Cultivating Excellence . . . Private support makes the difference between mediocrity and excellence. LSU SVM must continue to excel. ~ Dr. William Jenkins Dr. William (Bill) Jenkins, former LSU SVM Dean and LSU President Emeritus, and his wife, Peggy, are devoted volunteers who give generously of their time to support the School in general and the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana in particular. Explaining his passion for animals, Bill said, “From early childhood, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I grew up on a farm, so I’ve been around animals all my life. I’m originally from South Africa, and, of course, they have such an amazing variety of wild animals there—I think my great love for wildlife was just…instinctive,” he said. “It’s always been there.” Bill had a long and extraordinary career with LSU beginning with his taking the reins of LSU SVM in 1988. He was named LSU’s Executive Vice-Chancellor and Provost in 1993, Chancellor of LSU in 1996, and President of the LSU System in 1999. Retired at last, Bill and Peggy now promote and support LSU SVM through working with volunteer associations, mentoring volunteers, and introducing the School to their many friends. Through Volunteering “The Veterinary School is critically important to the citizens of Louisiana,” Bill said, “but it goes beyond that. LSU SVM is one of only 28 veterinary schools in the United States—not only does it serve the city of Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana, it serves the nation.” His many years spent in administration have made Bill acutely aware of the challenges facing the School of Veterinary Medicine and, indeed, every facet of a public university such as LSU. “It makes a strong statement for the state that we have such a fine and well-recognized school, but to maintain our position will require resources that, without private support, we won’t have. Private support,” he said emphatically, “makes the difference between mediocrity and excellence.
