Stilyagi (Hipsters), 2008. The Russian musical dramedy cult film depicts
Soviet youth subculture (the stilyagi) of the late 1950s, and their methods of
self-expression during the Soviet regime.

Intouchables (2011): Relationships, uplifting, mirth beyond measure and
great for getting pupils talking about character traits.
Ma Vie en Rose (1997) About a boy who is sure God meant him to be a
girl and how the family have to cope with this.
Persépolis (2007) A young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop
of the Iranian Revolution.
Les Choristes (2004): A new surveillant arrives in a home for difficult
boys and starts a choir much against the director's better judgement. This is
a wonderfully uplifting story about the redemptive power of music. A winner
with the musical and especially year 9 girls!
Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010) : Luc Besson
does Indiana Jones. Derived form a comic-book series by Jacques Tardi.
“Enter intrepid tomb raider Adèle Blanc-Sec resplendent beneath an array of
flamboyant bonnets that she only discards in order to disguise herself as a
nurse or a moustachioed jailer, or to lounge at length in a bathtub.” The
Guardian.
Welcome (2009): A swimming coach tries to help an illegal Kurdish immigrant
to swim across the Channel; great for “what would you do?” discussions
with 6th formers.
Le Dîner de Cons (1998): High art it certainly is not, but this tale about
who among a group of friends can invite the stupidest person to dinner is
classic slapstick – boys love it.
Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (2008) : More slapstick and farce for the boys
as a Southerner is posted to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
