SAVE Editor’s Note There is something about this time of year that heightens the senses. Maybe it’s the intensity of the sun, the smell of grilled food, the laughter of company on the deck and the visual array of flora in its abundant glory. There are so many possible outcomes for fantastic weekends and extended weekday evenings, that sadly, in our climate we just have to do our best to squeeze it all in during this season. This issue of ARTnews is giving you a glimpse of some potential seasonal activities. If you like nature walks with a twist, art tours, artistic destinations for family experiences, and not-to-be-missed outdoor performances, then keep this magazine as your go-to summer read. Share the common thread of fibre art with over 26 artists involved with the second International Triennial of Textile Arts in the Outaouais on pages 6 to 7. Want to add more international flavour to your itinerary? Then see page 9 for performances in the Music & Beyond Festival and turn to page 11 for the National Gallery of Canada’s Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art exhibit. Discover public art in your community Vision Weave, by textile artists Thoma Ewen and Gabby Ewen, is a visual expression of inter-cultural and inter-generational creative collaboration. Hidden within the woven wool banners suspended from the foyer ceiling of the Albion Heatherington Community Centre are over 100 ‘vision messages’ for the present and future written by members of that community. The artist team set up their portable loom outdoors at the Better Beginnings Better Futures June celebration, and in the centre throughout July 2010 to teach, animate, communicate and direct the weaving of the Vision Weave project with community members of all ages. On strips of ribbon and fabric entwined throughout the textiles contributors declared their shared hopes, dreams and visions for a vibrant, peaceful and creative community.
