Brown Bears
The Brown Bears are in the midst of a remarkable turnaround season
as they continued their success in the Ivy League with a 1-0
shutout victory over Penn on Saturday ... Head Coach Mike
Noonan's team is 5-0 in the Ivy League and 9-3-1 overall this season
with two league matches left to be played ... Brown finished
up its injury plagued 2002 season with a 1-4-2 seventh place league
mark ... If the Bears can pull out a victory over Yale in New Haven
this Saturday, they will be the Ivy League champions ... The Bears
have allowed just one goal total in its five Ivy contests, recording
four shutouts ... Freshman Brian Joyce (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded
the winning goal against the Quakers, the first of his career ...
Sophomore Brian Perry (Manlius, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the
play ... Junior Chris Gomez (Bellflower, Calif.) posted eight saves
in the win as he picked up the 12th shutout of his career ... Brown
has not lost a game since Sept. 30, having gone 5-0-1 since that
time ... Senior Adom Crew (Columbia, Md.) leads the team with
eight goals and two assists for 18 points ... Junior Marcos
Romaneiro (North Brunswick, N.J.) follows with five goals and
four assists for 14 points.
Columbia Lions
Yale's two goals against the Lions marked just the third time this
season Columbia has yielded more than a goal in a game ..
Sophomore Blake Lindberg (New Orleans, La.) went the first 28
games of his collegiate career without a goal or an assist ... In the
Lions' win over Lafayette, he got one of each ... The 2002 secondteam
All-Ivy honoree scored the game-winner against the
Leopards, and later added an assist ... Columbia's six-game
unbeaten streak, which ended Saturday against Yale, was the
team's longest in a single-season since 1994 ... The team needs one
win in its last three games to reach double-digits in victories for
the fourth time in the last five years ... The win over Lafayette
assured Columbia of its 20th winning season in 25 years under
Dieter Ficken ... Twenty-two of those seasons have been .500 or
better.
Cornell Big Red
The Big Red dropped a pair of contests on the week, falling 1-0 in a
tough loss at home against Oneonta before dropping a 2-1 double
overtime decision at Princeton on Friday ... On Wednesday against
the Red Dragons, Cornell was on the attack for the vast majority of
the contest, but could not find the back of the net, and lost to
Oneonta for the first time since 1988 ... After Princeton broke a
scoreless tie with a goal in the 55th minute, the Big Red knotted the
contest just over 17 minutes later as freshman Nick Leonard
(Eugene, Ore.) sent home a ball after junior Steve Reuter
(Algonquin, Ill.) put an initial shot on goal to get the Tiger goalkeeper
out of position ... Princeton's goal in the opening minute of
double overtime dashed the Big Red's hopes of earning a share of
the Ivy title ... Cornell will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9,
when it travels to face Dartmouth for a contest beginning at 1:30.
Dartmouth Big Green
The Big Green has been decimated by injuries this season and
forced to call up players from the J.V. squad to field a full team ...
After losing first team All-Ivy forward Scott Darci (Marblehead,
Mass) three games into the season, Dartmouth has had to deal
with an injury to captain Tom Billings (Stratford-Upon-Avon,
England) ... Leading scorer Rob Daly (New Port Richey, Fla.) also
missed a match. Daly continues to lead the team in scoring with
eight goals and 16 points.
Harvard Crimson
The Crimson exploded for four goals in their win over Dartmouth
... The four goals are the most they have scored this year ...
Harvard loves playing in the friendly confines of Ohiri Field,
where they sport a 6-1-1 record ... In the last two contests, Harvard
has outscored their opponents, 6-1 ... In the win over the Big
Green, freshman Charles Altchek (Rye, N.Y.), senior Kevin Ara
(Upland, Calif.), freshman Matt Hoff (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore
Nicholas Tornaritis (Groton, Mass.) all had a goal and an
assist ... Zach Chandis (Mendham, N.J.) registered his first career
point when he assisted on Altchek's goal ... Over their last six
games Harvard is 4-1-1, making a strong push to get an at-large
bid for the NCAA Tournament ... The Crimson have three games
remaining, Tuesday at Providence, then Saturday at Columbia
before hosting Penn at home on November 15th.
Penn Quakers
The Quakers’ rematch of last season’s NCAA First Round game
against Seton Hall was postponed due to inclement weather …
The game is to be rescheduled for Nov. 10 or 11 … A depleted
Penn team fell, 1-0, to No. 11 Brown University on Saturday
evening … Freshman Daniel Cepero (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded 10
saves between the pipes for the Quakers … Cepero currently has a
save percentage of 0.917 … Junior Stephen Kroculick (Delran,
N.J.) led the Quakers’ offense with 4 shots … Up next for the Red
and Blue are two home matches … On Wednesday, the Quakers
face cross-town rivals Saint Joseph’s and on Saturday they take on
Princeton.
Princeton Tigers
Princeton won a significant Ivy League game and took on two
nationally ranked teams this week, moving to 5-7-3 overall and 2-
2-1 in the conference ... Last Tuesday, senior co-captain
Gianfranco Tripicchio (Clark, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal
to help the Tigers avoid a shutout to Rutgers, the No. 3 team in the
Middle Atlantic ... Princeton then hosted Cornell on Friday night,
when the two Ivy teams battled into two overtimes with the score
locked at 1-1 ... Darren Spicer (Diamond Bar, Calif.) scored the
first goal of the game at 54:16 on a breakaway pass from Marty
Shaw (Laurel, Md.), and Jeff Hare (Richmond, Va.) scored the
overtime gamewinner with a header set up by Kyle McHugh
(Baldwin, Md.) ... At No. 12 Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, the
Tigers outshot the Knights 14-11, but Hare's second header of the
week was the only goal Princeton could manage in the 4-1 loss ...
Hare and Spicer are now tied as the team's leading scorers with
four goals apiece ... The Tigers play next on Saturday at Penn.
Yale Bulldogs
Yale stayed very much in the thick of the Ivy League race with
Saturday's 2-1 victory over Columbia in New York ... Andrew
Dealy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) deflected a Marc Vimolratana (Dallas,
Texas) shot just inside the right post 28 seconds into overtime to
lift the Bulldogs to victory ... It was Vimoratana's first point of the
season. "This was as tough and competitive an Ivy League game as
I've been a part of," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "We
were able to wear them down a little bit in the overtime. It was fitting
that Dealy got the winning goal. He was the difference in the
game." The Bulldogs now have a showdown with first-place
Brown on Saturday in New Haven ... Yale, which has already doubled
last year's Ivy win total, is 8-3 in its last 11 games ... Juniors
Lindsey Williams (Columbus, Ohio) and Ryan Raybould
(Leawood, Kan.) scored in Yale's 3-2 loss to Central Connecticut.
