs and propagate the social importance of Endeavor’s work. ENDEAVOR BRAZIL: 2% EQUITY REINVESTMENT + $300 MONTHLY FEES Within 12 months of being selected, Endeavor Entrepreneurs agree to donate 2% equity to Endeavor Brazil and $300 in monthly service fees. The 2% equity will be paid out in the event of liquidity. 100% of Endeavor Brazil Entrepreneurs are participating in this give-back program. Combined with a fundraising gala, Endeavor Brazil will be fully sustainable by 2010 —10 years after its launch. The collective value of Endeavor companies in Brazil at the end of 2007 was approximately $1.37BB, a 35% growth rate from 2006. Endeavor Brazil is building a formal endowment to collect the future liquidity of donated equity currently valued around $20MM. Endeavor Brazil’s Luiz Chicani was the first High-Impact Entrepreneur to donate liquidated equity to Endeavor. The reinvestment is spreading to other affiliates. In 2008, Nutra Bien was sold to a major Chilean food producer and distributor. As part of that sale, founders Patricio and Isabella made the first equity donation to Endeavor Chile by Endeavor Entrepreneurs. “Before Endeavor I felt like I was traveling on a gravel road. Since we met Endeavor, I suddenly see a ten-lane highway in front of me.” Patricio Jaras, Nutra Bien CASE STUDY: WENCES CASARES & THE VIRTUOUS CYCLE OF ENDEAVOR In 1998, Wences, the 23-year-old son of a sheep farmer in rural Argentina, launched Patagon.com, Latin America’s first online brokerage firm. Wences had been turned down by more than 30 local investors when Endeavor selected him. Endeavor helped Wences raise $4 million in equity financing. Two years later, he sold the business to Spain’s Banco Santander for $750 million. Since then, Wences has donated over a quarter of a million dollars (plus options in a new company) to Endeavor and joined Endeavor Global’s Board of Directors. This unstoppable entrepreneur has launched several new companies: Lemon Bank, a Brazilian-based bank for the poor; Wanako Games; Classified Media Group; MECK, an investment fund; and BlingNation, an open alternative payment network. Now, Wences has become a sought-after angel investor. He has financed Endeavor Entrepreneurs, including Needish.com, a Chilean start-up that Endeavor selected in April 2008. Perhaps most significantly, Wences has become an iconic role model: “IF WENCES CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT TOO!” HAS BECOME AN OFTEN-HEARD RALLYING CRY IN THE SOUTHERN CONE.” 56 57
