Funds raised benefited charities selected by President S R Nathan. The aim of the Flag Day was to build camaraderie among the new students as well as instil a charitable spirit. Mr Ngiam Shih Chun, Director from MCYS at the National Day Observance Ceremony which was held at the SP Sports Complex on 8 August 2007. This has been a tradition for all SP first year students since 2002. Over the past 6 years, SP freshmen have succeeded in raising $786,000. This year alone the net amount raised was $137,263.80. The cheque for the amount raised this year was presented by Mr Arthur Fong, MP for the West Coast GRC to 22
National Day Observance Ceremony 2007 This year’s National Day Observance Ceremony was held at the SP Sports Complex on Wednesday, 8 August 2007. This event also known as the NDOC has now become a traditional event on the SP calendar. The NDOC this year mirrored some of the features in the actual National Day Parade but obviously not on the same scale. There was abseiling from the roof of the Sports Complex; there was a flypast by two remote-controlled helicopters with the State flag and the SP flag. There was a Guard-of-Honour, singing, dancing, remote-controlled cars, and percussion band with multiethnic drums. There were some really cute children from the child care centre and there was lots of fun and cheering from the grandstand. SPAN This year’s event was also attended by a number of SP alumni including the Executive Committee members of the Singapore Polytechnic Graduates Guild (SPGG) as well as the SP Industrial Management Association (SPIMA). To make it extra meaningful for SP alumni, one of the emcees for the event was Ms Ho Wei Ning (DMC 2005). Ning as she is affectionately known to colleagues at SAA has been working in SP for more than a year now. She used to be a member of SP Comperes when she was a student. The last event that Ning hosted as a student compere was NDOC 2005. There are other things that she never got to do when she was a student but everything is happening for her now, but we’ll let her tell you more. Here’s her first-person account of her first year in Singapore Polytechnic – as a staff instead of a student. National Day 2007 – reflecting on my first year in SP Now that I have had the opportunity of compereing this year’s NDOC, it has naturally triggered the urge to look back at the past 2 years. While I completed my studies in SP in 2005, I had the privilege to re-join SP as a Student Development Officer just over a year ago. Many of you may not know that SP has about 1,500 staff and about 360 of these staff are actually SP alumni like me. Ning with kids @ NDOC’07 Working in SP is like discovering the hidden part of the iceberg. Every complaint that students like me used to make, is now overshadowed by my realisation of the immense effort that SP staff put in just to provide us with good student services as well as our education. It has made me more appreciative of the lecturers and administrative staff that I used to work with or report to. Did I mention that those same people are now my colleagues? Many things that I never had a chance to do while studying here have also been fulfilled now e.g. being a VJ for a day, facilitating Leadership Training Camps and leading Overseas Community Service Projects. The most unforgettable experience was to juggle work in SP and perform in our SuPerStar Musical. That musical was a first for SP and it showed off the numerous talents of SP staff, students and alumni. The payoff was a generous amount raised for the President’s Challenge, a standing ovation for everyone involved in the musical, and a chance to compere in front of His Excellency Mr SR Nathan, when he invited us to his the Istana for tea, as foretold in the lyrics of one the songs in the musical. Being younger and also an alumnus, the students see me as a big sister to consult or bully. I have also been given the opportunity to be the officer-in-charge of my former club, SP Student Comperes. This was my chance to instil our idealism and mould the club into the “better” club that we (the alumni) had envisioned. When things go wrong as they inevitably do (Murphy’s Law), I turn to my seniors i.e. my colleagues who were the past officers of SP Student Comperes for advice. It is always daunting to realise that your officer is now your colleague and friend. As a student, I also wondered what it is that keeps some staff working in SP for so long. Someone once told me that people who work for SP longer than 7 years tend to stay – it’s called the “Seven-year itch”. I haven’t gotten there yet but like all of them, I take pleasure in seeing my students grow into mature and confident young leaders – to fulfil their dreams. Unlike some, I realise that my SP Life did not stop after my graduation. In fact my SP experience is now made up of all my student’s SP experiences and so long as I work in SP, I believe it will continue to grow. - Ho Wei Ning, SAA 23
